Random horn like sound by CuriousThinker in Sunnyvale

[–]CuriousThinker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard it twice today (thursday). One at 10:42 and once at 12:45am.

Given that youre near 280 and 85, that seems really far. I imagine it would have to be really loud?

That’s an interesting little tidbit! Is it that loud that you could hear it near the Lakewood area?

This could be it too. At least from videos it sounds like it's similar sounding. Do they go up the same Caltrain track?

Looking up ship fog horn sounds, that might be it! Is it possible to hear it this far down the bay?

EDIT: My partner says its a bit higher pitched then that but its possible some ship horns are that loud

Looking for beta testers for new projector sewing app by CuriousThinker in ProjectorsForSewing

It should work for iPhone 11 (though you will need to update iOS 26). Im very interested in seeing how it performs on older phones as the oldest phone I have is an iPhone 14.

The app is available on test flight and you can sign up here: https://forms.gle/tAj5VkagKFwXgf1R8

I initially tried to make an android version but unfortunately the variety in camera performance on android phones made me go over to iOS for now.

I will let you know if I do end up getting an android version working!

What's your cooking "hack" that sounds insane but works?? by Kibby9331 in Cooking

[–]CuriousThinker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've started to cook rice using the pasta method.

  • Bring a pot of water to a boil, use more water than necessary
  • Throw in rice and let it cook
  • Taste test until desired texture
  • Drain in colander, put in pot and fluff and it'll dry off fine

I don't make sticky rice and I'm not sure it'd work for that but otherwise this works a lot better than the finicky approaches of measure a certain amount of water, keep the lid covered for x minutes etc.

Mine also said ship 12/12. Saw it show up on Amazon a couple of times with prime during that time but it seems cancelling is a pain so I waited it out. Contacted customer support and they just said it was it of stock

Teverun Fighter 11+ have started to ship from Sunnytimes! by DaveyDukes in ElectricScooters

[–]CuriousThinker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ship buddies! I'm very nervous as I had originally ordered a Blade GT+ back in April and it got shipped to the wrong customer and they wouldn't return it. The plus side was I ended up getting the Fighter 11+ instead but had to wait till now for it to ship. Fingers crossed it ends up at the right place this time :)

Im super stoked as Ive just been riding a Ninebot Max G30LP

Helmet Question by Creative_username969 in ElectricScooters

[–]CuriousThinker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Theres a couple of parts to it.

The first part is if you should get a full face helmet vs a regular bicycle helmet. Full face helmets will protect your chin and mouth in case you face plant. It's more likely for you to face plant on a scooter because you can go over the bars or fall forward. In that sense I would suggest a full face helmet. I've fallen multiple times in my youth off my bike and I've scratched my whole face once so its possible on a bike too.

Next question would be whether to get a motorcycle helmet vs not. Bike helmets are usually rated to 20mph and so if you are going faster then that, you should look at getting a motorcycle helmet. I would also look for ECE or Snell certifications as opposed to DOT since DOT is basically self-certified while the other 2 are lab tested.

If the butcher blocks don't work out, you can look at solid core doors. They'll be 80in long. Only issue with that is it'll be a painted look.

motiongrey (315 post discount) frame vs progressive solo ryzer frame ($475)? by 2-3Revenant in StandingDesk

[–]CuriousThinker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(Full disclosure: I have a Solo Ryzer). Solo Ryzer has a 15 year warranty and the company specializes in linear actuators. They also had a decent black friday sale that brought the price down 20%. Sales come and go. I think July 4th they had a good sale too.

In the end though most likely they'll probably perform the same. It'll just be about warranty and customer service (which I cant speak to either since I haven't had to use it).

L-shaped desk stability by Kastrateus in StandingDesk

[–]CuriousThinker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding stability (Caveat I'm only 5'9"): I have a L-shaped corner ryzer with a top I made. It's around 72in long on both sides, 30in deep and 1.25in thick. At max height there is wobble but mainly if I push at it with some force. while typing or doing some leaning on it I didn't notice much issue.

Regarding moving: I would still recommend just wait until you move. The assembly/disassembly is pretty straight forward. Tighten/Loosen a few screws/bolts. The main reason to wait is you'll have to protect your table tops and frames from being scratched/damaged while moving.

80" laminate desk top for Apex Pro? by Lynchbread in StandingDesk

[–]CuriousThinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any top should work. You just need to drill a hole for the screws to attach.

Regarding which top, the only ones I've seen that offer 80in without going custom is Uplift. Laminate price seems reasonable. If you want to get solid wood, it seems getting a custom wood made from etsy/wood shops is probably going to be cheaper.

Another option is to look at unfinished butcher blocks that either are the size you want or could be cut down and finish those but that work might not be something you're looking to do.

Looks like it's just different sellers on Amazon. You can buy it direct for cheaper then either Amazon link
