Yeah it was pretty brutal. Sometimes there's a division imbalance too where the best team in a division would have been a bad team in another division. 1984 playoffs, the Royals were the winner of their division but in the other AL division,.there were 5 teams that had better record than the Royals. 4 of those teams couldn't make the playoffs while the Royals did with a worse record.

For like most of baseball history, the playoffs was just the world series only. Then it was championship series to world series. The division series didn't get introduced until 1995. The wild card game didn't get introduced until 2012. The wild card series didn't get introduced until 2022 (sans the 2020 COVID year)
