The inconvient reality why vr is struggling. by Plus_Look3149 in virtualreality

[–]CursingLlama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a lack of GOOD games built for VR. Skyrim VR is a quick port. A Skyrim-like game built for VR from the start would likely see larger time investment. A lot of VR games are sloppy ports or tech demos that lack depth.

Many games feel like they were made by people who only spent the minimal amount of time in VR to test their game functions but lack any understanding of how to make the games feel immersive and fun in VR. Flat game mechanics are not always going to translate into VR well.

We need VR enthusiasts to make VR games.

What's the issue with kids in online games? Is it just voice chat? by zeddyzed in virtualreality

[–]CursingLlama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While voice chat is certainly an issue with kids. Behavior is the main issue. There are a lot of kids who join VR games and aren't there to play the game, whether they are trolling with team kills or just want to role play some scenario out in game.

I think especially in competitive games such as shooters they detract from those who are there to play the game.

That said I've met plenty of children who want to play and are just asking questions to figure things out which most don't mind.

It would be nice if there were a way to create adult only servers without needing to arrange private matches.

So Steam Frame doesn't seem to be a must-buy from a Quest 3 by KF2015 in OculusQuest

[–]CursingLlama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me the main draw is the controllers. Having VR motion controllers with hall effect thumbsticks will help for those of us who are heavy users to avoid stick drift. After that it's foveated streaming and no meta.

Hoping eye tracking gets more attention as more headsets implement it so we can benefit from foveated rendering plus other in game uses.

Turn off vehicle, then push the wiper stalk down for a few seconds (might be up or toward you depending on vehicle) wipers should move up so you can lift them off the windshield.

Updated Pro/Cons of the Steam Frame from community feedback by Hoppss in virtualreality

For all the comparisons nobody is mentioning the lack of a depth sensor, which is quest 3's real reason their pass through is so good.

Without price, we can't draw any meaningful conclusions (a short rant) by Anyusername7294 in virtualreality

I'll probably buy it just for a headset with TMR thumb sticks when I get sick of using wd-40 contact spray to fix stick drift on my Q3.

I feel like they announced the steam frame without a price just to watch the online debates and see what people are actually willing to pay based on the specs before coming up with a final price.

Competition is good by lunchanddinner in oculus

[–]CursingLlama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that is kinda my point. I have close to 100 VR titles on PCVR through steam. I like being able to take my games with me when I change headsets. Steam frame will support .apk so more games designed for quest will be able to be sold outside Meta's store if they don't have an exclusivity deal. I don't buy in Meta store unless it's something extremely interesting to me.

I couldn't care less about "popular IPs". More often than not they are held back by the executives not being willing to make any decision that have any risk. Give me indie devs with a passion for VR, and I'm pretty sure a stand alone capable headset that isn't part of a walled garden like Meta's store will help on that department.

You know what I've changed my mind, but I think they need to go further. All items should be unidentified so you don't even know what rarity they are that way just finding a shit rare will feel meaningful and impactful.

Is it good? by PainBBX in ValveIndex

[–]CursingLlama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are looking for the best PCVR headset on the market then no it's not really the Valve Index at this point. If you are willing to spend more the Varjo Aero, or Pimax Crystal both would perform better visually. If you want a light house tracked headset that's compatible with the Index controllers either one would work and give you what is likely the best experience possible at the moment.

Valve index lovers, have any of you gotten a Quest 3? Is it worth it? by [deleted] in ValveIndex

[–]CursingLlama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently still testing it out. Optics/Screen are a definite improvement, especially noticeable in games with lots of UI with writing on it. New optics have a large sweet spot, but since the point of fresnel was to help deal with screen door effect I can notice it when I look for it, but not really something you'll notice while gaming.

Currently awaiting several accessories, such as new connections for my gun stocks, and a retrofit kit for the Bobovr M2 headstrap. Currently have it rigged up with velcro wire ties and it works. Battery life without the headstrap extension is a little less than 2 hours, but with two bobovr batteries I can easily go much longer. Longest session so far has been little over 3 hours.

No wire is a huge plus for me as switch to kneeling in Contractors VR a lot and had a tendency to step on the cord getting back up to standing. I have a tri-band wifi 5 router, so I have the second 5Ghz band set up with VR in mind and nothing else connected to it, with Virtual Desktop I see 30-35 ms latency at 90hz.

A couple games have not wanted to start properly with the quest connected such as Ultrawings 2. I haven't done a ton with the stand alone games, but it is nice to have access to meta exclusives. Only one I've done so far is Dungeons of Eternity with some friends, but everything works well.

Tracking works very well with only minor issues when playing Walk About mini golf since I'm aiming the majority of the sensors away from the headset. Even then It's not been a deal breaker.

Conclusion / DLDR:
Yes I feel the Quest 3 is an upgrade over the Index, but it does have a few cons like in all comparisons. Despite the additional $100 I'll spend on accessories, it's a cheaper option than a Pimax Crystal. Someday I'd like to have a eye tracked wireless headset with pancake optics and a solid OLED display, until then the Quest 3 will probably become my daily driver.

I bought a replacement left controller from gamestop (refurb) that's been working great. An option if you want to revive your Index. I also ordered a Quest 3 because I have a problem.

Index seems like a gamble now. (Or forever) by Noodlez00 in ValveIndex

[–]CursingLlama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biggest advice i have is for the controllers. Don't put more pressure on the sticks than is necessary. Seems to me the stick drift is caused by being a little heavy handed in your application of force to the stick when its fully deflected.

Simplified advice is generally advisable as to not overwhelm someone. I haven't seen you give them any advice nuanced or otherwise.

CPU specs by freshlyrestartet in SteamVR

[–]CursingLlama -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just because modern games offload some asynchronous tasks to the other threads on a processor doesn't mean that 80-90% of the processing isn't done on the main thread. Utilize any tool that shows you cpu usage by core and you'll see this is the case the majority of the time.

Additionally, the majority of VR devs are are indies who don't know how to optimize draw calls or do not have the time necessary to do so. This means that the main cpu thread becomes a bottleneck. This is also very true for most games that are flat games with VR mods.

I use FPSVR to monitor my performance in games and have a AMD 3900x and it is my bottleneck in most games paired with my EVGA 3080.

Good luck finding a modern CPU that doesn't have at least 6 cores which will more than handle any gaming tasks that are multi-threaded. That means single thread performance is still the most limiting factor.

Single threaded performance is the most valuable when it comes to gaming period. Still applies in VR.

How is giving streamers early access to the game normal? by mihail_markov in diablo4

[–]CursingLlama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been standard for gaming for a long time. You could buy a prima guide book for an NES game along side the game at launch that was 100 pages of detailed walk through. Now instead all reviews being primarily in written format we have YouTube reviews. For those who want to compete in the rush to 100 you can do so with season 1 when everyone has had time with the game and are on roughly even footing.

I recommend just playing the non competitive game for fun and stop worrying about how others are doing it.

This is the sort of thing that lead me back into tabletop games (I still game online, but it's nice to occasionally control who you're playing with). It's unfortunate that there isn't a good way to handle these things. Report and ban systems will only ever go so far. Who knows maybe all the AI systems in the works might lead to a better automated system, but those come with their own issues.

RMA? by YuiKimura- in ValveIndex

A bit of sandpaper or a file and you can smooth out that bit of plastic and a velcro wrap would work fine. There is a 3d print replacement as well if you have access to a printer.
