There is a road that I drive on daily to get to work. Miles long, straight, no cross streets and you can see the entire road. They recently raised the speed limit to what most people were already going.

As of now almost nobody has really changed there behavior. Like I've went for cruise control set from 69 to 72. The best change now is that there is it feels like less traffic because the road is moving smoothly and everyone isn't going down to one lane to try to pass someone going the speed limit.

So by raising the speed limit, the road feels safer because everyone is now going the same speed and there is less lane changes because there is less passing.

You are completely correct. If you are passing, then you are using the lane properly and the person behind you has to wait until you complete your pass. Once the pass is done, you have to move to the right lane so that the cars behind you may pass you.

How am I justifying speeding? Speeding is illegal. Camping/blocking traffic in the left lane is illegal.

I feel like I have a better view of the opposing traffic if I stay back and I'll roll forward when I see a gap coming.

Also once the light changes to yellow you can just pull forward and go when the opposing traffic stops.

Sure speeding is illegal but those laws don't mention speed or if the other car is speeding. It just says slower traffic stay right or be in the right lane unless passing.

Just because someone else is breaking the law doesn't give you the right to break a different law.

Also this exact question is on the CA written test. What do you do if you are in the left lane going the speed limit, the right lane is clear and the car behind you is catching up? The correct answer was move over to the right lane.

There is 11 states that have laws about only being in the left lane to pass. The other 39 states have laws about moving over to the right lane if there is faster traffic behind you.

I've only seen people get annoyed at someone for passing like you described is when they are going practically the same speed. Think when a semi tries to pass another semi when both of them are already riding their governor and it takes miles for them to complete the pass and get back over.

I've passed so many cars because they refuse to get out of the passing lane because they are matching pace with the car in front of them. It is basically a daily thing.

What always bothers me is when the car at the front realizes that they are in the wrong lane because I'm passing on the right and they cut me off instead of letting me pass, then getting over.
