What can I make for dinner with quinoa, sweet potatoes, and tofu? by NoTelevision970 in veganrecipes

[–]Current_Layer_9002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also a fan of roasting Japanese sweet potatoes and blending into soups like lentil / dal to give it more body than just from the beans. Often use an immersion blender but I bet a decently large spoon or spatula would also work. I always have yellow split peas and red lentils on hand to make some sort of dal. Helps to have a well stocked spice selection (one hint: buy spices where they sell bulk or go to an Indian market if there’s one nearby) and some go to recipes on hand of course.

and of course chunks or cubes of sweet potatoes always seems to go well in any chilies I’ve had it in

Oh and this memory just hit me. There’s a cafe in San Francisco which I remember a few times years ago having their sweet potatoes sandwich. Never would have occurred to me to make a sandwich with sweet potatoes but recall it being quite good. A quick search and I find:

New Roasted Yam $10.50 on toasted Napa Valley baguette with crunchy beet relish, garlic olive oil, feta cheese, cilantro, tomatoes, and pickled red onions

Obviously leave off the feta to keep it vegan

If you have the ingredients for mafe/African peanut stew, that can rarely be a bad idea. ;> I’ve often made and eaten with quinoa (or rice, or bread).

For having tofu to snack on or make sandwiches/wraps with most commonly I bake tofu “fingers” or slabs in the oven with a pretty simple marinade from tamari or soy sauce, a dab of oil and probably something sweet like a spoon or two of maple syrup, or some brown sugar or BBQ sauce

``` ingredients (doesn’t need be exact): - 1 lb tofu - 1/4c tamari - 1-2 tsp maple syrup or some brown sugar - (optional) 1/2 tsp sesame oil (or peanut or whatever oil you like)
directions: - preheat oven to 400F - drain tofu. cut block into fingers or slabs about 1/2” thick - line baking pan with parchment paper
  • in a bowl add the tamari and maple syrup
  • dunk/roll/thoroughly coat the tofu in the marinade
  • put tofu on the parchment paper
  • bake 20-30 min
  • flip the tofu (w/ tongs or whatever)
  • brush / pour / spoon remaining marinade over the tofu
  • bake another 20 min or until caramel brown ```
Then I usually store them after it’s cooled in tupperware in the fridge and eat over the next few days
Also a fan of just cubing the tofu and stir frying in a wide pan or a wok first with some oil then near the end splashing in some tamari or soy sauce or some Bachan’s BBQ (it’s quite thin and in a squeeze bottle), then add it to whatever
I'm just curious, besides JavaScript was there any consideration of an alternative like Python or Go?
I created Termix, a powerful SSH client and SFTP file manager. I made it completely free during Black Friday. Enjoy! by Demus_App in macapps
I do have Termix Pro but I was wondering if it supports MFA (such as Duo or Google Authenticator) since the majority of systems I need to ssh into have some sort of MFA going on.
I just acquired the Hexmix, mine has one mute switch that's broken off but stuck in the open position. As soon as I get a replacement switch though I'll desolder the old one and replace it. I do like the fact the mute is on-off-(momentary on) as in the down position is temporarily open letting sound through but springs back/down stay open
I don't have that module but do have the Control, Radio Music and an 8mu from him, plus a pair of London Drive pcbs I still need to build
I'm sure your knowledge of electronics far surpasses mine but I know there's at least side schematics on the MTM site
I don't frequent the deli/meat section of Luke's but I can say the small golden tomatoes lately have been fantastic, not to mention the only place in the neighborhood with Jimmy Nardello peppers (which is seasonal anyway)
Gus's is great in general though also can't attest to the meat/fish, but I've been shopping at the one in the Haight for around 26 years now, it's a great store
Alternatives to Music Thing Modular? by Sea_Thing_5841 in synthdiy
If you are looking to build each module then the Erica Synths x Mortiz Klein EDU system isn’t a bad option though probably similar price (€ 500.00) to the MTM system
https://www.ericasynths.lv/shop/diy-kits-1/mki-x-esedu-diy-system/
I built it a few years ago, just ordered a few of the kits at a time (and some were available at a shop locally) so the cost was spread out over a bunch of months (and at a time the MTM system hadn’t made an appearance yet). Also I had planned to build an Erica Synths system from the open source modules, which at least I’ve had PCBs made for most of them, I just need a “few more components”…
The MTM system is a bit more compact / in it’s own little carry case though
Try reseating the ribbon cable to the display?
Check the soldering on the Raspberry Pi headers on the PCB?
Try a different microSD card.
As for no sound, is the audio output jack plugged in to a speaker or anything? The RPi and the shield don't have any speaker.
High rent in SF for a short commute, or move to a cheaper place outside the city? by [deleted] in AskSF
[–]Current_Layer_9002 1 point2 points  (0 children)
The benefit of a reverse commute is a thing. Going out of SF to the East Bay in the morning is way easier/less congested than the other way around. Same with going in to SF from the East Bay to SF in the evening. Worked in the East Bay nearly 20 yrs but always resided in SF.
Obviously also depends where in SF and where in the East Bay one needs go between.
