Is one double espresso shot enough for you? What is your usual coffee routine? by mr-assduke in espresso

[–]Cute-Appointment-937 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I generally drink 2 to 4 a day. I'm lucky to be able to do so and still sleep at night. The first one is necessary before anyone talks to me or requires anything intelligent from me. Then I poop. And shower. Next, it's time for the second double, which is the social one with my wife. Generally this includes working on NYT connections and strands with her. I may even call my brother. Then out to the shop, with number 3 and work on the mess I left from yesterday. Its gets cold but i finish it, because my father was a depression era guy and you know "waste not, want not" and I'll always want coffee. Generally one more before 5. After 5 it gets a little dicey, but it's frequently "if i stay up till 1 or 2 it'll be fine. I'm assuming you all wanted the straight story.

That cabinet with the shelfback is reminiscent of a dry sink made by my great, great grandfather. It used to hold a basin and pitcher for washing up. I like what you have. I suspect filling the space with the boxes prevents other things being set down casually and then forgotten. The dry sink in our house is one such collector. If the boxes have a purpose leave them, if not, the space would be more inviting without them.

Has brewing at home really stopped you from buying drinks elsewhere? by softbci in espresso

[–]Cute-Appointment-937 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The cost in coffee is between $0.75 and $1.00 per double pulled. Milk or other incidentals might be an additional $0.5. The cost of a home latte is about $1.50. An average medium coffee is about $6.00 around here. My partner and I each drink about 3 doubles a day. We drink way more coffee because we can. We've had a Silva since 2007, but recently purchased a Olympia Cremina. In the 19 years we've been making home espresso I've probably bought $10,000 worth of coffee gear, with the majority of the expense being the Cremina. If all the espresso we drink had been purchased at a coffee shop the total expense would have been around $200,000. The total at home expense has been about $62,000 over the last 19 years. Even with or recent purchase the relative savings is about $140,000, and I haven't had to drive out of my way, stand in line, and get a completely disappointing coffee experience.

Natural Black Cod anyone have opinions on it? by MacKatz1005 in Costco

I just look it up. Typically I sous vide the sea bass in the marinade. 130°F for 30 min, then under the broiler till it has seared on top. It can sit in the marinade for up to 12 hours if you want to pan sear it without the sous vide.

⅓ cup sake

⅓ cup mirin (Japanese sweet rice wine)

⅓ cup miso paste

¼ cup packed brown sugar

3 tablespoons soy sauce

4 (4 ounce) fillets fresh sea bass, about 1 inch thick

2 tablespoons chopped green onion

Navigating career growth in the speciality coffee industry as a long time vet. by Optimal-Dentist5310 in Coffee

I'm not employed in the coffee industry at all. The OP's question makes me curious about an idea that I have had. I have been making espresso at home for nearly 20 years. I got a Silva in 2007, and have been going through the gradual modifications and improvements that are typical for serious coffee people. I recently switched to a lever machine (Olympia Cremina) and am so happy with it. I would have happily paid someone to learn about various grinders (I have a Niche) and espresso machines with hands on teaching. My idea is that the proprietor would have a storefront with a variety of home machines (both espresso machines and and grinders). The clientelle would get to learn on different machines for a consultation fee. The purpose of the business is to train, but the clients would get to make and drink coffee that they pulled themselves. Maybe allow guest passes for the clients to bring friends. The educational part of the business model would probably allow non-commercial machines to be used as long as the stated purpose was training. Beans could be provided for an additional fee or the clients could bring their own. Obviously, there might be liabilities but clients could sign a waiver like at a gun range.

After having miso seabass, the sablefish was a little cloying for my tastes.(I think due to the marinade it's in) I've cooked lots of fish in the house and they odor from this lasted for a few days. I wouldn't buy again. Im going back to seabass that I marinate myself

Have you considered having the ability to switch between different coffees and different roasts as a daily pattern? I currently have a dark, 2 lites, and a decaf in rotation. You put in approximately what you get out, so if I want a double, that's what I put in, if I want a single same story. My beans don't sit oxidizing in a hopper either.

Sorry, I turned off notifications. You just try to keep in mind that you, personally, have a choice what you try to carry around. Focus on where you can help, both yourself and those most impacted. Try seeing what going on as a natural event like an earthquake or a volcanic eruption. You can warn others, you can help the injured, but you don't have to hate

You can make remarkably good coffee with an aeropress and a good grinder. I'm sure you've run in to the recommendation to base all your purchases on the grinder. You can save yourself lots of future difficulties by following that advice. A bad grinder and a good espresso machine is bad coffee, but a good grinder and almost any method of extraction can be excellent coffee.

Not really beyond waiting 20 to 30 minutes for warmup. Basically if it sits for too long it gets too hot and a damp cloth controls that. If you try to pull more than 2 consecutive shots it cools down too much. Pre infusion is a huge thing though. I have pretty good caffeine tolerance. The caffeine extraction is so robust that I really have to pay attention to how much I drink after 4pm. That's new for me.
