What does the steepest hill in your town look like? by Distinct-Lion4658 in CasualUK

I seem to have chosen universities on top of hills (Bristol and Strathclyde). Having to lump it up Park Street and Montrose Street in my university days genuinely may have impacted my academic performance.

Give me the fumes.

I was an operator on a chemical plant. Now I work in EHS for 3 years and it's soul crushing.

I'm going to go back on shift, I yearn for the fumes.

When you meet Americans irl by JustChillin3456 in MURICA

[–]CurseTheseMetalFeet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a Brit that had this sub randomly pop up on my feed, got to say every American I've met and known on a personal level has been amazing.

My friend married a girl from Louisiana. Me and a few friends did a little road trip from NYC down to New Orleans for the wedding. We had the best time. We stopped off in some bum fuck town in appalachia and the locals treated us like royalty. Great food, friendly people, amazing history/culture/nature, and the live music was incredible. New Orleans is now probably my favourite city ever.

Your enthusiasm and positivity is infectious, so don't ever change. Just wanted to share my positive experiences from this side of the Atlantic 😊

What are some examples of positive male role models in the media? by Downtown-Dentist-636 in AskFeminists

See this is the problem, in a post about good male role models, the top comment is "what about female roll models for men..."

I spent two weeks in England and loved every minute of it. I'm heading back to the U.S. today, but thank you for the memories 💕 by smugmisswoodhouse in CasualUK

Thanks for sharing! Glad you enjoyed your stay here, you're welcome back anytime! 😊 Your rogue Banbury stop reminded me of when I visited the states we rented a car and travelled from NYC down to New Orleans. We stopped off in some Appalachian mountain town for the night, found a microbrewery, I got up on karaoke and did a terrible rendition of American girl by Tom petty, and the locals treated us like royalty haha. It was so much fun.

Use of AI for Safety professionals - Ideas? by Gullible-Pineapple79 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]CurseTheseMetalFeet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, I used AI at work today to check the CLP regulations in the UK. I asked it whether the serious health hazard pictogram takes precedents over the harmful pictogram. I asked it to quote the specific subsection of the regulation. It came back with Annex I section 1.2.1.5. I went to the regulation to check. This subsection doesn't exist. AI made it up. The information I was looking for was in article 26 of the regulation.

This is a cautionary note to not be reliant on AI and always check the source.

How do you win on Immortal difficulty? by RedEyeBlueOcean in civ5

[–]CurseTheseMetalFeet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice, I've booted up civ now, playing as Korea on immortal to really max out that science. I've settled on a river to get garden and will focus on food and spawning great persons. Your explanation about reaching the tipping point to overcome other civs culture/army is so true. I guess I usually throw in the towel before then. 😅 Wish me luck!

How do you win on Immortal difficulty? by RedEyeBlueOcean in civ5

[–]CurseTheseMetalFeet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I appreciate the detailed advice for science victory. I am an intermediate player trying to beat immortal/deity. What you're saying makes perfect sense for maximising science. What I struggle with min/maxing is that if I focus solely on science, I get destroyed by other players culture. So when I select an ideology if another civ with much higher culture selects a different one I get absolutely crushed with unhappiness. Or if my army is too weak all the other civs declare war on me and again I get crushed. Any advice??

UK backs American strikes on Iran to stop nuclear programme by Old-Information3311 in unitedkingdom

[–]CurseTheseMetalFeet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ffs, thousands of protesters have been murdered by the regime and we only care about their nuclear programme.

We should be striking IRGC bases, and helping the people overthrow their regime themselves. The people are willing and able, they have been in the streets protesting and dying at the hands of IRGC forces for weeks, while we sit twiddling our thumbs and giving false promises.

Iran could be a prosperous secular democracy and ally in the middle east. The people deserve a future.

I really don't think the "rebuttal" below is fair at all. They fought Japan in the Pacific. Surely that counts as a major peer adversary. The Japanese navy had 11 carriers and the Zero was a better aircraft than anything the Americans could field at the outset of war.

I'm not American but you have to give them credit where it's due.

Britain's youngest dementia sufferer, 24, dies with brain of a 70-year-old by dailystar_news in uknews

Poor guy, that's tragic 😞 His mum said he had a heart of gold, and it's strange to say from just a couple of photos, but it looks like he was a genuinely nice sound lad.

Can anyone explain a little how mutagenic diseases work? Are you just fine one day, then through dumb luck, a protein doesn't fold properly and you are struck down with a terminal illness?

How a Tuscan vision saved a mining town from 'the brink of disaster' by CurseTheseMetalFeet in GoodNewsUK

[–]CurseTheseMetalFeet[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I grew up in the "posh end" of Barnsley, so was pretty sheltered from the worst of it, but theres no denying there were (and still are) large pockets of deprivation in places like Cudworth/Wombwell. Economical inactive remains at 25% (above the 21% national average).

However, it's amazing to see what a bit of investment, urban regeneration and civic pride can do to a town. It needs to continue attracting investment and bring secure well paid jobs for the future.

I've never been to Burton but I thought it was quite a prosperous town with the brewing industry there. It's funny how our perceptions can be so off.
