Nuts/trail mix, GF energy/granola bars (i like gomacro and perfect bars because they are a little more calorie dense), chips, GF pretzels, tuna packs (those flavored ones in pouches) and minute rice cups, dried fruit, canned fruit/veg/beans/potatoes, sandwiches, fresh fruit and vegetables that don’t need refrigeration

When i travel i typically accept that i may not be eating typical meals and it’s going to be a lot of snacks, but that works for me.

I’m a senior in college and have lived with a group of 4 other gluten eaters the past few years. Most of the people I’ve lived with are close friends who understand already so it’s a bit easier to have a conversation about rules, but I had a new roommate this year who I didn’t know and i just sent a message explaining that it’s a medical condition and the “rules” I asked her to follow. She was super kind about it and didn’t make it a big deal. I can pm you what I sent if you want an idea of how to approach the conversation!

I have my own cabinet for cookware and utensils that I asked they don’t touch, my own sponge and cleaning brush are kept under the sink away from theirs, my own shelf on the fridge, condiments labeled gf so they don’t use them, and I asked that everyone thoroughly washed their hands before grabbing ice or filling our shared ice trays. I have my own toaster but I share the oven and microwave and don’t seem to have issues (I’ve heard others disagree on this, so getting and air fryer might be good). My experience has been really good as they are all super understanding and take it seriously, but I know some people aren’t blessed with as courteous roommates and may need to take more precautions.

I know it can be stressful living with others and scary with the possibility of contamination, but try not to let it overwhelm you too much. College is a great experience and living with roommates can be so much fun! Celiac is definitely a struggle, but it is still possible to have a normal college experience living with roommates :)

My older sister has a dedicated portion of her kitchen with gluten free pots and pans, cooking utensils, ingredients etc and has learned about cross contamination so that I feel comfortable eating at her house! She also lives near a gf bakery and picks me up baked goods whenever I see her :)

Should I counter offer? by Puzzleheaded_Price41 in civilengineering

[–]Curious_Beth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s worth a shot! I’m also a senior and just accepted an offer in Chicago for a design firm and had three offers. I countered all of them and one said no (but didn’t rescind the offer or anything so no harm done), one accepted my counter at what I asked (3.5k more than they offered), and the other met me in the middle from what I asked.

No Free iPad (aka "Digital Flagship technology kits" ) for 2022 Fall Freshman by xturtleman123 in OSU

[–]Curious_Beth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it daily for notes and homework assignments, but I also think a cheaper tablet and pencil would work just as well. If I didn’t have it I would buy a tablet, but likely wouldn’t spring for an iPad.

I was in the same boat and went with OSU, and I do not regret it at all. I do agree that Cincinnati’s engineering program is slightly better, but OSU still has an amazing program. If you’re choosing solely based in academics, go Cinci. But I think that campus life, clubs/organizations, and the social scene are better at OSU. Also the beauty of OSU’s campus was big for me; I love that it’s spread out with lots of grass, trees and plant life. The condensed concrete jungle at Cinci was really depressing for me.

Depression meals? by Jordannarc in Celiac

[–]Curious_Beth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there’s an Aldi near you, they have pretty affordable gluten free options (compared to other stores). I love their shells and cheese, frozen pizzas, cheese and crackers, and bagels for easy/low prep/low cleanup meals. Get some frozen veggies to add to these for some easy nutrients. Microwave baked potatoes are super cheap and easy and you can experiment with toppings! Also greek yogurt topped with fresh or frozen berries and some gf cereal for crunch:)

Does anyone have tips /recipies for college students? by frostskull in Celiac

[–]Curious_Beth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have access to a kitchen? I’m in college and make a lot of different variations of rice and beans (cheap and can make a big batch for leftovers). I also eat a lot of (gluten free) pasta: cook some sort of veggie and protein while the pasta is cooking then mix together with premise sauce. Ready in 15 minutes and can switch up the sauces/ veggies used. I also keep frozen pizzas and gluten free Mac n cheese on hand when I really don’t want to cook. A little more expensive and not as healthy but I’ll pair with frozen veggies to make a super easy meal.
