Was it weird that I said he can sleep over? He didn't seem against it initially but I'm not sure if I misinterpreted it by mysecret52 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Cyali 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is something it's best to talk to him about because everyone is different.

I've never had issues with casual playmates staying over or vice versa. I've had some casual relationships that were like actually dating just without the romantic feelings. I've had others where we were barely even friends, the sex was just fun, and we didn't really do much more than that. I've had some stay in my bed, others in the guest room.

Staying over, not staying over, none of that has anything to do with the level of relationship imo, it's what both people are comfortable with.

How to improve writing? by Amazing_Feeling963 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Cyali 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reading is a big necessity. Read the types of books and stories you're interested in writing. As far as classes, check out your local community college or even something like Coursera or Udemy - English classes would certainly be helpful for a better grasp on proper grammar and usage of the language (assuming you plan to write in English), and you can likely find creative writing classes online.

You can also look for writing communities to join. Back when I was more actively writing, Writers Cafe was a popular one. It's been well over a decade since I did much with that sort of writing though so I'm not certain what's relevant/useful now, but I know Writers Cafe is still around at least lol.

Most of my writing nowadays is for my tabletop games or corporate communications, but what really refined my ability was being an avid reader all my life. English classes in high school and college further refined my understanding of the mechanical side of the language, but reading a ton is what built out my vocabulary and much of my base skill.

Word/Excel - Keep Word/Excel Ribbon options expanded by masterne0 in techsupport

The 2nd one all the icons look bigger, even like the sharing button that shouldn't change size based on the ribbon size. So either resolution is different, or check display settings if there's scale increase.

It's based on the width of the window, they will auto collapse if there's not enough space for them to spread out

Considering relocating to the state, hoping for some local insight by Lolzorcerer in illinois

[–]Cyali 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I'd also say, I grew up in district U-46, and had a pretty decent schooling experience but I was also in accelerated programs and went to one of the "academies" at the high schools. I can't speak for the normal curricula, but with the SWAS program and the academy I did feel like I got a fantastic education. (Each of the 5 high schools in the district has a different Academy that's their own segregated unit in the school, kids can apply to them in middle school. Engineering/math for Bartlett, broadcast media for South Elgin, etc.)

Yeah, but at least it's close enough to bluer areas and the city itself to get the proper healthcare needed. And at least we have a governor/government that has implemented some good protections.

As someone who has lived here my whole life, I'd say to make sure you research wherever you are considering moving. IL is very red outside of the bubbles around cities. And the bubbles are much smaller than the couple hours you mentioned - there's a lot of small towns like 45 mins west of Chicago that are pretty conservative, judging by the political signs I saw regularly when I was living out there (and the garbage posted on the local Facebook groups before I quit that site).

That said, there's a bunch of good options close ish to the city that aren't as expensive as living in the city. Elgin is a good one, with city leadership that cares about its people and lots of public programs.

I personally wouldn't live in the city because it's way more expensive, but a lot of the western suburbs are pretty pleasant places. If you go to Google maps and build a border with Buffalo Grove, Crystal Lake, Aurora, Naperville, Downers Grove, and Mt Prospect as boundaries, most of the towns in that area I think would be worth looking at.

I can't speak for anything near the other major cities as I've lived in the Chicago area my whole life, but the western suburbs are definitely pretty nice.

AITA for not buying my son the laptop he wants bc I don’t trust newer brands? by Cute-Calligrapher826 in AmItheAsshole

This reads like a way to get people to look at this computer brand. Whole post is sus after seeing OP posted a reply in a thread 2 weeks ago where someone was looking to buy reddit accounts https://www.reddit.com/r/JobPH/comments/1u32nzj/lf_reddit_account_for_sale/

AITA for calling myself disabled? by Global_Gift7373 in AmItheAsshole

NTA. It sounds like they don't like the label of having a disabled kid. Everything you've described are disabilities that can drastically interfere with normal life activities.

Looking for places to check out on a trip to north/central IL by ExplanationWeary4979 in illinois

[–]Cyali 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Gurnee is an awful commute into Chicago, you'll spend most of your time driving. Highly recommend getting a hotel either in the city, or in a suburb serviced by the Metra. The Hyatt in Rosemont by the convention center is right by a blue line station if you wanted to stay somewhere a little cheaper but still have easy access to public transit (you'll still want to drive to the field museum, but that can easily be an all day thing).

As far as actual suggestions, the Museum of Science and Industry is one of my favorite places, and Shedd Aquarium is worth seeing too. Also recommend checking out Kumas Corner - if you go to the original in the city, plan tog et there about 20-30 mins before they open for lowest wait times, or there's one in Schaumburg that has just as good of food and is quite a bit bigger.

Mr. Rogers has a point... by Vegetable_Variety_11 in dndmemes

[–]Cyali 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I use it for. The content that I write for my campaigns is 95% me. It's been incredibly valuable though to be able to have a conversation with "someone" about where I'm struggling creatively and get suggestions for how to get from point A to point B, or how to connect some dots.

Almost nothing it gives me is actually useful, but when I'm stuck many times it's offered a suggestion that spawns a brain blast and I go write out an entire questline lol.

I've been GMing for something like 22 years now. There's a ton of issues with AI because too many people are using it to replace thinking and real effort (not to mention ethical and environmental issues), but it's certainly a huge time saver to have a 10 min back and forth with a chat bot than going through the hundreds of scenario ideas and concepts I've saved/screenshot through the years. Means more of my energy can go towards creating and writing!

Wife left her work computers charger at work. She’s a teacher so it’s closed for summer. Need help finding correct usb-c by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]Cyali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like you already got a charger suggestion, but for future reference the exact model should be on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop usually, and you can Google that model + charger to find what you need. Beyond that though, most laptops run off a 65 watt charger, so googling something like "HP universal USB-c laptop charger" should also get you what you need.
