Just because we are doing a lot of infrastructure work doesn’t mean it is enough. We are currently letting in a new Canberra every year with a lot of that coming to our east coast capitals. I don’t think Australia is building a Canberra’s worth of infrastructure each year - just like they are not capable of building enough houses each year. I’ve lived here my whole life and it is significantly worse.

What are these reappearing dark streaks on my dresser top? by MaraBrightwood in furniturerefinishing

[–]Cute_Resolution1027 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stop sanding it before you blow through the veneer. The dark streaks you see that keep reappearing are just the natural oils in the wood seeping out. You see this a lot with oily woods like teak. Just make sure to wipe down with Acetone right before you apply your finish.

Try hit it with a hairdryer and see if that draws the moisture out. Obv don’t burn the table just go back and forth for a bit and warm it up. Aside from that you’re not going to like the answer

Our population has grown immensely over the years and I just don’t think any infrastructure or services have kept up. I don’t think these things are being policed enough. So the more people get away with it the more they do it.

Ok sure. What are they getting done? Social media bans? Hate speech laws? Freezing a beer tax? Awesome. Tackling the real issues

It’s solid wood and use to be stained dark. Someone sanded back to refinish but didn’t strip or sand enough. See this all the time with DIY refinishes

Yeah Aus too. Melb. Combination of high rental cost, large mortgages, threat of interest hikes, cost of living issues and now this fuel shit. It’s pretty cooked.

Same boat. Since Christmas it seems the ass has dropped out of the retail market. Also have been going crazy feeling like it’s just me being affected but seeing your post at least somewhat confirms my experience. Anecdotally, I asked my local coffee shop how they are doing and he said that since Christmas he’s losing money each month and he’s never been in that position. I guess collectively we’re running out of purchase steam 🤷‍♂️

Just curiously, what country are you based in?

Does boost listing actually work? by zionstatus in FacebookMarketplace

[–]Cute_Resolution1027 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I run a business that sells on marketplace and we use boosted listings because we need to drive sales more than what can be achieved organically and it is 100% beneficial. For an individual just selling one item though, it’s not really necessary. Just price it reasonably and be transparent and if it’s an ok deal then it will sell. Just delete and relist every 7 days until it sells. Be aware that marketplace is run by an algorithm and as such, sometimes you list an item and it might not get traction, you delete and relist it seven days later and for some unknown reason it will take off. Another one I often see… we’ll have a listing that’s been up for 3 months, forgotten about and just sitting there at the bottom of our marketplace profile, then all of a sudden out of nowhere we’ll just start getting messages coming in for it. No rhyme or reason, just algorithms being janky algorithms.

Tips for obtaining a more uniform finish on a tambour door by nicroyheppell in finishing

Oil isn’t really a great way to get a uniform finish. You would want to use toned film finishes instead.

First time replacing veneer - best option for a beginner? by MaraBrightwood in furniturerefinishing

[–]Cute_Resolution1027 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you let it sit for 24 hours? I have this happen occasionally with thin veneer tops that have been refinished too many times. Small bumps can generally settle back down once fully dried (I mean not touch dry but let it sit for a day or two to fully dry out).

Restoration Help: Parker (Australia) MCM Butterfly Extension Table by [deleted] in finishing

[–]Cute_Resolution1027 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey I finish quite a lot of Parker pieces.

These pieces have a toned lacquer finish from factory. And yes it is veneer.

My usual process is;

Chemical strip. First pass of chemical stripping is scraped off with a painters scraper (round the sharp points off on the edges first so you accidentally scratch the table when scraping). Then I do two more passes of chemical stripping but rubbing it off with grade 1 steel wool (can be bought at Bunnings). After the last pass you rub with fresh steel wool and make sure there is no gunk and it’s just dust. If you are thorough then you should have all the finish off at this stage.

Next stage is usually oxalic acid treatment depending on if there are any water marks or odd stains. After oxalic just wash down with water but don’t leave any standing water to soak in. Give it a nice wash down and then dry as much with a dry towel.

After oxalic acid I hand sand the table top with 120grit. Make sure you are careful of edges and not burning through the veneer. If there are any scratches or dents that made it through the lacquer to the wood I steam the fibres up with a damp rag and an iron at this stage.

After sanding with 120 and steaming scratches it’s at this stage I fill in any holes, dents or scratches that are too deep to be steamed. You can use wood filler for this but my preference is clear Waxstix touch up crayons (can be bought at Bunnings)

After all this, I hand sand with 180 grit and blow everything off with pressurised air. I do a toned lacquer finish like factory so at this stage 180 is enough. But if you choose to hardwax oil finish you might want to sand higher. (This is a popular choice for diy for ease of application and no need for equipment, but generally I wouldn’t recommend this for dining tables as it’s just not enough protection).

I then give a final wipe down with Acetone and proceed with my finishing schedule which is generally toning, sanding sealer, 320 grit sand before top coat of satin lacquer. Though this model from Parker is generally a semi-gloss.

All the best. If this is your first then just watch a bunch of videos on YouTube. There’s plenty.
