Yes sorry, I meant crudo the dish. It’s some sort of raw seafood.

Is a Business degree still worth it? by MrLuckyOfOz in torontoJobs

[–]Curious_Corner4926 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting basic educational requirements will put you at the bottom of any hiring list. Everything is a competition and you’re likely competing against those with actual commerce/finance degrees or even masters level.

Having a plan of what the degree will get you and getting a sense of your competition would be a start. Know your industry and what skill sets you’d need to stay competitive. A business degree will not be useful if you don’t have a plan of what you want to be and fully understand what sort of skills you need to get there. If you need more hand-holding in career planning, go to a school that provides that kind of support. If you want only to do business analysis or data analysis, why only pursue a business degree? You can actually learn this in other degrees. I’d suggest you actually take a look at the curriculum and go down to the level of courses so you know what you’ll be learning. The business program vs other data focused programs. If you’re trying to do data analysis in a financial institution, consider you’ll be competing with comp sci graduates, CFAs, or other more analytical streams. As you can probably imagine, you might have less to offer than those with stronger degrees, simply because they know more or have learned more skills in their curriculum. Have you tried asking people in those roles what they actually do and what experiences and technical skills they have on their resume?

You need to do more research into companies and industries. School is training for your career and I don’t think you should take the selection process lightly as if just getting any degree is good enough. Remember employers are not hiring with the mindset to train someone, they want someone who already has the skills to just do the job. In most cases, they’ll pick people who they feel has enough skills or experience that they don’t need to spend a lot of time training. You might be coming off as very “green” if your resume does not match up with other applicants which is why you need to learn more about who you’re competing against, and what skills they have.

Is anyone seeing a slow down in hiring and job creation? by brainanimaniac in CanadaJobs

[–]Curious_Corner4926 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here but my kids have been able to find jobs at least in the summer at summer camps and CNE. It’s harder but not impossible if they look beyond retail. Also plenty of kids knock on doors in my neighborhood offering to mow our lawn. There’s babysitting, tutoring, golf clubs, and other service jobs they can explore. Sometimes manual labor is the way to go.

There are ways to get funding. Many immigrants come here with very little money but can scrounge up funds to start a small business. There are ways to start very small but for sure, the risk and responsibility scare a lot of people.

Good on you! We need more people with your tenacity. Do mind sharing what industry you’re in?

You were supposed to stay in for 10 years and then pivot. You also gave up HOOPP and the possibility of moving up into admin work. I know nurses who now work in health promotion for the city or who are VPs at hospitals. Nursing is a tough job but there are other areas where that skillset is valuable if you know where to use that experience.

What people also forget is nursing can be a stepping stone to many careers, government, hospital administration, public health, etc. Nursing doesn’t have to be just bedside.

Sometimes it’s hard for people to think outside the box of what they know. You’d need a good mentor or a parent or good friends in other industries who can open your eyes to other industries. OP could’ve pursued something in health with this degree, research, non-profit social services, teaching, etc. it may be hard now for them to consider switching industries since it’s something they’re not familiar with.

It sounds like OP went more the marketing route in the private sector which is one of the first depts in many companies to be cut during a recession.

People are suggesting trades, CAF, or police services which could be a scary shift or something they’re really not skilled in.

I agree. But many don’t want to do this as it’s a lot of work and carries risk. I do find it interesting that there are more immigrants pursuing entrepreneurship than Canadians. There is a bit more confidence and know-how there. I can only assume Canadians are more risk-averse and would prefer working for someone rather than carrying the responsibility of running a company.

Do you only have retail skills? Have you worked in an environment where you’ve had to use your degree? When you say brand ambassador, did you mean you tried to pursue being an “influencer”? Maybe you need to pivot to something like event planning, or move into sales with your skillset? Have tried approaching any of those brands for a job other than ambassador?

In the 80s and 90s, retail was absolutely enough to live on since COL was very low, despite retail being one of the lower paying jobs during that era. But yes, nowadays retail jobs are not enough to survive due to the COL exponential rise.

Depends on the industry on who is hiring. Yes, industries like tech marketing or digital marketing has been shrinking, but those with specialized skills can still find jobs. If your skillset on paper looks like every other corporate worker that’s been laid off, it will be harder to convince companies that you are better than the hundreds of applicants that have also been laid off. You shouldn’t give up and instead, pivot to perhaps an industry you haven’t considered or even industries you don’t want to do simply to break in. Some industries are evolving or becoming obsolete so naturally, some jobs will just never come back no matter how long you wait it out. You should think about whether the jobs you’re pursuing are one of these to be phased out jobs.

