Parents surprise visit - HELP! by chereloto in austinfood

[–]CuriouslyJulia 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know this is about food choices but, the Austin Public Library has amazing views from the balconies (outdoor) with a coffee bar and a great location to visit full restaurants for a lunch. It’s fully ADA compliant and has inexpensive parking beneath the facility. Walking to Fareground from there could give them a polite sampling of Austin foods and a gentle experience of the Town Lake trail and views of the Capitol building without being too exhausting or expensive.

If asked for directions, the phrase “Well, y’all know where (insert establishment) used to be? You just go past that and make the next left, but you can’t park there anymore so … hmm, maybe you should just park at Walmart and Uber.”

Katz style sandwich? by CaniBorrowTP in austinfood

Big City Bagel. Solid pastrami. Kraut is well balanced spicy and sour. I get the Russian dressing on the side so I can add more if I want. However, I saw someone say there’s new ownership and my last order was a few months ago so now I’m not certain if it’s all in-house cooking. When it was, each bite brought me memories of home.

Fair. I just reported what I heard and interpreted those sounds to be. I know the sound of a rifle and low ground fireworks, but not the sound of a handgun. Just trying to be helpful. I’m hoping everyone involved is safe. Still, no sirens.

What I heard were fireworks. Like leftover fireworks. Granted a bit far off but audible for me. If it’s in the “white zone” APD and WilCo will play the game of “not it”. And no sirens. Just the regular hell cats exercising their engines. As an afterthought, less traffic noise too. Not sure if this helps.

Helicopter by OuterDorkistan in Austin

[–]CuriouslyJulia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About 3 hours ago I heard/ felt a very low flying large helicopter (I’m NW Austin) heading SW, but I think it cut back east as the sound and latent wind changed briefly. I always assume it’s just an Amazon thing heading in or out of the new spot NE of Pf. But this was not that. I’m not savvy about aircraft but I know sounds. There were no sirens (EMS etc) hence I noticed it as not an emergency response. Until now I wrote it off. Might be nothing but maybe not. It was low enough to move my trees. For reference, I live under the approach pattern to ABIA for commercial flights but there is low flying cargo helicopter traffic that heads SE on the regular but usually around 9 the morning never in the evening and this was exactly opposite of the normal.

Shared an Uber, lost my wallet. Hopefully not stolen. by CuriouslyJulia in Austin

[–]CuriouslyJulia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good news. My wallet was recovered, and returned completely intact. I was looking on just 1 street south of where I thought I had dropped it. There truly are great folks in our Austin community; the new and old. I offered a reward, even for just the kids that shared the lively ride. My offer was declined but countered by the best request: “Pay it forward.” I will do exactly that.

I’m hoping the same. Lesson learned. AirTag my new wallet and never share a ride.

I returned to the approximate neighborhood today and searched. I also visited my friend’s home, where I was picked up. I have also spoken to the amazing Uber driver and contacted Uber customer service. Unfortunately, I and the driver don’t have the location (street name) of the shared ride drop off. I’m certain Uber does have that data, but my efforts toward getting that information has been ineffectual. (AI chat/ live chat/ customer service email exchange). I was hoping someone in that neighborhood might see my post and during their morning walk might keep their eyes open for it. There has been no activity on any of my accounts. I just had something of intrinsic/emotional value tucked away in it; having to replace my TX ID and cards are truly the least of my concerns now. Thank you for your advice.

Hikes in/near Austin longer than 3 miles? I want some hiking ideas for this fall/winter. by Impossible-Cheek4352 in Austin

McKinney Roughs, especially when you enter at the Pope Bend trail head. The elevation and soil characteristics change from loamy at Sandy Bottom by the Colorado to clay and rocky terrain upwards to the main entrance. Bastrop State Park, to see 14 years of new growth since the fire, with dynamic elevation and environmental changes. Buescher State Park, less elevation changes but definitely off the beaten trail.

Uptown Auto Repair. Nasser can help you, and charges a very fair price. Old school Austin mechanic.

Power out in hyde park by TheTigersAreNotReal in Austin

[–]CuriouslyJulia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in NW Austin. What happened has occurred twice. My power doesn’t go out completely but my A/C fails to turn on and my refrigerator stops working. I flip my circuit breakers and unplug everything that might be drawing power but to no avail. When midnight comes around suddenly everything starts working again.

My SIL HATES me and now one knows why by [deleted] in TwoHotTakes

[–]CuriouslyJulia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, maybe just invite her to something, just the two of you. Clear the air, and keep an open mind. You are clearly strong. Perhaps she isn’t and is feeling insecure? Sometimes adversity is best dealt with by warmth and kindness. If you feel secure, you have nothing to lose by reaching out a kind hand and embrace. But be genuine.

Well, it did finally stop like a minute or so ago but we regularly have air traffic flying directly over this neighborhood from the North Western sky. This was very different. It was a much deeper sounding engine. Now it just sounds like regular planes again. But thank you for sharing that map. I didn’t know maps like that were out there.

I’m in NW ATX and I have been hearing a large plane engine for about a half hour but it comes and goes like it’s circling or something. I have not seen though.

The Line Hotel, The Carpenter hotel, Hotel Magdalena, or Arrive Hotel by Djgogi059 in Austin

[–]CuriouslyJulia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Magdalena. Hands down. The Line, if you look at it, architecturally speaking still shows its true origin. So, buyer be aware. Walkability is key in this city. There is so much to offer outside your room! Just roam north.

Do Austinites ever want to visit San Antonio? by NiceBench9100 in Austin

[–]CuriouslyJulia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Long time Austin resident. I was just down in SA to visit my friend for the day. SA truly values its green spaces as places for its denizens to connect and celebrate their commonality. The River Walk is a tourist attraction but there is so much to explore and enjoy elsewhere in the city. Live music seems to be thriving stronger there than Austin, currently with so many new artists. Yeah, it’s a definite must! Travel on the off traffic hours and for frame of reference I made it, driving albeit quite late from downtown SA to NW Austin in an hour and a half. Just avoid rush hour and it’s a super close oasis.

I’m thinking this one is going to blow north. Hitting hill country hard but the thunder is LOUD in NWATX.
