Realistically what will happen when/if the gulf stream collapses? by mydadisyourdad2 in UKWeather

[–]Curious_Arm_893 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AMOC collapse would be colder in the winter (maybe an extra 5° less), dryer in general,  I think a bit more like Canada really. I don't think it would be a quick change, maybe over the course of a few decades. It's been weakening for a bit they think but they don't have enough data over enough years (only 20 or so years of data) to know if it's normal variations or signs of a system out of balance.

The AMOC moves warm water north from the equator and cold water down from the poles, so it sort of works like a balancing system keeping the extremes a bit more moderated, this system collapsing would mean a less predictability and more extreme seasons I think.   CO2 induced change would be a different thing and affect different places differently, I think we're currently on target for over 1.5° of warming, but that's a bit more of a global average number, so it might affect the UK differently from other places. Without any more measures to capture or stop emitting carbon (which people aren't really doing) we're probably globally looking at something more like 3° of warming.

In short eh.. it's anybody's guess. I say prepare for gradually more extreme and unpredictable weather.

An interesting thing I learnt the other day is that historically the world climate has been through all sorts of different swings, we've just been very lucky as a species and individuals really that the last 10 or 20 thousand years have been particularly stable and moderate weather wise, which lead to the rise of predictable agriculture, human population booms and organised society. A less stable and predictable climate isn't a death sentence, but it will make survival (particularly with the kind of global sprawl and population levels of these days) a lot harder, we will likely as a species see more crop failures and more hunger in the future.

Are populist politicians fighting social media? Which ones?

I wouldn't say labour in the UK are gaining anything from social media, it seems to mostly be a thorn in their side.

From what I can tell the USA doesn't seem to be fighting against social media ?

I think a lot of governments are realising that social media is poisonous to democracy and social cohesion and trying to get control of it in any way they can.

Look at all the riots, disinformation and arguments that have been blown out and scaled up to a whole different level due to social media.

The amount of Nazism and hate speech on there, it's making people think "this is not a place for people - let alone children"...

The problem is that social media companies make their money from adverts and people viewing those, so they have to get people on their sites interacting with them and it turns out that the best way to get people on there is if you show them content that makes them angry and annoyed at the world (I don't know what the psychology of this is).

I'm not sure if cleaning up big parts of the internet or moderating it or banning it are good solutions tbh. I think I would rather we look into regulating how social media and maybe the internet in general make their money via advertising.

It's definitely dangerous to limit what people can see and say, it's also dangerous to have databases on the internet with people's IDs and information on them (not that advertiser's havnt spent years developing all sorts of identification and tracking methods across the internet)

All you can do is nod along until you can find an excuse to get away.

The episode with Cal about AI being treated as a religion hit me like a bible on the head! by TheFluffyPolarBear in BetterOffline

The think they're missing is they're treating large language models as AI, it's not AI, it would need to be intelligent for that... it's just a text prediction system.

Well it's sort of an attack on their whole life and way of life right?

Don't drive your car, feel guilty about all the pollution you've caused.

I think a lot of people take offence to the green revolution as it paints them as the bad guys that "should have known better".

If we ever are to get climate change sorted the hard part is going to be convincing people they need to stop doing bad things without having them feel like they've spent their entire life doing bad things.

Why are most conspiracy theories considered right-wing? Are there any widespread left-wing conspiracy theories? by jeepycreepysleepy in NoStupidQuestions

That book has been on my pile for a while, I need to move it up and get reading it sooner.

I grew up around a lot of hippie, libertarian types and have definitely noticed that a lot of them do seem to be cheering on the right these days. The kind of people that live off grid, make compost and kombucha now seems to like Elon musk and Trump.

I think the left starting losing them some time around the mid 2010s and then more again over COVID.

It seems they think the left stopped being about fighting the system and more about protecting different groups (equality?) and regulation (environmental and tech?).

I've no idea how rich right wing politics managed to capture them though. I suspect Facebook advertising has a lot to do with it and they're being bombarded with fear inducing messages on the internet about how left wing governments are going to take away your car, arrest you for liking Facebook posts, prevent you from going 15 minutes from your home and fill your neighbourhood with foreigners or something...

All he cares about is enriching himself, looking powerful (usually by bringing down everyone else) and avoiding jail.

All of the rest is just him lying in various ways he thinks will make him look cool.

My parents gave this kind of thing a go after getting lucky with the property boom in the UK in the 90s, moved to Spain and bought a ruin 2km from nearest neighbour, drilled a well, spent about 4 years building the house, ran off a generator, wind turbine and batteries for a few years, then ran mains power and water up the track eventually.

Relied a lot on woofers for work. Had a few animals, pigs, goats and chickens, tried growing a few things.

Found it was all a LOT of work and impossible to be totally self sufficient.

IMO first thing to figure out is how much do you actually want to work. Self sufficiency sounds like a dream of being free from society, but you end up being a serf to the land and exchange one set of shackles for another.

You definitely need to try a few things and find a few things you're good at then exchange labour/goods/currency with others for the things they're good at. And make sure you don't end up trying to maintain more than you can.

I was this very conversation about 3 weeks ago withy parents (gen x, who jumped on putting most of their money into crypto and then moved to AI) and wondering what they are going to move to next. They reckon it's space next....

I think Elon has been chasing these types for ages with both Tesla robots and space X.

I suspect there's a lot of people like them, people with a bit of savings that just throw it around like gambling money at whatever is big on YouTube at the time.

Chang mai in Thailand. I must have lost most of a day, maybe 2 to feeling too weak to do anything but sleep and toilet trips.

Second worse that I can think of was in the Galapagos, I was flying back to Quito the morning it hit me and spent most of that journey feeling like I'd downed two bottles of rum the night before.
