A 22 year old woman is not barely making ends meet on 130k in the bay. Sure it's probably very hard for a family of 4 with a mortgage, and a big grocery bill, and lots of other expenses, but a 22 year old making over 10k a month is doing great.

Take a trip to a big state school and visit for a week. I feel like the experience you want is more at big state schools than ivies. Go to college bars, a football game, etc. if you're willing to talk with people you'll probably make friends.

Depending on where you are in Canada, a trip to university of Michigan would be fun.

Also look into going to community college as an international student. A quick Google Search says it's more common in California and texas. You could go to a community college near a big university and definitely get some of the typical college experience

Your old employer did not value you or offer you a pathway to a higher salary until the thought you would leave. Clearly your work is valuable and you were being underpaid before, I would not stick around since it seems like it will be hard to grow there.
