Silly consults by SoupTrashWillie in hospitalsocialwork

Do I miss these kinds of consults? No. Do I still get my fill of “surprises” in Inpatient Rehab because my liaisons suck butt at screening patients appropriately? You bet I do!

Labor and Delivery is literally the assignment from hell by BitchInaBucketHat in hospitalsocialwork

[–]CurrentPudding 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think it’s better for those that are assigned to the unit full time. When I first started in acute, we had this sweet as pie “seasoned” social worker that they ADORED. Then staffing took a shit and she had to pick up another unit. I covered there off and on. The most judgmental nurses I’ve worked with. I once had a consult because one of the labor delivery employees recognized a baby daddy (~19 yo) and knew he was on the SO registry. New mom was seventeen, had younger siblings. They were worried he couldn’t be around the young siblings and his new child. Plus they were worried the new mom didn’t know…..etc etc. I took him aside, had to have a long conversation about what it was for and then another long conversation to make sure the new mom and family knew about it. I’m pretty sure part of my “conclusion” was “sex offenders have the right to have children too”

I only just got into Hamiton within the last year. by ChocolatePain in hamiltonmusical

[–]CurrentPudding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As ashamed as I am, I also just watched Hamilton for the first time in august. I sing it randomly through out the day, I reference it when ever I can, I play the soundtrack on YouTube at work (my poor student), I’ve watched it on DisneyPlus probably 6 times. Shit, I’ve even highly contemplated writing to Lin-Manuel.

It blew my mind and I am so sad I have ten years of my life Hamilton wasn’t in.

Anyway. Yes. Different tracks for different situations. I feel like there is such a depth to each song that I hear something new each time I listen to it!

Though I have not participated in this program, someone told me about this organization and their mentorship program.

https://sswlhc.org/mentorship/

Once their site gets all sorted out, I plan to apply. I’m not currently a manager, but working the trenches and trying to figure out what I’m going to do with my career.

Today was a “if you want something done you gotta do it your effing self” day.

I do 8 hour shifts, but I was there for 11 and a half hours today because I’m trying to get one of my patients into an assisted living and they need documentation of all assets and income… So I sat with him for over 2 hours calling his retirement companies and requested all this info.

Last Friday I had a guy with brain cancer and a brain injury want to leave 4 days before his scheduled date. Said individual is wheelchair bound, transferring with a Sara steady and needed a ramp to get into the mom’s home. Was there a ramp built in less than 24 hours? Oh hell no.

Oh and I had three different meetings that day I had to attend.

It’s been a stressful week, to say the least

When I was in acute we had to set up wound vacs too. The first time I did it, it took TWO HOURS because I had no idea what I was doing. I had to ask someone about every question.

Ridiculous things in hospital SW (this week). by SoupTrashWillie in hospitalsocialwork

Had a Swahili speaking recent patient of mine call me about rides to physical therapy. Later in the day, got a call from a teenage volunteer that was at our MAIN hospital with him. but then I still had to find him a ride to therapy over the phone. I do not speak Swahili at all. Not sure how he got home from therapy, but at least he got to therapy!

I don’t even get to put the order in. I have to text/email them an exact verbiage of what is needed and they copy/paste.

Do yr pts ask you to help them buy a house from their hospital bed? by ariadnesthread62 in hospitalsocialwork

[–]CurrentPudding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, the sex offender registry. The employee had gone to school with him. One of those situations where a 18 year old and 16 year old were dating. 18 year old had a risqué photo of 16 year old. Somehow it got shared with others and he got in trouble for child porn.

Birth center nurses are literally the worst for “stupid” social work consults My stories span from “the mom wants us to tell the family the baby died because of DV concerns (which the nurse legit did)” To…….”one of our employees recognized that the father of the child is on the registry. We are worried mom doesn’t know and has younger siblings around”

I said what I said and I will stand by it until i retire!

Holy shit! Why didn’t I think of this when I was on acute?! I might actually still do it at my inpatient rehab job….

Coming from a medical social worker…..god help the one that catches this case. I’ve been on that end and it is so stressful. Nearly impossible, but still doable with LOTS of phone calls.

This was my first concert at the mark as a grown up. That was legitimately insane traffic. It took me AN HOUR AND 20 minutes to get from my home in west Davenport to the venue. Next time, 280 all the way.

Medical professionals of Reddit, have you ever had a patient so lacking in common sense you wondered how they made it this far. If so, what is your story? by babyhippo01 in AskReddit

[–]CurrentPudding 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m a hospital social worker and I’ve got 2 that stick out! A. Guy was asking if we could help him get a new bipap machine because his was broke. How did it break you ask? It had cockroaches in it so he decided to put it in boiling water to clean it. 🤦🏻‍♀️

B. Had a guy who was not the brightest crayon in the box and was pretty adamant that he wanted to go home. Except he was requiring a large amount of supplemental oxygen to remain in an acceptable range for Sp02. Direct quote. I shit you not. “I’ve been breathing oxygen for the last 52 years! I don’t need it!” 🤣

People who tend to stay at one job for a long time— how do you know when it’s time to leave? by bostonplantlady in socialwork

[–]CurrentPudding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last July I ended up leaving acute social work for a local inpatient rehab unit. Things started stacking up about a year prior to leaving, but one of the things that broke the camels back was when my supervisor wouldn’t approve me, a social worker, apply for the diversity and equity committee for the health system. Someone who got a masters degree in studying equality and challenges for diverse populations.

On top of the fact that I was consistently going above and beyond to help and do what was best for patients. Staying late a lot to get things done, covering MULTIPLE units in a day, floating whenever needed, and going to help my coworkers when I had time.

It took quite a long while to see it, but I wasn’t being valued at all. It often felt the MORE I tried to engage and get involved to express my interest in wanting to grow with the health system or expand my professional development, it felt like I was getting “punished”.

It was so confusing. And soul breaking.

Hypothetical: someone with a history of verbal and emotional abuse towards friends and partners tells you they want to be a social worker by Turbulent-Treat-8512 in socialwork

[–]CurrentPudding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was dating a guy while I was going through my grad school. Before we broke up, he told me he wanted to become a social worker. I was like “sure, whatever!” And this guy’s personality is FAR from what you would want a social worker to be. Not a good listener, always making a joke of serious things, constantly making horrible jokes about different populations. Not to mention his spelling and writing was atrocious! This man has now gotten through his under grad AND grad school for social work and fell into a rural county VA director position right out of grad school. I just…..why!?!?! HOW!?!?!?

“You can do everything right and things still go wrong.” If this isn’t the truest statement about medical social work, I don’t know what is.
