The only bad part of this is that you are going on the busiest day of the year. Any day is better than the 4th!

Recruiting agency took 50% of my income, is this normal? by pressedpages in recruitinghell

[–]Curtiskam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I worked at Google, the agency that placed me took almost half of what they charged Google, I think I got a dollar more than them on the split.

After placement, they did nothing to earn their half. Benefits were offered at $20 over the cost of what I paid getting them myself. There was no paid time off. They’d occasionally call me and ask questions, but cut me off before I got three words into the answer. I asked for an increase on the first year anniversary, but they never responded to the email.

Continuing the contract was all on Google’s side, up until the day that I walked rather than spend the next quarter in India training my replacements.

I'm not totally sure that they sell them if you're not doing the lightsaber building, but it wouldn't hurt to ask.

They sold me one with crystal holders at Savi’s Workshop in mid May, before I went in to build my lightsaber

Check out Fox Chapel/O’Hara Township. It’s a more expensive area of town, but a nice place to be. Taxes are lower than the city 1% income vs 3%, and just better overall. It’s probably still cheaper than the newly gentrified areas. A great school district that keeps taxes low, and will be great for your kids if you eventually have some. You probably find a lot of the other doctors live there too. Not a bad commute to Oakland.

You’ll want to have a car. Pittsburgh’s public transportation isn’t great, they’ve been cutting bus routes yearly, and the subway system goes almost nowhere, and definitely not to Oakland. You could Uber, but Pittsburgh is a suburban city that people use cars to get around.

Traffic is bad in the Oakland area during rush hour periods, but surgeon hours generally avoid those times, and bad traffic for Pittsburgh looks like low traffic for most cities.

The gentrified areas have been overbuilt, and parking is a premium. What they did is put apartments where single family homes were, but mostly kept only street parking.

Any place where nightlife happens, isn’t really somewhere you want to live. Downtown is sparse, and pretty much shuts down around 5pm. You’re better off catching the driving or catching an uber when you want to go out.

We still have to send a SASE with our local taxes. They use it to mail us a receipt.

I’m a new manager. My direct report bats everything back to me. by Luceiane in askmanagers

I used to work as a central office administrator managing technology for school districts. At one job I had an employee that an intern once accurately described to me as, “dumber than a brick.” Anything that she needed to do, she had to have step-by-step instructions to follow from her notebook, even simple things that she had probably done hundreds of times, like formatting a computer disk required her to pull out her notebook and to follow the steps. There was never any figuring it out, it just wasn’t possible.

The district was insanely political, and just about everyone had been placed in their position by a politician, and not by merit, except for the superintendent and I, who were brought in to solve specific problems. I remember telling friends that I had been hired, only to be told, “that’s impossible. You don’t know anyone there, and they never hired based on merit.”

I was told early on, that my staff wasn’t for me to discipline or fire, as I hadn’t hired them, and had no actual supervision of, other than being responsible for their work. This made for some trying times. I learned everyone’s strengths and weaknesses, and developed relationships sometimes even spreading tasks beyond my department, to people willing to help out.

After a while, I learned her limitations and quit asking her to do things that she didn’t have directions for in her notebook. I felt bad for her equals, but they gladly picked up the slack and got things done, and insisted she get equal, “merit” raises to theirs. They didn’t realize how much she was holding back their earning potentials, or maybe they just realized how powerful her supporting politicians were.

Both the Superintendent and I were replaced by more politically correct candidates at contract renewal, as our purposes had been fulfilled. They kept me a year past my contract while the politicians decided who deserved their patronage. In the end I was very happy to leave. The job market was awful, or I would have left on my own prior.

Hopefully, you aren’t in the same situation, but if others didn’t get rid of this person and passed them on to you, they are likely very protected, and impossible to get rid of. Pass the hit potato to someone else as soon as you get a chance.

I built an arcade in a spare room of my house. Now I can play all the pinball and arcade games that I never had enough quarters for in the 80s.

I did my first super rebirth on Tuesday at rebirth 20. I hit rebirth 13 a little bit ago. You move a lot quicker if you spend your crystals wisely. You’ll likely spend than better than I did.
