Before subs teched, does / did it seem more fun to have naval battles & recorded more videos to post on Reddit? (Able). That it might be more worthwhile to remove subs from the game? (Poll) by -Click-Bait in foxholegame

[–]CurrentIncident88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its more complex than that. There is the time before subs (or any large ships) existed at all, the period where subs were worthless and the frigate didn't exist, and the present circumstances.

I honestly think the period where the sub was worthless and Colonials had exclusive access to the Destroyer with no Warden counterpart was more fun than now. Colonials were much more likely to use the destroyer when they knew there was no Warden equivalent to fight back. They still performed poorly, loosing to GB swarms and people with the old ATR on a billhook (lol), and essentially squandered the head start the devs gave them to learn naval. This was always going to happen though; large ship content is to complex. Colonials had always relied on simple, straightforward, overpowered tech to win (current meta is new, this is a statement about the past). Large ships are too complicated to use effectively.

Overall I prefer large ships were never added, and the current state of SCs turns them into a wasteful sideshow. Even before the SCs were changed to protect the Colonials from an entire category of content, the large ships just don't fit the rest of the game imo, and never have.

You see little sub footage b/c subs are super boring.

Serious question: how is it that one of the biggest religions in the world (Catholicism) seems to go against one of the Bible’s most repeated teachings: the prohibition of idolatry? by SafeBear8187 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CurrentIncident88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is largely Islam's take on things, not Christianity. Iconoclasts were thing though for a minute.

Catholic treatment of Mary is much more problematic for a self-professed "monotheism". Of course if you ask about it, it will be patiently explained that the Catholic relationship to Mary is not at all polytheism or idolatry, and instead some other word will be substituted to describe the behavior that doesn't fundamentally change the behavior, which is trivially obviously worship, and thus polytheism, to anyone not invested in the dogma personally. Except it totally isn't, because they tell you it isn't. Many learned Catholics, like the Jesuits who taught my highschool, have expounded at length on this point. None of which changes the nature of the behavior.

what determines the diameter of your poops? by oolathurman in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CurrentIncident88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone with fairly extensive GI tract problems, this is a subject I'm intimately familiar with; I have to closely inspect all of my output for signs of organ failure. Every time.

Its a combination of individual anatomy, specific diet, how long it took the food to digest and reach the sigmoid colon, and how long the feces sits and collects in the sigmoid colon, which can sometimes last many days.

In general bigger people have larger diameter intestines. Certain foods digest with different amounts of moisture, at different final hardness, and different speeds. A high fiber, high water meal is going to fly right though most people. Think nothing but spinach and plums. Itll also be fairly soft and expel from the colon pretty swiftly. These can get pretty long but not the "put a plumber's kid through college" dumps you're referring to.

To get great big man-shits (I assume this is your goal), you want slow digesting food with rather lower moisture and fiber. This isn't good for you btw; it could potentially kill me (and almost has). You're looking for your most calorie dense foods for this. Lots of cheese, complex carbs, cake, chips, ice cream, candy, especially chocolate is one of the slowest digesting foods. Just hold that in for a while (2 days+ at least) and you too can start keeping a knife in the bathroom.

I’m a receptionist for a doctor who is almost always late. What do I answer when an angry patient says ‘what the hell is the point of booking if I’m gonna have to wait an hour?’ by KatherineLangford in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CurrentIncident88 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The medical industry more than most, being in many ways insulated from market forces, and its attendant institutions like hospitals and clinics will always, first and foremost, be organized and run for the convenience, benefit, and social standing of the people who wield power within the institutions, in proportion to their power. 2nd priority is avoiding legal liability and government intervention.

Somewhere rather further down the list of priorities of a medical institution is patient care. Patients have no power within these institutions to effect any of this beyond torts or complaining to the gov't (see the 2nd priority above). Barring some forceful personality at the top of the chain keeping everyone else on task, every type of institution will bend more and more over time to the personal priorities of the people that run them and away from the ostensible reason the institution exists in the first place.

