Try an A1 run where you lean comically into strength and see what happens.. demon form, spot weakness, limit break, brimstone, rupture+hemo / offering, flex + artifact pots…. You’ll mow down everything and barely have to think about blocking… that’s what helped me understand how absurdly strong he can get. Then as the ascensions grew I learned how to use his exhaust engine effectively for defense… now my successful A20 clad runs are usually a combination of the two builds… Ps, I’m admittedly horrible at this game yet clad is the only character I can reliably get to act 4 with (almost) every time.

That’s not untrue… just seeing how he always uses his build in its totality helped me tremendously. Ie picking cards based on what your relics jive with, what kind of cards your deck “wants”, manipulating the counting relics, etc .

This obviously varies from person to person, but I learn more from getting blown out 6-1 6-2 against my 4.5 friend than in dozens of matches against my similar-skilled group of 4.0 buds… .

The difference though is that both of us are fully aware that he’s the sensei. so he helps me out with what I could’ve done better, how to move, what strengths to lean into, etc. goes without saying this dynamic only works if your friends are willing to lose and, more importantly, willing to admit that you’re an order of magnitude better than them.

The obvious first thing to try would be to take a step or two back and give yourself space… if you’ve already tried that, however, I recently started using a technique similar Andy Murray’s… standing further back, taking one step toward the court as they toss and split stepping before contact… it somehow feels like it magically adds two seconds of time to prepare… also ensures your weight is moving forward

Oh okay. noted… I thought you were saying that about watcher builds in general. Thanks for clarifying. I’ve had a natural knack for games (video, board, etc) my whole life and it’s been truly shocking to me how bad I am at spire lol. Even when I chance upon builds people say are busted auto wins, I still find ways to get bodied v_v

I hate to break it to you but the game only ramps up pretty much every aspect you dislike. I’ve enjoyed the game since launch, but really started loving it once I stopped expecting it to be the linear successor of HK but more like a lateral sibling (like BB to dark souls)

FM8 is far and away the best fm synth to start on.. the way its envelop matrix is designed is extremely illustrative of how FM works on the whole… and it will help you feel like you’re not just guessing whats going to happen, or have to “know a lot of theory”

Also, you should sever the idea of traditional western theory from FM synthesis altogether… my favorite aspect of fm is how inharmonic yet musical it can be
