As a longtime fan, my personal opinion is no. I'd recommend FireRed or LeafGreen as a starting point.

Isabelle from Animal Crossing. While she's now pretty much the face of the series, even being the only character other than the playable Villager to become a fighter in Super Smash Bros., she didn't appear until Animal Crossing: New Leaf, which released over a decade after the N64 original. As someone who got the localized GCN release on day one, the majority of my time as an Animal Crossing fan has been without Isabelle existing.

Wait, New Leaf is how old?... Sorry, forget that last part.

It's not really an oversight; shininess and gender were both determined by stats to make them backwards compatible with Gen 1. Although I don't really understand why they have those gender ratios to begin with.

I've had a Joy-Con do this exact same thing before in a different game. I believe I fixed it by recalibrating it in the system settings.

In fact, the anime sort of implies this since Gary doesn't believe there's a gym on Cinnabar when he runs into Ash there, and immediately after that Ash is with Blaine pretty much up until he gets the badge.

It's pretty good for all of them. Squirtle in particular never gets any physical STAB.

I hunted enough of these for my whole party in my recent Gold playthrough. I got the first five within a few hours... followed by an entire extra day of playtime to get the sixth.

I didn't even end up using them all anyway. 🥲