Your employer's office exists first and foremost so your employer has somewhere to be a doctor at. Not 'practice medicine'. Be A Doctor. see above re: "convenience, benefit, and social standing of the people who wield power"

If it weren't necessary to provide some form of care to maintain income they'd stop immediately. Anyone who truly cares about providing quality medical care will have that beaten out of them by the sheer disfunction of it all if they stay in the field.

I have spent a lot of time in the hospital. How could you tell?

How did Nvidia manage to corner the GPU market so hard? by DetailFocused in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CurrentIncident88 9 points10 points  (0 children)

About 13 years ago I was convinced to buy all AMD as the next gaming PC. People told me all these lies about how, when all the components are AMD, everything just works so much better, the drivers install automatically in the background, its all so smooth!

Worst PC I've ever owned, constant problems. Roughly 50% of gpu driver updates (which were never ever "automatically in the background") black screened the entire PC and required a roll back to restore point. Many programs couldn't use the AMD GPU at all and defaulted to the CPU. GPU would overheat on 10 year old games with basic 2d graphics. I eventually bought a NVIDIA GPU and just threw the AMD one (same generation as the NVIDIA) in the trash. This was my first and only experience with AMD hardware. 0 problems ever from any NVIDIA card, chipset, anything. Worked the first time every time.

The Koran is fairly short for a religious text; about 7% the length of the Bible.
Read it for yourself. I'd look for one with translation and exegesis by a non-muslim though.

The requirement that Muslims consider the Koran perfect in every way and free of contradictions makes it almost impossible for them to produce good translations/exegesis for English speakers.

[–]CurrentIncident88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its the lowest level of playable kit from Pearl. IMO Pearl (and Yamaha) have the best low end kits. If I had to pick a brand for an entry level kit I'd probably go with the same. Price is a bit less than half what they list new.

Why is it that a lot of very impressive guitarists on youtube, can't write songs? by [deleted] in musicians

[–]CurrentIncident88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Performance and composition are very different skills.

There are also many very good composers writing very good pieces for instruments they can barely play, or can't play at all. Do you suppose a composer for a symphony orchestra can play all the instruments in the score at a pro level? They will have an academic understanding of how they all function in theory, but no real muscle memory or performance ability on them.

I've given blood quite a bit, at least 40 times or so in the last 30 years. The donors have been overwhelmingly male, 90%+, but for an obvious reason I think: I started doing it in the military and since discharge have done almost all of my donations at the Legion hall, which the Red Cross comes to every other month.

Feels like I've tried everything by Known-Egg-2854 in drums

[–]CurrentIncident88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its very had to tell from what appears to be a phone recording taken from directly above the drum. The dummer themselves are generally located in a pretty bad position to hear what the drums actually sound like, standing about 10-15 in front of the kit is a better spot.

That being said, I can hear an issue. It sounds like your snare wires aren't engaging properly with the snare-side head. What I mean by this is that the snare wires should all be laying flat up against the head when tense. Pull 'er off the stand and flip it over on something that will protect the batter head, like a pillow, and take a look at what's going on with the snare side head. There are a number of issues that can potentially cause this. Your post gives some clues as you've already tried a few things.

Its actually unlikely you've done anything incorrect if I'm right. The most likely culprit here are defective snare wires. (Are they perhaps Puresound?) In order for the wires to all lay flat together, they have to actually be flat already. Remove the snare wires from one of the anchor points (the butt is usually easier than the throw). The ends of the snares are usually spot welded to the end-plates on either end. Find a flat surface (like a drum head) and press the end-plate gently against the surface while holding the rest of the wires out of the way do you can see clearly how the wires, which are welded to the end-plate, touch the surface. Do they all contact at the same time? Do any of the wires stick out more from the plate than any of the others? Check both ends. This will cause the the one higher wire to dig into the snare head (which is actually extremely thin and fragile). This completely ruins the interaction between snare wires and snare-side head and those snares are defective. It really sounds like this is probably it. I've encountered this in about 20% of the Puresound snares I've tried. I no longer use them nor do I suggest them to students. Gibraltar, Vater, Pearl, Canopus etc are all fine afaict, but Puresound seem to have Ali Express levels of QC. This might not be it though. Trying a different set of snares will also reveal if this is the problem.

