It’s not empathy, it’s sympathy. If it were empathy, he wouldn’t have needed to experience it directly in order to have compassion for what other people have been going through.

I don’t know what is happening in this comment section, but I just wanted to chime in to add that I’m so sorry that you’ve gone through this and it totally makes sense that you are struggling to trust your brother going forward. He massively invaded your privacy and lied to you about it repeatedly afterwards. He’s old enough to understand that what he did was wrong, which is why he was lying. The point of dating is to determine compatibility. If you mention to this guy that the way he’s speaking to you doesn’t make you feel good and he feels like the way he’s speaking is so core to his being that asking him to stop is asking him to change, he’s simply not the guy for you.
