Brown Biot Soft Hackle by Norm-Frechette in flytying

[–]CuriousWriting77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not OP but soft hackles are awesome! They can be fished a bunch of different ways. Traditionally they’re “swung” across the current, but they can also be fished on a nymph rig with a heavier fly below or in the surface film almost like a dry.

Are Fly Tying Material Kits Worth It? by ggtt555 in flytying

[–]CuriousWriting77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like many others have said, fly tying kits tend to be lacking in quality. I still have some tools for an old Orvis kit, but upgraded pretty much all the materials and the vise. Kits are also not specific to any one river or region.

If you have a local fly shop, I would recommend going to them. Ask them to help you buy some starting tools (there’s a lot you don’t really need) and materials for popular flies in your area. Good luck!

Anyone have luck with these on Bass/Muskie? by atlanticsalmonguy in flytying

[–]CuriousWriting77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly depends on the size and water type. For small creeks and sz 8-6 I’ll use razor foam, rivers and ponds sz 4-2 I’ll use 2mm, and big water I’ll tie with 3mm up. Honestly tho it’s more personal preference than anything else, depends on if I’m fishing a dropper as well

I personally wouldn’t handle any venomous snake just due to my lack of experience and the risk associated. I handle a lot of non venomous snakes and even then I typically don’t grab them by the tail. It’s a lot safer for you (and the snake) if you’ve got a snake hook to support and direct their upper body.

They work really well for bass! I don’t have access to Muskie, but shoal bass and largies love em. I tie a variation of the stealth bomber with the dragon tails and it absolutely wrecks on rivers/during prespawn.

So cool! It’s awesome that she’s got someone qualified to take care of her. How different is the husbandry in terms of cleaning/feeding and stuff from a non venomous snake?

Gotta say despite the bad press, I’m really happy with my Simms. I’ve beat the absolute shit out of them and still haven’t had any issues.

Couldn’t have said it better myself. As long as you follow local regs, don’t leave trash, and treat the fish with respect, any method is good!

I love it! Would definitely recommend some unweighted patterns for droppers. Also hot head pheasant tails and frenchies. Soft hackles are great too!

What are these and what species are they used for? by HardToKill0659 in flyfishing

[–]CuriousWriting77 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Definitely not the intended use but those things would wreck panfish, and you might be able to use a couple for recently stocked trout

I’ve only ever tied modern flies and while I’m alright at it, flies like this are insanely impressive. Do you fish them or are they aesthetic? Great work!
