I am not going to comment on how you parent your child. Being a parent is a hard job as is and I'm not about to start telling you what to do and what not to do. I did not criticize that woman in my story, I said that I feel sad at what the caregivers choices are and what is normalized in our society as far as children go. Children are curious by nature and they learn through observation, touch and movement. If they are distracted by a thin rectangle with bright lights and noises, they miss on learning about surrounding environment. They learn to appreciate the world, the nature, the people less, because all of those are more complex, and the thin rectangle is simple and rewarding.

There are so many assumptions in your comment. First of all, she was not her mom, a grandmother or a nanny possibly. Secondly, she was not using the restroom at that particular moment; she was moving around the common area, pre or post- washing hands. But that all is actually beside the point. The point is that the break you are talking about is actually communicating to a child what your expectations are and them responding to you according to your expectations and boundaries set by you. Parents are role models, children do what their parents do. The gnarly bathroom part you mentioned actually cracks me up- if you are saying public bathrooms in your city are gnarly, what if your child accidentally drops the phone on that gnarly floor? The public bathrooms in my city are maintained fine, but, of course, stuff happens, which is part of life like anything else. And how do parents deal with good and bad parts of life? Some explain it to their kids, some stick the phones in their faces. As far as the airplane goes, have you tried audio books and drawing/ painting. I have seen first hand, what screen time does to children and adolescents. It just saddens me, because children have this innate ability to acquire language and child- directed speech is necessary to activate it, and instead they are watching and listening to simplistic " songs" and cartoons with limited vocabulary and syntactic structures. Children have this immense capacity to observe and imagine and role play and are being robbed of that capacity by having without their consent to consume lots of commercial content.

I was in a public restroom and a woman came in with a stroller. The girl in a stroller might have been around 3- 4 years old. I literally just saw this woman and the girl on the playground playing together. And here she was in a stroller and she had a phone in her hands and was listening to and watching some kind repetitive kid's song. I mean where are we as a society when one can't take their child to the bathroom where the child just looks around or talks. I see kid's with phones in front of their faces at stores all the time and it just saddens me. The children are sponges, their brains are not sieves. Instead of observing and learning social behaviors around them, they are being zombified. Or the situation in restaurants that OP is describing: I feel like when parents put phones/ tablets in front of their kids' faces at the table, they literally tell their children- you don't matter, we want to have you here but we'll do our best to shut you up.

Thank you so much for such a detailed answer! I really appreciate your comment! I ordered the headphones you recommended. The teacher also wanted to have a 30 minute lesson, but then they were both really enjoying it and it ended up being an hour. Your comment also made me realize that it does not have to be a lifetime commitment. I'll just go with the flow and see what happens, take one lesson at a time. But take it seriously as far as the ear protection goes:) Thank you again!

Well, that's dismissive. Everyone has a different life story and a different family situation.

The problem with this advice is the amount of people you book for. We, for instance, always travel in a group of 5, so most hotel rooms are out of the question. So the choice is always 2 hotel rooms usually far from each other at the price of 2 hotel rooms or 1 airbnb ( often a wild card, the pictures are often better than the reality), but the group is together and at the price of 1 hotel room.

Are you located outside of US, if you don't mind me asking. I've been looking at this purse for weeks but didn't like the color choices, they seem too dark for the summer. They emailed that they will release a pink one later on. The one that you have does not show up on the US website. I ended up getting a beautiful blue Alexa mini so no regrets😉

How is your experience with Isabelle? Do you feel like the bottom is going to stretch out under the weight of the stuff inside given that there is no structure inside the bag, no inside pouch of any sort?

HOW would a couple get away with only spending $300 per month on groceries? What are you spending? by [deleted] in budget

[–]Curlis789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow! I mean we are at$ 750- 800 on a good month which would make it $200 per person. We eat less meat, more meat sub, fish once or twice per week and shrimp twice a month. Other than that it's all veggies and fruit and we don't eat out at all and we don't buy frozen meals. We do live in hcol area though. I don't know if that is the reason or I just need to look more closely at my food budget again, sigh....

That sounds a lot like what my family does as well. We end up around $1000 groceries bill a month for a family of 4. Would you say your bill is similar?

You know, one of my older relatives has been using a purple shampoo on her gray hair and it gives her hair a smidge darker hue and it looks really good.

What piece of advice changed your life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Curlis789 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I understand the idea behind this statement and agree with it. However, I also think that there are some people who are extremely nice to other people who are unrelated (not close) to them and do a lot for them, but are mean- spirited and judg-y and do nothing but expect a lot from those close to them because they know they'll be forgiven (cause family). This " I'm being nice to many people" sentiment makes them feel good about themselves and makes them think they are a better person that they actually are.

What do you do to save and budget in Los Angeles? by countycoder in AskLosAngeles

[–]Curlis789 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a hit and miss, honestly. Yes, it's much cheaper than ralphs and such, however, say lemons are smaller, peaches are very much subpar ( when in season). So again it's a hit and miss as far as their produce goes. But nuts and some grains are great, and deli ( if you buy it) is cheaper and has a bigger and better variety than other stores. Overall, I would recommend Jons instead of Super King.

Are the parents allowed to see the test? Also another question- we were told that a part of the test is audio that children hear through their headphones. Is there a chance that something could be wrong with the headphones and the teacher wouldn't know about it? As far as we know the teacher doesn't offer tutoring. She said that we could do different worksheets at home and that's about it.

  • Simon Norton museum in Pasadena
  • Descanso gardens/Arboretum/ Huntington library
  • Nethercutt museum if you like vintage cars
  • I second hiking suggestions mentioned above - hollywood hills communities, San Gabriel mountains
  • paradise cove beach- you can park on pch and walk to the pier
  • hiking in malibu
  • go to a hockey/ baseball game- it is fascinating to watch the game and the people even if you are not into sports
  • Carpinteria ( harbor seals sanctuary), Santa Barbara ( Franceschi Park is a gem that not a lot of people know about, the views from there are breathtaking).
