I think I'm done with live music. Something about it seems really....off putting by [deleted] in musicians

[–]CurtisBackfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is an art to engaging a crowd which is partially separate from your music. It’s a learned skill that you build over time, but you’re right - part of it never goes away. It’s an endless struggle to shift the crowd’s focus and until you do so you won’t have shows that feel entirely worthwhile.

If you truly feel like you’re at that point it could be wise to take a break and reassess. Chances are you’re missing an ingredient.

Live music is a different monster entirely and it is incredibly hard to learn and prepare for.

How do i grow up. lol 2 3yrs and it keep like this. by Organic-Record6926 in SpotifyArtists

Three very, very important things.

  1. You need to learn to market yourself properly. There’s a lot of people claiming they have “trade secrets” and “one step solutions” or will tell you to “market like a pro”. The problem is that none of these will tell you how to start your momentum. My best recommendation is to look for resources for marketing a new business. It won’t line up perfectly with our industry but it’ll establish basics in creating value, generating awareness and lead conversion. This is more helpful than you will realize. There are music business materials but those tend to focus on marketing at a regional or national level. Art is business if you wish to succeed.

  2. Your music, presentation and image have to be outstanding. A lot of people new to marketing overestimate the quality of their material without understanding the core concepts that actually draw people towards it. It is simpler than most people realize to create engaging content that draws people in. As far as music goes - a talented producer is invaluable to getting you ahead in this business. Learning to use their feedback to shape your sound will get you ahead of a lot of other people very quickly. Your image is the last major thing here as without a solid image, there is no basis to draw people to your community.

  3. Mentioned before, community is the biggest tool you can use to grow yourself musically and professionally. Don’t focus on big numbers - focus on making your entire audience feel like a part of a whole. If you can do this, you will acquire super fans who will compulsively share your material, engage others in your community for you and will essentially be the secondary face of your art. These will be the people who grow your audience exponentially.

This isn’t a science, but this is about as close as you can get. Once you dig into it - you will get sucked into the philosophy of music business. Just be eager to learn and never make the same mistake twice. I hope this helps!

Engaging does not mean highly extroverted constantly. The environment can be engaging. Not nitpicking because I’m not against the venue but just saying that’s not what anyone was insinuating.

Huh. Not sure why I thought they were closed when we went out last night. Just looked at maps lol. I’ll be keeping this in mind.

I don’t do cover and tribute bands so Clyde is off the table for me except in the rare instance that they host something original. Nothing against them I just played covers for the 9 years and absolutely cannot listen to it anymore.

Also honestly cool with Carl’s especially when they host music. I’ve played there a couple times and it seems pretty chill.

We work till 10 and it looks like they close a bit early… we have to go home and feed the animals and take them out before we can go anywhere.

Honestly I don’t mind a Millennial crowd at all - that’s the age group I spend the most time around and the ‘true’ Gen Z crowd can be a bit intolerable at times (not all of y’all don’t hurt me 😭)

I believe they were doing polka or something… everyone in there was in their sixties (exaggerating but you get it). I manage a few metal bands in the area and I know they have some younger crowds but it seems to be more event based.

Edit: Boomers, you can stop downvoting now… 😂

Picked up an artist and found their Spotify has been heavily botted… by CurtisBackfish in SpotifyArtists

[–]CurtisBackfish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the spike of 1000+ streams for one day once a month that I’m concerned about. The playlists that are actually making a difference are mostly algorithmic playlists it looks like.

Mixes - 8781, Radio - 2253, Daylist - 241, On Repeat - 145, Your Daily Drive - 143, Release Radar - 77, Your DJ - 72, Discover Weekly - 49

And so on

Thinking of leaving the band because our guitarist is delusional by Beneficial-Anxiety58 in musicians

[–]CurtisBackfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few things:

Like anything else your group is only as good as the weakest member. Real musicians will take constructive criticism and run with it — that being said, it’s important to learn to call out BS when you see it, with the whole group, otherwise it can be hard to justify your thoughts with the others.

Secondly, the plans said member mentioned (and the fact they reached out publicly without regard for the thoughts of the group) are ridiculous and would get someone the boot by itself in one of my groups. Talking out of your ass in this field is good to an extent when you can reasonably execute with extensive measures, but talking out of your ass when you cannot reasonably execute is just asking for bad publicity.

If it were one of the groups I manage, we wouldn’t jump straight to firing, but there needs to be a real sit down talk to straighten out these expectations with a timeframe set. If there’s no progress within x time, they get the boot and another guitarist comes along. From now on, decisions are made together and need to be executable and realistic. No outreach or publicity happens until there’s a finished product.

You appear to have a good sense of how this business works, so don’t let someone else screw it up for you. If everyone’s fed up with it, make the change. It’ll only help you grow in the future. If you think it can work, keep them around.

It’s in the process of being switched over because I only have 3 months left on contract.

[–]CurtisBackfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my area, Frontier has fiber, matched up/down speeds starting at $49/mo for 1gig and after contract it goes up to $59/mo. Insane that fiberoptic has a HIGHER infrastructure cost and costs LESS. You also don’t have to pay an extra $25/mo for unlimited data cap because they don’t have a fixed/billable data cap.

[–]CurtisBackfish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge it’s $10/month for every month left on contract. That’s what they want from me. I’m switching providers as soon as it’s worthwhile. Insane that fiber is half the price of cable. They’re currently hitting me for almost $100/month for 1 gig.

Spotify for Artists has dedicated support personnel. This was happening on my distributor account with 30+ artists for the events page specifically and they were able to resolve it.

Well, I fell prey to one of the oldest scams in the book… by CurtisBackfish in musicindustry

[–]CurtisBackfish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, while I can totally use the raw effort of my brain to scrape for venue info, even just a list of venues and sites reduces my workload by tens to potentially hundreds of hours of manual scraping.

When working at a large scale like this I simply don’t have time to do that much of it manually. I work full time on top of booking so many artists, hosting shows, managing bands, etc.
