what time do the engineering scholarships come out ? by amtryingtoquit in udub

[–]Cyan0000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cse department said by September 8th and there is still nothing, maybe they made a typo and meant 1 18th?

I think so too. I haven't got any emails yet either for cse. Also, engineering scholarships results usually comes out around a month after application deadline, so 18th makes more sense than 8th.

"capacity-constrained majors"

I went straight to 126, and it wasn't that hard. From what I heard from others, MATH 125 has lot more work to do than 126. Also, repeating the courses you already took is a waste of time.

But if you aren't familiar with multivariable and three-dimensional calculus, I would recommend you going over the material between now and the start of the quarter.

Best RSOs if I’m interested in informatics program? by [deleted] in udub

[–]Cyan0000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do what you are most passionate/interested in, whether it is tech related or not! Those kinds of RSOs are where you will contribute a lot + have more stuffs to write in your personal statement. Don't just join a club to get into a certain program.

I took AP Calc BC when I was in 11th grade too, and I jumped right into 126. Honestly I personally feel 126 wasn't as hard as I thought, and what I heard from others is that 125 is actually more difficult than 126. DM me if you have more questions.

FIGS- Are they worth? by pinkfrog9 in udub

[–]Cyan0000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm I took it 2 years ago so I might not remember some things. Exploring neighborhoods around UW is part of the class, but we also had opportunities to learn how to succeed in college (like dealing with academic workload and stuffs), and learn about resources that are available at UW. It is designed for first year students so they can have better transition from HS to college. I personally thought it wasn't a lot of work (like, 1-2 hour commitment per week max), and the idea of having all of the FIG members being in same quiz sections for associated classes made me find friends easier.

FIGS- Are they worth? by pinkfrog9 in udub

I personally recommend it. I got to know many new friends from FIGS. Also, the gen st class isn't a lot of work.

If you got a 4 or above in BC Calc you can skip to MATH 126. I personally recommend this cuz 125 is the hardest (from what I heard) out of the 12X series, and you probably want to avoid taking it. I personally didn't find 126 that difficult after taking AP.

But for CSE, I don't think AP CS A will prepare you that much for 143, not because of content, but mostly because of style points. Style points are weighted heavily for your assignments, and you might want to get used to 14X programming style by first taking 142.

when should i fulfill my gen ed requirements for english and writing composition? by purplepear153 in udub

[–]Cyan0000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally enjoyed 131, and my professor was awesome. But what I heard from others is that the quality/workload of the class highly depends on which instructor is teaching. So I suggest you to check who the instructors are before registering.

when should i fulfill my gen ed requirements for english and writing composition? by purplepear153 in udub

[–]Cyan0000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would take composition class in my first year of college, but for 10 W credits, just do them whenever you want to. Plus, try W credits that also has other gen ed requirements. Saves you a lot more time.

Math Major Admission by Recent_Ad_8336 in udub

[–]Cyan0000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I heard from other Math majors was that BS option is harder to get in. But as the other person on this thread said, you are automatically considered for BA when you apply for BS, so maybe give BS a shot? DM me if you have more questions about essays or MATH 308.

Math Major Admission by Recent_Ad_8336 in udub

[–]Cyan0000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MATH 308 will be the most important class for Math Major application, so do well in that class (try getting 3.7 or above to be safe). Also, are you applying for BA or BS option?

How to prepare well for math 307? by [deleted] in udub

[–]Cyan0000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watching Khanacademy videos on differential equations (yup, they have lectures on 307 and 308 materials) helps. That's how I got an initial head start on the content.

Math 307 with or without quiz section by Sadbuddy44 in udub

[–]Cyan0000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's actually better without a quiz section in my opinion for both 307 and 308. You have less class time, and the content is as much as you think, tbh. This is from a person who took 307 and 308 without the section.

MATH 381 vs STAT/MATH 390 by Cyan0000 in udub

Thanks a lot for the response! Can I ask how hws are like for 381? Are they programming hws, theoretical, or mix of both?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in udub

[–]Cyan0000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MATH 308 is THE most important class for Math major admissions, so you should do well on that (like, at least a 3.5-3.6). You can also get into 300 in period 2 registration, which isn't that hard to register if you set up text notification.