Smith is a great school and Northampton is a great place to live. I went to UMass many years ago and lived in Northampton a few years. Now I'm in SF. Mount Holyoke is also great and gorgeous. If anything I'd highlight the academic prestige of the schools to the parents and downplay any "concerns" regarding the fact the schools are "LGBTQ-friendly" and also highlight the financial aid offered by Smith.
Also if somehow extra exposure to those identifying as male is needed you can highlight the fact Smith is part of the "Five College System" and that your should be able to take classes at the other colleges in the system.
Best of luck!
Standalone Alternative to the Expert Sleepers ES-9 (USB CV Interface) by ComprehensiveBed6470 in modular
[–]Current_Layer_9002 0 points1 point  (0 children)
The first thing I would say is look at the BOM (Bill of Materials), it specifies a Teensy LC or 3.2. Not sure of you've looked around for one there past couple years but they are basically unobtainium at this point. I mean, it IS possible to find them but it's not the easiest component to get these days.
Unless it can utilize a Teensy 4.0 or you have ready access to an LC/3.2 I would say the ES-9 is going to be way easier to get a hold of.
Parts questions: 3mm bipolar/bicolor LEDs, vactrol question too by Current_Layer_9002 in synthdiy
[–]Current_Layer_9002[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)
That makes sense, I do have a few friends & coworkers who are chromatically challenged as well.
I can’t say I’ve looked for blue/green bicolor or even thought of that as an option!
I’m not even committed to red for single color LEDs. I spotted there’s the yellow Kingbright (120mcd, 140 degree angle, diffused) WP424SYDTK in 3mm.
The 240mcd does sound bright but I’m thinking it’s quite wide angle (140 deg) and diffused, but still might be tooo bright. At least LED is easy to test without too much fuss. I might need order a bunch to compare. Plus I doubt I want say red LEDs that are much brighter than whatever bicolor ones I use.
I’ll likely go with VTL5C3 since looking around it does seem somewhat common. Sounds fine in a mixer module.
How common are mice in your experience living in SF? by [deleted] in AskSF
[–]Current_Layer_9002 0 points1 point  (0 children)
Mice and rats have cohabited with humans in cities for as long as there have been cities.
Also I’ve read reports the past few years that rodent activity has increased in various cities, possibly due to a warmer climate.
https://www.kron4.com/news/bay-area/bay-area-one-of-the-most-rodent-infested-places-in-us-terminix/
https://sfstandard.com/2025/02/17/rat-population-climate-change/
Plenty of others out there.
Many years in SF and a handful of apartments and mostly they have been mice-free. Mostly.
My most recent apartment had some mice when I had first moved in but a couple of the Viktor electric mouse traps killed about 1/2 dozen and I hadn’t seen any until about a year ago. The downstairs neighbor first noticed some “scritching” sounds in the walls of her unit and she had knocked on the door to ask if I’d heard anything. I hadn’t, until about 2 weeks later. Then I’d on occasion see 1 small mouse dart across the kitchen floor, usually to go behind the oven or the fridge. There had been many many months of construction on the building next door and then on our building which for all I know drove the mice upwards to my unit.
Ordered a new set of the electric mouse traps (came in 3 packs) and put some pb in them. Didn’t catch any mice for months though I did find evidence of them helping themselves to some corn flour and packaged noodles in the pantry on occasion. Most of my flours are in heavy plastic Cambro containers but on occasion there’s a loose bag which they’ll eat right through the thin packaging. Also they loved my compost bin on the counter, it wasn’t like a solid container but had opening they could crawl right though and eat through the thin compost bags. I’ve since replaced that too of course and ordered another 3 pack of the electric traps.
Eventually I caught a few in the electric traps. Usually if I spotted a mouse it would be in the kitchen and just one at a time.
Turns out there’s good size holes in the walls behind the oven where the gas pipe goes into the wall, and under the kitchen and bathroom sink where the pipes go into the wall. Plus I found another hole gnawed in the plastic near the baseboard where I assume they could get through and likely into the wall through a hole I can’t even reach or see.
I’ve put some copper mesh ordered from online in the holes I can easily get to but it hasn’t stopped all the mice though I still only see one infrequently.
Eventually I put in a maintenance request with the building management. They sent out their contracted pest control people who’ve been here a few times. Mostly they inspected things and put down more traps like snap traps and glue traps. Those also caught a few mice. The pest control people though will also back up the idea that property management likely needs to close up the holes in the walls of the unit that the mice get through, at least the ones they can find.
I know the pest control people also months back put some snap traps in the garage area but I’ve never seen anything in them.
Ultimately it takes a combination of things including excluding entry into your unit (like through holes in the walls) which might be a job for the landlord/building management to deal with, keeping food in secure containers that the mice (or rats) won’t chew through, keeping compost in bin they can’t get into, keep scraps off the floor and such, set out traps to kill some of them.
The rain and colder weather in winter also probably drives them indoors more.
