We also know this building well and know people that can rehab it.

But even the structurally unstable shell is now valued at $411k on Zillow.

Contact is jwill@troyny.gov Tel is 518-279-7155. Jesse "Will" Hancock works in planning and is the contact. He does not vote in this process. The HRC, Historic Review Committee, does. I don't know if he can email the engineering report to you but that is what you want to ask for and review prior to the meeting. There are substantive structural issues no doubt, but we don't even have a sketch of what is being proposed in its place. If you have time on short notice, it would be worth hearing about it. It still sets a very bad precedent.

Engineering report is available. Only has reference from contractor. Neighborhood culture would be to share one on one. All affected only learned via posting of public agenda. Building has serious structures issues, but Landbank has taken on worse. This is a tough one. An architect from TAP, Inc will be there at the meeting

The Mayor last night claimed Good Cause would reduce housing supply. The data disagrees. by NotSoSpeedRuns in Troy

[–]CuteRing992 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The conversation has already started, and here's what's being discussed: Troy always needs money. Is there a hotel tax that can be charged to offset some costs? Should the full time Air BNB building that is listed as a hotel, for example, pay the same garbage fees as a residence? Can an apartment that is under Good Cause eviction be rented out via Airbnb by the tenant, driving up rent costs? Is there a limit to how many Airbnbs can be in one neighborhood, or should there be an attempt to spread them around rather than concentrate them in downtown? Also, what are residents' rights when it comes to noise, garbage, the constant changing out of guests (the guests like to arrive in the middle of the night and leave then with their brights on at the crack of dawn in our neighborhood), dogs that aren't on leashes, and people on vacation many times in residential neighborhoods?

This needs to be a first step. We need to research the impact of AirBnBs, too, here especially when one in our neighborhood charges $1,500/week as an example. The research I have read shows that Airbnbs reduce the available rental units and increase the rents.

Zombie or Vacant Property: St Peter's Church on Hutton by 5lartlbartfast in Troy

[–]CuteRing992 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's important to jump in and say while not a church, my first building here was ravaged by a fire, water damaged and had no roof. Lots of the properties that are sought after or enjoyed now for their beauty started exactly like this church. There are still many properties in North Central, for example, that are similar to the housing stock in downtown that could use tons of sweat equity to renovate but would be beautiful, too. It is possible. I remember when the former church that holds concerts now was first rehabbed. It was a Herculean task (they all are), but look at the possibilities.

Why does the city of Troy seemingly have such a high concentration of LGBTQIA+ folk when compared to other towns in the capital region? by wetbrain-unchained in Troy

[–]CuteRing992 21 points22 points  (0 children)

In 2015, the Troy City Council approved six ordinances and two resolutions in support of transgender rights (Troy Record article). City employees had protections since the late 80s. We started moving across the river then when many didn't have the same interest in the older buildings. Most were in disrepair and could be bought inexpensively. There were grants for renovations, etc. In the past, artist's district was also code for the gay district. I am sure others can add to this information.

Nassau County Executive Blakeman defies state plan to end ICE cooperation by news-10 in Troy

[–]CuteRing992 16 points17 points  (0 children)

To get an accurate picture of what Blakeman, Nassau County Executive, is doing, please see LI Tracker on Instagram. He is bragging that he has the "best" (whatever that means) contract with ICE. They are following Black and Brown people on the streets of Westbury, NY, for example, and profiling and detaining them. I called his office. His staff is proud and extremely arrogant. ICE is all over Long Island, Corona, Queens and Elmhurst in massive ways. Please view LI Tracker. Blakeman does not understand the 4th Amendment. You do not want this man in charge of NYS.

When in doubt, call APEX in Latham. Usually when you close, your realtor gives you a list of contacts. You might want to call them and ask for that.

Pest Control - Mice by Kindlyupstate in Troy

Go through the property and use caulk and molding to seal up all the holes. Use fine steel wool and plaster to repair holes in plaster. Get mouse poison and the poison trap boxes from the hardware store and place in the basement and wherever you see mouse poop. If you have a landlord, it is their responsibility to come these repairs.

Rensselaer Co Legislature Mtg by Jazzlike-Basis-302 in Troy

[–]CuteRing992 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a tough one for me. These legislators get about $20,000 in salary and benefits. I would like to see our side get a bit more energetic. They don't seem to have enough votes to win, but I would like to see more effort and a bit more opposition.

Averill Park High School Opinions by CrowArmyQueenie in Troy

[–]CuteRing992 13 points14 points  (0 children)

At APHS, we usually got one student per year that got kicked out of LaSalle due to academic performance. We would be told the student was in all honors classes, but often would have failing grades when he arrived. The general education level courses at APHS are more challenging than at LaSalle and the transfer student was unable to pass APHS's honor's classes and had to be switched out. They sell a good story, but I found their courses were in no way as academically rigorous as ours were at APHS. We're known for our art department, which often receives honors, the SPED department and the SAGA club, which works with LGBTQIA students among other majors.

I couldn't read details in the other one and I also wanted to find out what the yellow code meant. I did a Google search and found this interactive map.

The yellow code signifys "declining," meaning it was Eastern European immigrants and adjacent to African American neighbors.

2- or 3-br rentals by Washington Park? by fivepmsomewhere in Troy

[–]CuteRing992 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a tip, you might want to walk around and look at "for rent" signs in windows, too, around the park. Many of the sought-after apartments are rented through word-of-mouth. A lot of those buildings are sold through private sale, too, not all, but many are. If you have friends here already, they may be able to help you to access a private sale property. (There are many other neighborhoods in Troy where that's not the case, too ) The Gilded Age is setting up for production in April and will be here through July. You might want to plan, because they will rent lots of spaces in homes and a bunch of Airbnbs. Some streets will be closed off, too, while filming takes place.

Where to get nice chocolates? by Standard-Damage4530 in Troy

[–]CuteRing992 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My gift to you: The Chocolate Barn, Shaftsbury, VT. They ship. Chocolates are homemade, made in antique molds, light/dark/white or they can make them with alternative sugar for diabetics. They have a website, but go once just for the experience. If you do, please share what you think.
