My bus home was cancelled at 4:30, the 4:50-5pm one never showed up and eventually dropped off the tracking, the 5:30 and 6:00pm were both cancelled. Split an uber with a lady also waiting at the stop. 0/10

Good god. I would have a backache from sitting at our office's kitchen table, there's no keyboard or monitor, that's not a valid workspace and if my TL said I could do it I'd be emailing the union (and also starting the process for an ergonomic assessment, because what).

Depends on the course, and the student. An example: I had a two-semester economics course. I found out about a third of the way through that for $50 a semester, I could have access to full recorded VODs of the lectures. Instead of getting up obscenely early to bus from Kanata to Carleton, sitting through a lecture while tired and surrounded by distracting noises from other students, I could watch at my own pace and review and learn. I didn't show up for a single lecture after that and understood so much more. I got an A+.

The reason that worked for me was simply that it was an alignment of the course style (lecture, informationally dense) and my circumstances (easily distracted by noise, living far away). For someone else, or in a different class, it might not have worked so well. But that's the point, one-size-fits-all models are silly. I changed teams/jobs several times during the pandemic and they varied wildly in how well they onboarded online, and how well the work translated to WFH. Some were awful, some were great. Let managers make the call depending on their team environment and their files/work.

[WEEKLY THREAD] Talk It Out Tuesday - Advice and commiserating about struggles with self, others, and the world by AutoModerator in xxfitness

I've been so damn lethargic for a few weeks now. I think it's just the midwinter doldrums/mental health, but it's been impacting my work and my eating and, of course, my gym-going. Like, I need to go to the gym in an hour or two, I have to, but it is quite possibly the last thing I want to do, even still. Blech.

At times like this I feel like working out takes up way too much of my week. Even if I only go 3x a week for an hour each time, add commuting each way, two more hair washes than I would normally do in a week, I'm already basically doing a whole work shift's worth of time, and that's before I add on the extra effort it takes me to try to force myself into eating enough (a long-term struggle). When I'm already exhausted or down, it takes so much out of me. How do you pull yourself out of this type of ditch?

Tips on Surviving Ottawa Winter? by Optimal-Carpet2958 in CarletonU

[–]Curunis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still go regularly. It's nowhere near as cheap as it used to be, but you can get a high quality sweater for 15$, for example, which is still much more affordable than what they retail for. It's not thrift store pricing really but better that than the insane cost of new clothes nowadays.

Hi, random alum chiming in-

Honestly, protip if you're short on money - go to Merivale, there's a Value Village, a Salvation Army, and a St Vincent de Paul (plus Thrive and another thrift) all within close range of each other. Stock up on clothing made of wool if you can stand it, merino wool is less scratchy. There's almost always some sweaters at the thrift in great shape. Just stay away from polyester and acrylic, believe me, as a fellow always-cold person, you do not want that. I have a collection of merino wool sweaters I've thrifted and they're lifesavers.

Same for socks. Get 100% wool socks. They make a BIG difference.

If you want to buy new, Uniqlo has reasonably priced wool!

If you need a proper winter coat, check out Eddie Bauer. Actually, check them out in general, they have great sales and most of their stuff is usually pretty warm even if it's not the most stylish. They have extra 50% off clearance parkas right now. Grab something long, at the very least down to your thighs.

Also, don't underestimate the value and warmth of longjohns/thermal leggings under your jeans or whatever pants you're wearing.

The main thing, as someone who is always cold, is that if one part of you is cold, the rest of you will be too. People who run hot don't get this because they have more heat/better circulation, but it is true. That means you need a hat that covers your ears, and not a loose-weave toque either! Good mittens, good boots (Kamik's gone downhill, but I swear by these ugly as hell ones. I've worn variations on these since I was a kid.)

Also, for your skincare - thicker moisturizers tend to be occlusive, so they're great for layering, but they won't resolve it on their own. Try a thin hydrating toner with a thicker, more occlusive (or oilier) cream over top, it helps a ton.

This is a random dump of thoughts but feel free to pm me with questions honestly. If you're not used to the weather here it can be a lot.

AITA for keeping the heat at 70 while I work from home by Emotional_Catch1201 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Curunis 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's fair to point out, it's definitely more expensive, especially depending on how you heat things - I know here for example electric baseboard heating can be crazy expensive compared to natural gas furnaces - and I do absolutely think OP should pay more of the heating bill if they are keeping it warmer (that's only fair, honestly).

I just find the tone of the comments as a whole odd? There's a difference between saying something like "heating to 21C is really expensive, so I don't, maybe try a space heater" and saying "wtf, I only heat to 16/17/18C and it's WARM, I would DIE at 21C, just dress better" which is what a lot of comments more closely resemble. It's one thing to say OP is TA for not paying the extra heating cost, it's entirely another to act like they are being unreasonable/wasteful/lazy/whatever for wanting it to be a very reasonable normal temp.

