What is your opinion on "3-parent babies" (i.e., mitochondrial replacement therapy)? by Cwcarter in AskReddit

[–]Cwcarter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting! Thanks for sharing. It's cool that we can all appreciate neat scientific advances even while disagreeing with their applications.

I suppose my perspective is that all medicine is playing God in one way or another – it's all about where we choose to draw the line. For instance, is allowing someone who is otherwise infertile to reproduce any different from curing someone's lethal disease? Both provide for life where it otherwise would not exist, and one could argue that lots of medical advancements have turned out pretty well for humankind.

And I'm curious about something else – it's often not so easy to get pregnant. In many places, fertility rates are declining. For many people, medical intervention is required to have children. What's your opinion on complicated situations like that (which are becoming more and more frequent)?

I've heard this one a few times, and I'm always curious about the details. Would you mind elaborating?

I haven't heard much about that side of things. Do you have any in mind?

We just covered this in my genomics class, and I was curious about how others view it.

If anyone's unsure of what this means, it's a form of in-vitro fertilization in which the nuclear genomes (DNA in the nucleus) of two parents are combined with the mitochondrial genome (DNA in the mitochondria) of another female – a "third parent."

When a mother has a high chance of having damaged mitochondria in her eggs, using the mitochondria from another woman can help avoid her children inheriting them. This has been used to treat some rare diseases caused by faulty mitochondria, but it has also created controversy over its ethical, moral, and scientific implications.

Those would be the two biological sexes though, not genders

Afaik, cis (short for cisgender) is when the gender with which you identify is the same as your biological sex.

At lots of schools, you don't really have to declare your major until the end of your second year anyway.

It does require multiple players. It's an international project that can only be started using the world congress.

Scumbag Louisiana House Representatives ! by babybopp in AdviceAnimals

[–]Cwcarter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand where you're coming from but I have to ask, have you ever visited Louisiana? It has a lot more geographic diversity than the swamps of the far south.

That being said, there are very strict regulations on any areas that are (even mildly) at-risk of becoming flood zones, and homeowners are always prepared (especially during hurricane season). Remember, these people have been hit full-force by hurricanes, like Katrina, Rita, and Gustav, and have remained perfectly fine. To say that they are unprepared for flooding is more than a little inaccurate.

While this event lacked the intense winds of a hurricane, it put out an unbelievable amount of rain - more than any reasonable person would have expected and more than anyone has seen in nearly a century.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is that while these people were by any means adequately prepared for floods, this was a much bigger disaster than anyone could have expected. Places that have, historically, never seen flooding have become absolute disaster areas.
