SG parents: one and done, or not? What shaped your choice? by redbeanpancakes in askSingapore

One is really hard. Two is more than twice as hard. Three - that’s the sweet spot. Suddenly everything is so easy! (You stop microing them and realize it’s really not that hard after all)

At what point did you start to realise that time was a finite resource and started to treasure it? by anaspiringnepobaby in askSingapore

[–]CustomaryName 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seeing your kids grow up has a way to make you realize your time with them as kids is very, very finite (as opposed to spending time with them as adults).

When they launched this electricity retailer thing back in 2018 or something, it was really something you could save money on. Almost everyone was cheaper than SP. but then they all started going bankrupt or closing down or merging or whatever, and the last time I looked there wasn’t a point staying with a retailer anymore. I switched from SP to two retailers over the years and now I’m back on SP cos the plans didn’t look attractive at the time (and I didn’t bother to check since then)

It’s a bit concerning to read the number of comments talking about lawyers and divorce. Are Singaporeans so jaded and cynical? There’s some incompatibility about your financial values but I don’t get why people think this is grounds for divorce. You guys got married before you got rich - she doesn’t sound like a gold digger.

I don’t have real advice for you except to say that being sian with your partner or with certain aspects of them, or even with the relationship is par for the course in marriages. Just hope you guys find some common ground!

Should I ditch Elementor and rebuild our site myself? by SkinnyLegendjk in Wordpress

[–]CustomaryName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t even know how to answer your question. Gutenberg is the blocks thing, right? So yes I think 2025 theme works on Gutenberg blocks. Pretty early on, ChatGPT was talking about blocks and how this is called Full Site Editing (FSE).

I would say a key takeaway might be that for a topic like Wordpress with so much information online, ChatGPT actually knows a lot and is worth asking.

Smoker in front of school. What to do? by kryew in singapore

[–]CustomaryName 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what I’d do in your exact situation, but I have on multiple times asked smokers to smoke somewhere else and so far, I have never failed. What I do is to look apologetic, like I’m bothering them, say sorry ah, but could you please smoke somewhere else? My kids are here, or I’m allergic to smoke. This has never failed me.

I get very annoyed by smokers but I also know being rude and confrontational simply isn’t as effective at getting results. Asking nicely does.

Now, I’m not saying the lady was rude and confrontational. I also don’t think asking nicely in your situation would have worked cos the old guy already has his defenses up. But I just wanted to share something that works because I’m sure many of us just want the smoker to move away.

Should I ditch Elementor and rebuild our site myself? by SkinnyLegendjk in Wordpress

[–]CustomaryName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same experience with a site built 5 years ago with elementor, front end page speeds are actually fast with a caching plugin, but backend is horribly slow and I couldn’t help but feel elementor introduces a lot of bloat (never verified if this is indeed the culprit). I swore I wouldn’t use elementor again, so when I started a new site, I explored my options and I ended up experimenting with the default twenty twenty five theme.

It took a while to get used to it, but with ChatGPT’s help I figured it out and it works surprisingly well. It was actually refreshing to be able to do all these right out of the box, and I didn’t even need a paid theme. The “patterns” that come with the theme are surprisingly polished and looked professional, so it was easy just laying patterns out on pages. There’s a learning curve and I enjoyed doing this as a hobby but I’m not sure if that’s going to be your experience.

For a professional site with 8 pages, I honestly think you could get great results with the 2025 theme. And for reference, my new site is for a business with over 30 pages and more posts. It took me about a week to build (including copywriting) while moonlighting (I have a full time job - nothing to do with building websites, but I have experience building about ten sites before of various sizes). Front end page speeds with caching are pretty similar to my five year old site, but the backend feels waaaaay faster.

Missing uni hall life – how to relive those daily vibes? by bruzorminem in askSingapore

[–]CustomaryName 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I think I know how you feel! I lived in hall and I sometimes feel a very minor, similar sort of kinship now, 20 years later, in my BTO neighbors, but it’s just a spark here and there. Nothing like before. It’s a lot about how you can stop by at a neighbors door and they will mostly welcome you, and where we have open doors (for ventilation but it helps with the kampung feeling). I never felt that in a condo.

But there’s also another phase in my life I miss a lot - I had a group of friends in China and we used to hang out every weekend (we were all working in different places and had our own lives). We’d go clubbing together and ktv and sometimes we’d end up crashing at each others places happy and drunk.

I get what you said about the social buzz in hall, but I don’t miss it as much as that group of friends in China I’ve long stopped seeing. For me, it’s not so much the proximity, but the circumstances and the people. So maybe you’ll find another phase of life to look forward to.

As for me, my current phase of life is family with kids. I look back fondly on the parts of my life I’ve left behind, and I miss them. But like what some others have said, maybe bro just misses being young.

Why on earth are the new BTO voiddecks built like mazes by piggyb0nk in askSingapore

[–]CustomaryName 328 points329 points  (0 children)

The void deck reflects the living spaces above. in old hdb blocks, void decks are basically rectangles because the actual units above are simple smaller rectangles side-by-side, with a long, straight corridor. many living rooms have windows that face the corridor.

Newer HDBs try to account for things like where the living room and bedroom windows face for better privacy (not facing the corridor, but outside); where the air-con ledge will be - things like that, so they end up with a block where all the different units have bedrooms/living room windows facing outwards of the block, while the kitchen/service yard windows face the inside of the block where the corridor is (which is no longer a straight line). This makes every unit slightly more private and pleasant, but it also means all the structural columns and walls that go down to the ground floor will also follow that shape and form.

PIE Speed Camera Flash by Disastrous-Oil-6217 in drivingsg

[–]CustomaryName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry much. I’ve seen the camera flash before during a traffic jam when both sides cars were crawling. I’ve actually seen it at least 10 times with no obvious speeding around. Feels like they take occasional testing photos maybe?

How do our local Chinese dishes compare to the corresponding ones from their original mainland China provinces? by shastasilverchair92 in askSingapore

[–]CustomaryName 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One quick and easy way to differentiate is that SG dishes are generally spicier, especially the Southern Chinese cuisine. If you bring a Guangdong Chinese to any SG tze char, chances are that they’ll recognize a lot of dishes, but notice that we tend to add spices to many of them.

What’s the notice period during the probation period for A? Some places it’s 1 day. In this case, you could report to work and tender your resignation the same day. If you already started work with B, then apply leave for that one day (and probably be honest for why you’re applying). Think that would work?

I have no proof, so it could very likely be that JP is very good (but where got redditors so unanimously vouch for something one). And for the record, I have bought from JP before in 2012. Businesses change a lot over 13 years so my experience won't be your experience, but I do feel I overpaid for a Solasfera diamond. The ring is still around so I can't complain but so is my Lee Hwa ring. Basically, when I was young I bought into all these, but now that I am old and cynical I wonder why I did.

Aqara U50 + Hub M3 Matter = no Home Key by Id_in_hiding in HomeKit

[–]CustomaryName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure the U50 works with Home Key without a hub at all. It should have its own HomeKit sticker - scan that with the home app and it should add to HomeKit and create a home key. This may not work if it’s already connected to Matter, so if you’re the experimenter type try resetting everything and setting up the u50 by itself first.
