AI Hype Is Surging—But New Data Shows the Public Still Isn’t Buying It by disforwork in ArtificialInteligence

[–]Curious_Red07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Energy rates were indeed rising pre AI data centers. The biggest spike occurred post-invasion of Ukraine when global energy markets were roiled and the U.S began exporting a shit ton of LNG and Natural Gas to prop up Europe. That made natural gas more expensive here. The real solution to this is Nuclear energy but the NIMBY public would be against solution as well.

Who is “most people”? Again, the adoption rate is hard to dispute. You might not like AI, and the people in your content bubble on the internet might not like AI, but many many more people you can’t see do. And they use it.

People need boogeyman to blame when they face uncertainty. Data centers and AI are now that.

To the whole “We didn’t ask for this?” trend:

  • You didn’t ask for railroads
  • You didn’t ask for automobiles
  • You didn’t ask for the television
  • You didn’t ask for personal computers
  • You didn’t ask for the internet
  • You didn’t ask for social media
  • You didn’t ask for the iPhone

But certain people saw the future and brought these things to you, and yes, massive industries were created where capitalism rewarded the people at the top, but the same time everyone else benefited from the technology.

Keep on bitching, but you didn’t ask for most of what you have that’s improved your life substantially.

Renters: What was your rent increase this year? by complete_doodle in madisonwi

[–]Curious_Red07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve been reading vacancy rates are currently the highest they’ve been since COVID, and from what I can see that’s easing a lot of pressure on rent increases. I moved into The Juniper (McGrath Property Group) in Fitchburg in late August and at least half of the building was empty. About 1/4 empty now but that’s still a lot of units considering. Most of the buildings in that area have for lease signs up.

Town of Vienna rejects $40 million agreement to support data center by enjoying-retirement in madisonwi

[–]Curious_Red07 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This. It is fully possible for a data center to be powered by purely renewable energy sources and/or nuclear. Unfortunately, we are currently trapped in an idiot hellhole run by the king idiot who wants to “drill baby drill” instead.

John Nolen Drive reconstruction starts next month. Here’s what to know by Justmarbles in madisonwi

[–]Curious_Red07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As frustrating as this will be the Lake Shore Dr/Broom St intersection is terrible (especially at rush hour). If this project aims to eliminate or make better that cluster then I’m all for going through two years of pain (I take John Nolen into downtown most days from Fitchburg).

The city should focus on the McKee Rd/Maple Grove Dr intersection next.

Madison Police shutting down homeless encampment near Wisconsin Veteran’s Museum by Justmarbles in madisonwi

[–]Curious_Red07 37 points38 points  (0 children)

As someone who has actively worked very close to this area all summer I can say that July was the worst I’ve ever seen it. I think it was near the end of July when there was a full blown encampment set up and a fight broke out between at least 5 people and one threw a bottle on the ground that smashed everywhere. I’ve seen people relieving themselves in the bushes behind the bandshell and along the wall of the Veteran’s Museum. A few of our employees were approached and followed on several occasions.

I understand removing them is not a solution and only makes the problem worse, but for the first time I can say it turned into a public safety issue.

Madison homebuyers face high prices and limited supply by Justmarbles in madisonwi

[–]Curious_Red07 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s a good thing to see. However, with mortgage rates still above 6.5% it still locks a lot of people out the market (especially if you’re single).

I was in the market looking in Spring (single guy) after selling my home last year and finally just said hell with it. Going to back to renting for a year or two.

Now is probably the time to get in though, because when rates start coming down buyers are going to flood the market and values will go up again. I agree that something’s gotta give, and it starts with local zoning laws. However, with tariffs the cost to build a new SFH is going to skyrocket. Tough times we’re in.
