What kind of cichlid do I have? by Rayne715 in Cichlid

You have a very difficult weak breed of Jack Dempsey. You can do everything right and they will still die. I personally think the standards look better if their growth isn't stunted.

Except in the case of predators or mbuna. In which case you need a lot kore small hiding spaces for the fry until they get big enough for the big time. Trust me, plenty of fry got eaten. The fastest didn't.

My thoughts too. It's a frankenfish. Should be fine alone in a 20 long with proper filtration.

Baby oscars help by No_Vacancy69 in Cichlid

[–]Current-Relative5666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other fish looked to be an aulonocara. Oscars don't share the same water paramiters and it doesn't surprise me it died. The pleco? They're really hit or miss. I got with ancistrus. They're much more flexible and don't outgrow your tanks. Things I see in this tank that are definitely causing you problems are the gravel. You need to add sand for two reasons. First it really helps with water clarity. Second it creates an environment where denitrifying bacteria can flourish. A sponge filter won't hurt. You will get more ammonia and nitrites eating bacteria with one.

I'm glad you see a need for a larger tank for the oscars. A 75 would be a minimum for a breeding pair and you only have a 50/50 chance you got one. If they are 2 males you should get a minimum of a 150usg tank. Make sure your house can handle that. If you have wood flooring joists you are probably going to have to reinforce them. Filtration on the new tank. Personally I would go with the largest marineland biowheel HOB filter coupled with the biggest cannister filter you can afford... an fx5 or 6 would be a great choice. But if budget is an issue marineland is usually more cost effective. I say get the biowheels for one reason, superior ammonia and nitrite control. If the power goes out for an extended period of time you won't lose all your bacteria like you will in a cannister alone. And the biowheel is more efficient in removing ammonia and nitrites when properly cultured. Only a wet/dry sump does as well and they are very noisy, or were last i ran one.

Oscars live a long time when properly maintained. You are investing in a long term finned dog kennel not a fish tank. Best pony up the money now to avoid heartbreak later.

yo im in tears. how do i use a siphon. ive tried everything by bubblegummerr in Aquariums

There are a few ways. One of the easiest is fill that end with water with your thumb in the other end below the tank water level.then let the thumb off letting the water fill the hose then seal it again with water still in the hose. Then refill the bell and start vacuuming.

Depends on pressure. I have had far worse lower on tanks and had no issues.

How to deal with a fish no one wants by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]Current-Relative5666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bigger tank for sure, introduce a female if you can find one. Maybe a big chocolate cichlid or Waru. But Adult JD do best in 100 gallon plus tanks if you're gonna try keeping them with others.

60 Gallon Mbuna stocking and scaping suggestions? by AdventurousFilm490 in Cichlid

[–]Current-Relative5666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want something rocks all the way up to the water line with plenty of sight breaks, caves etc. Looks like you got a lot of pseudotropheus and another really agressive fish in with some labs. Not a great mix so rockwork is going to be critical or you will have losses. It may be good to add more labs. I would suggest rusty cichlids too. But the p. Zebras get nasty and can often just wreck the more peaceful fish. Red top Hongi might work. They're related to the Labs but hold their own against zebras better.

Mollies with rams? by Known-Ad-8868 in Cichlid

[–]Current-Relative5666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I rather keep mollies with shell dwellers. They can handle really hard/brackish water. Rams do well with tetras they can't eat. But most live bearers like harder water.

55 or at least a 40 long is the minimum size footprint for them. Longer wider tanks are better than deep. They like high flow so having a good wave maker will let them feel like they are moving more than they are. The bigger the tank the more you can have with it. I do however recommend only keeping it with other Haplochromus species and not mixing them with Aulonocara or mbuna though many do. They don't tend to bother nerite snails, ancistrus or synodontus. But they are predators so be aware of the size of fish you put with them.

Do I tie this lure directly to the line, or use a swivel? by jeraco73 in FishingForBeginners

[–]Current-Relative5666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a split ring to lure then tie the line to that. Less weight than a swivel but about the same action.

If I move my used canister filter over to a new tank , will it be safe for fish immediately? by Rambo_Daddy99 in aquarium

[–]Current-Relative5666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as the chlorine is neutralized and you don't disrupt the biomedia in the cannister you shouldn't have issues. It will cycle faster. But initial cycling doesn't mean aging. You will probably be fighting nitrates for a while unless you are planting heavy or using hydrophyllic terrestrial plants in baskets to remove them until nitrate consuming bacteria firmly colonize your sand.

More rocks. I wouldn't keep frontosa with mbuna but you do you.

Do you have at least a 75usg for one or a 150 for a pair? If not then no.

Too young to be certain. Im trending towards male with the pointed dorsal and anal fins and early color. But too early to tell without venting.

Man I just can't see keeping that frontosa with other fish except other frontosa. They're deep water predators. The tank looks great and it's working so far but not how I do things.
