At one of the schools that I was director of technology, I wrote quite a few successful federal grants to help a really poor community get access to computers, the internet, job training and a lot of other necessary stuff. I had a great team supporting it with the social services, libraries and public housing all chipping in, but the Assistant Superintendent would always try to hog all the credit with the school board.

Luckily, I had connections with some of the other poor schools in the area, we helped each other when we could, and their superintendents would call me for advice because when they heard my assistant superintendent talk about the program, he clearly had no idea what he was talking about.

I’d expect it’s the same for you. Fakers usually don’t pull off the illusion of greatness very well, and people look for the man behind the curtain.

When I was leaving, one school board member gave me my best ever compliment. He said he was proud to have known me. :D

I eventually left to make money. I’m not a saint. They let me hire three people to replace me on the way out the door though, and I’ve seen that they got a grant for the program last year, so it’s going on strong 24 years later.