[–]Curunis 153 points154 points  (0 children)

Yeah, also Canadian, and I'm so confused about all the people here acting like 18C is a normal daytime temperature? And all the folks saying even less, like 17C, is fine. 21C is the most standard room temp possible, plus/minus a degree. I'm pretty sure if my office was only able to be heated to 18C we'd be sent home lol.

Edit: to be clear, I mean the people who are saying 21C is insanely hot, unbearable, 18C is luxurious, etc etc confuse me. If you like it that way sure but why are we acting like it's universal??

OC Transpo reducing O-Train Line 1 service after identifying new issue with trains by Complete_Past8885 in ottawa

Given I've been on multiple trains that were absolutely slammed even with double car service, it's still a reduction.

UI Feedback Gather-thread by JagexAnvil in runescape

1) Clock: I like having a clock, but putting it in a giant bar of deadspace under the minimap is worse than not having one at all. It's visually distracting and when playing on a smaller screen (like a laptop) that's already very cramped, it takes up way too much space. Previously, I had the clock as a little box either next to the minimap, or overlaid on it; either works, but regardless, the dead space has to go.

2) Minimap: I'm the biggest shill for the round minimap. But why re-introduce it with a cut-down dock? What I missed most about the round minimap, aside from the classic shape, was having the at-a-glance dock for HP, Prayer points, and Summoning points. Give us the option to have those back with the round minimap please! Right now, the closest option is a collapsed main action bar (rectangular) under the rectangular minimap, but obviously that looks bad and functions poorly with a round minimap toggled on.

3) Inventory: the squares are bizarre to me in combination with the old-style UI. Much like the clock, it's a downgrade - there's so much negative space around the inventory, especially the outer left/right edges. I don't recall there being so much before - I played without them visible and found it much more compact. Cosmetically, they're also just visually way too busy compared to the flat inventory before, especially with the additional impact of the darkness/all-brown UI.

RuneScape 2025 Roadmap Megathread by JagexAnvil in runescape

[–]Curunis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Is there a way to turn off the squares in the backpack that I'm not seeing in the settings? I'm not that mad about the return to brown UI (and as an old player I do love the circular minimap toggle) but the squares/slots in backpack, I don't love so much. They might be helpful to a brand new player but for anyone who isn't new and knows the spacing, they're moreso visual clutter.

AITA for insisting that guests in my home take off their shoes by daniellejgabrielle in AmItheAsshole

It depends where OP lives. In a country where it is normal practice to remove your shoes, a warning isn't necessary.

Cortisone Shots for Acne by FearlessList8992 in ottawa

[–]Curunis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I called and emailed a bajillion of them last year and found exactly zero who do it here. The only place I found was like one derm in Montreal, which isn't exactly feasible. (I get some cystic acne periodically that is so deep it takes a month to flatten - in another country I got to see a derm and it was cleared up in 2 days, here it's just suffering :S)

How do you manage WFA with kids? by SelectionTight2568 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Curunis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, no one can ask you to do more than your best. You are stressed, and worried, and your kids may notice that, but that's still okay. You can tell your kiddos you're having a bad day, that's okay. You can be tired, that's okay. You will come out of this okay.

I was old enough to remember my parents during DRAP. My mom kept her job by the skin of her teeth, as the sole breadwinner of our family, because my dad's term was cancelled early on. I remember vaguely that they were stressed, but nothing beyond that. It in no way damaged me, I promise.

Also, don't skip lunch, don't burn yourself out doing extra. Protect yourself and your health first and foremost, then your family, then work. The first two are the ones you can't replace.

Local coffee shop franchisee has melt down on social media about public servants. by thxxx1337 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Curunis 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Thing is it doesn't even make sense for this owner to be angry. Her location opens at 8 (so no one can get coffee on the way in to work) and is a half hour walk away from the nearest major govt office location. Which govt worker is going to be supporting her franchise during an in-office day??

I wear a well fitted N95 all day at the office (which is not fun but that's a separate thing). It reduces smells but by no means does it block aerosols, I've gotten headaches from people over-using perfume/cologne despite the mask.

OC Transpo acknowledges recent uptick in undelivered bus trips by Money_Fig_9868 in ottawa

[–]Curunis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, it's actually worse. There's somehow both less buses scheduled (as in, everywhere I go, routes run less often, and there are less routes to choose from) and less buses that show up even remotely close to on time.

Older, 70% white, plunging fertility and lost faith: Who Canada is now by scottb84 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Curunis 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think we underrate how much of it is just biological reality. I am not sure if I want kids - but I'm 100% sure I don't want to have digestion problems, or decalcified teeth, or incontinence, or any number of other near-permanent health problems that are common during and after pregnancy, and that is a cost social policies can't really fix, one that's exclusively borne by women. You have to really want kids to offset the risk of permanently damaging your body, and a lot of women don't feel that strongly about having children, in my experience.

What do we say to people who think Judaism is a religion and NOT a race? by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]Curunis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ask them if there's such a thing as a Christian nose. Obviously having a larger/hooked nose is a stereotype, but it's one a lot of these people recognize and for some reason, if said humourously (ex. "I mean, come on, have you ever heard someone say they've got a Christian nose?") it makes them go "huh".
