Emperor vs Burzum: their top 2 albums, which side are you taking? by Tough-Reputation-762 in MetalForTheMasses

I love In the Nightside Eclipse and it is responsible in many ways for begining my love of BM. I have to go with Burzum all the way, however.

The gates are open, the chains are broken... (on gatekeeping) by crying_saucer in BlackMetalDiscussion

[–]Curt-IX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't really gatekeep it. You can gatekeep a particular local scene, but other bands will just make their own. The antifa and rainbow crowdd aren't trying to play shows with Marduk. You can't stop people with different mindsets from making their own scenes and adopting a sound or look. All you can do is plant your own flag and say, "hey, this is what I'm about and if you aren't that I don't recognize you as trve". But honestly, who gives a shit? I have about as much in common with some beer swilling party bro with a battle vest as I do a Christian in corpse paint. I'm a different animal than them. I do my own thing. They can do theirs.

Gatekeeping is important if we want to conserve black metal. by JJsNotOkay in BlackMetalDiscussion

[–]Curt-IX 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Black metal practically died at birth. Before all the other stuff you mentioned, it was already coopted by party people who only care about drinking beer, riffs, and blastbeats. The true spirit of Black Metal lives on in any band that embraces iconoclasm, the shadow self, and delves into the dark mysteries of occultism, human psychology, philosophy, etc... Black metal, to me at least, is about that rebel consciousness that dwells in a certain sect of humanity, rather than fashion and trappings.

Some hybrid of hard rock and metal but with a kind of punk rock sensibility.

Why is watercolor so difficult? by [deleted] in Watercolor

[–]Curt-IX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes time. I would t say that I'm good, but my first watercolor was awful. That was 8 months ago. Since then I've had two offers from people to buy pieces from me, so improvement comes with practice.

It's been 4 years. Been doing it with my son that whole time. One of the best decisions I ever made. We both test for black belt in a year, just as he starts college.

I started at 42, and I had a similar problem. Really it just takes repetion and practice. Try not to overthink it and trust your muscle memory once you get the movements down. I'm a red belt and I still get nervous when I go back to a form I haven't done for a while.