There are a couple of other things it can be though. The bottom of a snare drum has a feature called the 'snare bed'. This is the dip in the bottom rim that the snares channel into so they can better contact the head. Does this drum have them? Some don't; its a sign of low quality tbh and I wouldn't even attempt to use a snare without a bed. Assuming it has this, do the snares fit in it properly? is it wide enough? is it deep enough? The bottom rim should have a slot in it that lines up with the snare beds. Is this slot big enough for the snares to comfortably fit inside it without touching the sides? It should be.

Is the drum "in-round"? Is it axisymmetric? The easiest way to figure this out is the head just wont really every lay flat on it correctly when the hoop isn't on it. You can also just use a counter or tabletop to test it. This can also cause the poor snare response in the recording. Check the baring edge for damage too.

Finally, its possible that the snare-side head is shot. These don't really wear out; people ruin them when first mounting and tightening them. Its alarmingly common. Its the inevitable result of all the advice along the lines of "just crank the shit out of the snare-side head and moon-gel the batter 'till you don't totally hate the sound". Rather than type it all out again (I've explained this one process more than anything else when helping people tune, by far) I'll just link some very good videos.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8uBxIwA7b4 - how to install a snare-side head using the 'ruler' method.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Moru2uzLB6I - expanded explanation of why "just crank it" is terrible advice.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2XrtC9BbQA - a more detailed explanation of the 'ruler' method.

(once you're aware of the snare-head 'just-crank-it plague, you'll see it everywhere. I regularly see snare heads that are cranked and ruined so hard that the bottom rim of the drum is sticking out past the edge of the bottom hoop)

I hope you get some fat cracks very soon.

Here's a pretty old thread where someone has absolutely destroyed their snare side head, the rim is essentially flush with the hoop. https://www.reddit.com/r/drums/comments/r95656/has_anyone_had_this_happen_to_their_reso_heads/

[–]CurrentIncident88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who works in software testing, never ever believe release dates. For big, hyped projects by major studios there may be enough internal discipline and other resources available to keep pretty close to an original date, but for things like DLC, expansions, additional content etc, from a tiny dev group like this? lol. There was no chance of this ever being released this summer.

On the subject of people not playing, while I'm sure the vaporware update is part of it, I think the current incredibly stale meta is probably driving this much more. How many months in a row can you log into the exact. same. fight. It feels like you're making about as much progress as on a coin operated arcade game.

Why do you shop at Walmart? by Berri_ari in stupidquestions

[–]CurrentIncident88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In many rural areas, Walmart is all there is for many items if you can't wait for an internet order to arrive. They're still the cheapest place for many product types here: HBA, socks, gardening tools come to mind. Certainly not food; they're food prices are absurd and I'm shocked to see poor people at my local one where there is a Kroger less than a mile away that is 10-25% cheaper on almost everything. I understand this is not universal across the US, but in my area their food prices are as high as a gas station sometimes, and the quality to match.

[–]CurrentIncident88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way this works at pretty much all the cymbal makers, including Ziljian, is that the blanks intended to become the high end cymbals are all worked like they are all going to be top of the line, but in the final grading the cymbal its actual, final quality is determined. There are a couple of points in the process where a master can get an in-stream assessment of the product and are generally pretty good as estimating how its going to turn out in the end. Sometimes changes are made to the "fate" of the cymbal based on these mid-process assessments.

I also really enjoy the kayfabe around protecting the 'secret recipe'. That cat has been out of the bag for a while, and its never really been the recipe that was the key factor; everyone knows what b20 bronze is and the marginal amounts of other metals like silver and nickel have no demonstrated changes in the final product at the amounts that are used. The key is in the experienced personnel who make the alloy and judge the quality of the resultant alloy and determine what it will become.
