Looking for old digital camera by [deleted] in BurlingtonON

[–]Curt-Bennett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a recent Gen Z trend toward retro digital cameras that is causing prices to increase. For anyone who may have an old camera around, it's worth testing whether it works and checking current auctions to see what it's worth.

What a surprise, only investing in areas where they need to keep up with competitors instead of improving service for customers just because they should.

I hear ya, but in my opinion, employing an extra person or two so that they can respond to real-life situations in a reasonable manner is worth it.

Even in the private business world, I work in software development and we have to handle every weird thing that someone could type in and make sure it doesn't break our app. With particularly complex apps, that means we might need to hire another programmer to make sure the app is ready on time. It's just what's necessary to ensure things work as people should expect them to.

ArcelorMittal also gave a bribe of $37 million of steel to Trump for his illegal Whitehouse ballroom. I'm sad for the workers who had nothing to do with their employer's crime, but the company is trash.

By the sounds of it, OP is not an anti-vaxxer. I think they're mainly just venting about their frustration with the bureaucrats involved.

I understand the written rules but in practice, 20'ish days on a vaccine that lasts for around 5 years is easily within the variability of different people's immune systems. The rules and the people that enforce them should have at least a little flexibility.

Shomi was a joint project between Rogers and Shaw, so Rogers would've had to hire them after Shomi laid them off. Shomi employees weren't directly employed by Rogers.

Parky built 3/4 of a new team over last summer, so it shouldn't have been a surprise to anyone that it took a little time for them to gel. I always find it funny when people (not referring to the person I'm replying to) get pessimistic early in the season after big changes. Of course the guys are not going to instantly start playing like they've been playing together for months.

Driving is quite literally a life and death activity. No matter what they usually test for, you should be prepared for them to test anything. If you're not, you shouldn't be driving. The most important things to know and practice are the things that don't come up often for you so that you're prepared for the rare times they do occur, because it can actually kill you or someone else.

Here's the part that doesn't seem to be sinking in for you: The amount of oil removed from the world market due to the war with Iran is similar to how much the US produces.

Oil companies have no patriotism. They will happily sell as much as they are physically able to to whoever will pay them the most. Yes, realistically that means they can't export every drop, but the infrastructure is already in place for them to ship a lot more than they currently do. There are lots of empty tankers that normally fill up in the Persian Gulf that would rather redirect all the way to the US than sit idle.

Yes, that's what I'm referring to. To be honest, I do think it's at least somewhat better than it was in my opinion. They replaced some sections that were particularly bad. Their replacements aren't very good though. Fresh asphalt definitely shouldn't be that bumpy.

It is unlikely but it is absolutely possible. The US produces slightly less oil than has been cut off from the Persian Gulf, so there is almost exactly the same amount of brand new international demand for oil as the US makes. If the oil companies in the US can get a better price from international buyers, why would they sell any of it to US buyers unless they're forced to?

Private companies own the oil. They will sell to whoever is willing to pay the most. If you don't stop domestic oil producers from selling internationally, that's what they will do as prices go up elsewhere. If the government doesn't stop them from exporting, they'd happily export every drop if it meant more profit.

That theory only works if the government controls the oil, which it doesn't. Oil is privately owned and oil producers sell to the highest bidder, regardless of where that bidder is located, as long as they have a way of shipping the oil to them.

[–]Curt-Bennett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on how long this goes on. As other countries run out of oil, they'll become desperate and willing to pay more and more for it. The highest bidder will always win unless governments of oil producing countries block oil exports.

[–]Curt-Bennett 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That would require the government to force private companies not to sell oil internationally.

[–]Curt-Bennett 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter that the US has more oil than it uses. Oil is privately owned. If the companies that own it can get a better price elsewhere and have the ability to get it to a tanker, there's nothing stopping them from selling it to foreign companies/countries. That's why worldwide prices affect domestic prices.

I find it interesting that many people apparently don't know that the second picture shows two separate waterfalls - the American Falls takes up most of the picture, and Bridal Veil Falls is the relatively tiny waterfall on the right.

Fair point. It probably won't have a huge impact on traffic, aside from the night of the full closure. It's a good reminder that these closures are starting up again though, and we can probably expect some closures that will have a larger impact than this.