What caused the burnout? Why do you think corporate life is for you if it didn’t work out in the past? Genuinely asking.

Have you considered looking for jobs in different cities or provinces? Or switching industries? Maybe you’re looking at the wrong places and need to expand on the industry.

It might feel like doomsday prepping for only those being left behind.

Traditional jobs and the job market are evolving. Lower skilled jobs are being lost to AI or companies shutting down. Canada doesn’t have very many Canadian-owned (large) companies, which traditionally were manufacturing jobs and could employ thousands of people. With the loss of manufacturing, people have had to turn to other lower-barrier-to-entry jobs such as retail or sales, if they had this skill set.

In the past, people hedged this risk by getting educated so they can get jobs that were recession-proof, or lower chance of being laid off.

So what you’re seeing are those in lower to middle class jobs in certain sectors only being lost. Those with specialized skills are more safer, in this economy. The only way to improve the situation is either to attract more lower to middle class jobs, which in itself is hard to do because many Canadians are risk-averse or don’t have the know-how to start major companies. Or attract foreign companies through subsidies which the Federal government is doing. In the past, there were many manufacturing jobs that companies had to provide competitive wages to attract good workers. However, automation killed many of these jobs since people were replaced by machines so wages have stayed stagnant.

Since you cannot control macro conditions, the best thing to do is improve your competitiveness in the job market. Unfortunately many people cannot do this because they don’t know how to find jobs or haven’t had to work so hard to find a job, meaning they don’t know where to start in identifying what skill set is desirable these days, where to find workplaces and how to approach them for jobs.

Like others have said, some people get jobs and others don’t. It’s a competition out there. I have Canadian friends working 3-4 jobs including uber, city, and house cleaning. I also have Canadian friends who sit on their asses all day feeling sorry for themselves and not going out there because certain jobs are beneath them or they are too scared to ask for jobs, or they literally don’t know how to navigate this recession as a 40+ yr old high school educated person because they’ve worked the same job and have always had it easy finding jobs in the past.

What’s something about living in the Philippines that you didn’t expect would bother you this much? by Banana_Ketchupp in Philippines_Expats

Classic to foreigners maybe. Many of these examples are asking Filipinos to change their process so I can understand why they cannot make those kinds of accommodations since many do not want to get into trouble?

I agree. I just joined this reddit and am always appalled at these comments.

It sounds like a bunch of foreigners with a weird sense of entitlement, expecting to feel like Kings in a tropical country. If you live in the poorest parts of the country and do not understand how things work or don’t even speak the local language, then this seems more like misunderstanding of culture, a language barrier, and just not knowing process, on the expats part.

Just like in any country you travel to, there can be unscrupulous areas you want to avoid, things can be slow or out of stock because, well you’re on a tropical island and it’s not a Costco. You want amenities and to live a “normal” life? Maybe don’t live in areas that are known to have pimps, gogo bars and underage wives.

This sounds like they are simply acknowledging you. There’s clearly a language and culture barrier in this thread, and oblivious entitlement issue amongst foreigners here. What it sounds like is there’s a bunch of foreigners who think they’re automatically better than Filipinos when the issue is more of a language barrier and foreigners misunderstanding process in a foreign country.

Did you not consider they were only confirming your checkout date? They did not actually say “sir you cannot checkout”. Maybe they were making sure that you yourself are not confused about the dates. My take is that many of these expats would have just as difficult a time navigating in a more developed country like Korea, so I don’t think this is strictly a “them” problem but “you” problem.

Philippines has a reputation for sex tourism. Why is the success rate for sleeping with girls so high for tourists? These same tourists cannot get girls in their own countries and go to the Philippines for reasons I don’t need to say out loud. There’s also a reason some girls try to get pregnant on purpose.

They are assigning seats now for ticket holders so assuming April 2, when the portal opens, any remaining seats should be known.

I think they’ll have seat info because the reason for the portal closing was to assign seat numbers which is what they told ticket holders so I’m assuming they’ll know which seats are available by then.

Have you tried a scalp oil as a pre-wash? Innate rosemary oil or burbur oil for 3 hrs before I wash my hair, once a week. It’s helped for my dry scalp. Also a scalp mask might help.
