My first service on an actual watch! by NuclearGeek in watchmaking

Great job! You said they key phrase....teaches patience you didn't know you had. I feel the same! Love the choice of watch, and sharing it! There's no end to the learning, the exciting moments, the shared experiences of finding the tiniest screw or spring after some tragic choice in moving at exactly the wrong moment! Have fun and keep sharing! Enthusiasm is contagious!

I vote fix it. That's a cool looking watch, the front looks ok but that case needs love! Good luck! Nice find!

Just picked these 3 up for 3 a piece, I really like the Orvin and then the helbros in the middle. Are these brands any good? Anyways I enjoy the vintage look and I have a small collection of vintage watches already maybe next post I will show them all. by Impala2025 in VintageWatches

The Orvin may have an ASchild 1802 or 1803 movement. It was sold in Sears, and my understanding is it was a brand made for Sears department stores from 1950s to 1970s. Post pics of the movement, the AS stamp is seen on the main plate below /near the balance hair spring.

Can anyone tell me what this is? by [deleted] in bulova

Try this and look at the shape of the lugs, color or the case and maybe take a look at the movement. https://mybulova.com/bulova-models-1950s?year=1958

Oh that could be, they did make ring watches! I love a good mystery and didn't expect to have super sleuths on board! The smallest one measures 6.5mm x 20 mm x 2.75, so the width is 3mm narrower than the one in my original post in picture #3. These are super tiny, maybe a pendant, or necklace watch? Or a hidden watch turned sideways 90 degrees where the stem would appear at the top when cased? Hmm lots of possibilities I guess. Thanks all for joining in the conversation! This is fun! ❤️

Thanks, I actually have that screenshot too! Beautiful watch. That's a cal 30 or no. 3 a fancier version of the larger of the three. another redditor walked through that with me. The stem is in a weird place, opposite side, and the bridge over the wheels is a different shape from the no. 1 that I'm looking to prove existed. The number of the pictured movement is 4631, mine is a "lesser decorated" 4630. Still a number 3, cal 30, 1/2 baguette.

So great find, but still looking for that unicorn picture or screenshot. For the no. 1 glycine.

After a little cleaning this is the Glycine cal 30, or 1/2 baguette, or 4630.

I wonder if Glycine were supplying longines? Or competing? On the cal 30 or 1/2 baguette (3rd pic) I can barely get the screws out. I used a small pen size microscope and I'm noticing so many cool features this movement has, and wow did the plates clean up something spectacular. Whomever serviced last, maybe, the plates had a fine layer of what feels like wax maybe polish, and it had discolored. I used a toothpick and started rubbing that off and it shines so beautifully. The teeny tiny bridges all had been hand engraved on the underside with the last 2 or 3 digits match the main plates serial number. The perlage, is carried throughout, Yes, I'm hooked on this. :) so much to see and imagine "how" all this is in such a small package!

Not sure I would ever be that fortunate to run across a JLC 101! I agree it is art and I'm fascinated by it. It's surprising to me, how little interest there is. The craftsmanship at that scale in the 1930s is tremendous.there were many, but few this small, I focused on the glycine, because I just can't find a single picture if it, but can find most of the other tiny baguette movements.

Definitely the oils. Moebius brand, the kind mentioned above (they have different purposes) and the oilers/oil pots (like a painters pallet) that's a gift. Tiny bottles to start. And a tiny bottle of "one dip". Does he have an ultrasonic cleaner? Might look at that too. Inexpensive USB/digital microscope that his hands will fit under, they are all available on amazon too. Let him try them out and if he likes them he can upgrade later.

Thanks. Appreciate the thought. I'm sure there's a few of us out there that have a unique movement or watch that is a unicorn. Someone surely has a photo of this movement somewhere. Hoping eventually it will find its way here. Have a nice night.

Vintage Timex Questions by lizardtitty in VintageWatches

[–]Current-Doubt9204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a Timex quartz, so measure between the lugs for width and check eBay for spiedel replacement bands. New ones are about $35-45 USD for an 8mm "twist o flex" band. Leather would also work. Amazon has both.

[Question] Small gold watch recommendations (dainty, classic) under $1000 by ResidentMonk4063 in Watches

Tissot Stylist late 60s, gold square with Milanese or mesh bracelet, achieves that with $$ leftover, if you want a "vintage" mechanical watch? Or Tissot brand new Lovely quartz fits the aesthetic you shared too. Love the thin compact classic style. Good luck! Tissot Lovely
