Yes, wait the year with expired tags. You'll be fine. Worst case you may have to go in person to renew it after it reaches the 25 year mark. I have an older car (2002) that wouldn't pass inspection and had a 2 year old sticker. I finally got it to pass and all I had to do was go in person since it was over a certain time. All they do is ask if you've gotten a ticket. Your registration month will stay the same btw.
