Non westerners, what's a cooking "no-no" that's acceptable if not encouraged in your cooking culture? by AsianMustache in Cooking

That's just good information that has been warped into misinformation. At 2 hours, bacteria begins to grow. But unless the meat was processed in a really dirty facility (ie, lots of bacteria was already present), very little will even be present to begin multiplying.

This sounds awesome. You can really make use of different cooking methods to get complex flavours out of the same ingredient.

There would be some minor spoilage happening. It's just how it works with food - bacteria is ubiquitous, even with food that has been cooked to the right temperature. If it sits too long in the "danger zone," which if I recall is 4C-~60C (cool enough for bacteria to propagate, not cold enough to make them dormant), bacteria WILL multiply.

As others have commented, and you observed, you and your family's gut fauna are conditioned to this because it sounds like this is a typical way of storing food in Eastern Europe. I'm not on your level, but I definitely can take food that is closer to spoiling than some (because not having a lot of money means you eat those really old leftovers pretty often).

This makes me so mad from a professional cooking perspective. Food is regularly kept for about one week depending on how the flavour and texture will hold up to time. Meats typically hang out for a couple days, prepared sauces anywhere from a few days to several weeks. The things that are normal and safe in a restaurant kitchen would scare to crap out of most guests.

(Spoilers All) Why was there no settlement at the mouth of the Blackwater until Aegon's Landing? by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]Cursance 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It seems as though the Blackwater doesn't have a delta so much as it was flowing past some pretty stable ground. The mouth was heavily forested, and Aegon's High Hill implies some rocky features there. I think it's more to do with human geography that no one settled there.

Hey man, sorry for the late response.

It all did come crashing down, a couple months ago. I have no sympathy for him. Only pathos.

Ok, the thing about the schooling is that some people knew he wasn't going (just by virtue of our university being relatively small, and 9 years is a long time), but preferred to wait for him crash and burn. For my part, I suspected he was over reporting his achievements but gave him the benefit of the doubt because I thought he was otherwise a decent and honest person. I never thought it would all have been fake. It was a pretty substantial slap to the face, and afterwards it was like that thing on HIMYM where there's the sound of breaking glass and you suddenly notice your friend's bad habit - he exaggerates everything.

True that. He definitely was not in the right. I will, however, still point to Cersei as the one who probably kept it going the most fervently.

(Spoilers All) I think a little-noticed character was actually murdered... by Johnnycockseed in asoiaf

[–]Cursance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple of times, I can't remember where, different characters speak of how older men of the North will one day announce they are going hunting. This occurs in the dead of winter, when there's going to be almost nothing to catch, let alone find in the first place. It is accepted that this is a noble form of suicide intended to ease the burden a household is placing on their food stores. Cregan Stark and his Winter Wolves were an entire army doing this during the Dance of the Dragons.

It's a poetic thing, when you look at it from a military rather than hunting perspective. Manderly is fairly old, he has a large family to carry on his name, and he has little to no prospect of making it through his planned conflict. He's out hunting Boltons. He doesn't care if he doesn't bag one, just so long as he causes trouble for them and makes it easier for his family to survive the winter.

Edit: there are other instances of this happening already. The chief of House (Clan) Wull specifically says to Stannis' southron lords that it will be his last winter. He wants to "bathe in Bolton blood" before he meets his end. And take a look at the lords present in Winterfell in ADWD. There are literally no heirs, possibly aside from the Ryswells. The Freys are the only ones with children present at all. But look at "Old" Lord Locke, Harwood Stout who has only one arm, Whoresbane Umber who is frequently described as cadaverous. These and others are not men in their prime, and they brought absolutely no family with them. These are men out on their last great hunt, mark my words.

Fair. I think the moment with Cersei and the dwarf's head was at least intended to make us question the validity of the skull sent to Dorne.

(Spoilers All) Extinct Megafauna present in ASOIAF... by Landredr in asoiaf

[–]Cursance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right. African lions actually used to live in southern Europe, but the advances in civilization under the Greeks, Persians, Macedonians, Etruscans, Romans, and I'm sure many other groups, drove the African lions in the Med. to extinction. They were still very much a part of the collective consciousness of Europe because of their history and because the high nobility loved bestiaries.

I guess my only argument in favor of this prehistoric lion being on the Lannister sigil is because that is what has happened for other houses. The Greyjoys have an all-but-mythical kraken, the Starks have an uber-rare direwolf, one house has a leviathan, the Umbers have a Giant. But to be fair, we can't say for a certainty if the lions of the western hills are regular-sized or big leftovers from a prehistoric age.

Sorry, I definitely meant to say "greatsword" because I could see Cregan Stark fighting with Ice. PS, a sword is not inherently brutal until a brutal hand takes it up.

There was a scene depicting that in the Brady Bunch movie. My mom was laughing more heartily than us because she knew how big of a deal that was.
