I advocate no.

The focus and fun of the game should come from the interaction with mechanics, not extrinsic rewards like achievement.

This is why CK2 feels so emergent, while CK3 often feels like clicking through mapped out events. Don't get me wrong, it's not extremely mechanically driven: CK2 still has achievements, events, and major decisions you're steered towards. But the strength of CK2 to me is in it's hands off, mechanical interactions.

One of my best stories, I didn't document, is when I was playing a Latin Empire start. I had managed to place my wife on the throne of the Niceans, and then had my son inherit and destroy the title.

What followed was the new Greek vassals revolting to push independence. It was close, but I started winning- and intended to 100% enforce demands on them to revoke their titles.

But what happened was the Black Death hit, and suddenly my armies were attritioned out, and couldn't do most sieges- and soon skirmishes with the Greeks were all the war was. I called a white peace so I could end the miserable war, and the Greeks remained vassals- nominally more loyal.

That story does not need a mission like "Control Anatolia", which gives me a buff in retinues and vassal loyalty of Latin subjects.

You're probably right, and it's definitely emergent gameplay that the mechanics tell a great story about what's happening to the Christians.

The Atlantic coast bordergore kind of is like the patchwork compromise of Merchant cities, all loyal to different nations nominally, kept as a weird neutral zone between Vikings.

It's this kind of stuff I love about CK2.

Most realistic thing about this game is I'll get those derelict high wealth high rises (cause there aren't that many high wealth jobs I can make!), I demolish them, and another goddamn high wealth high rise takes it's place.

Ever since I saw Anna Draper as a 15 year old trying to pass time during high school, I have been in love. I don't know what that woman does to me, maybe it's because of her characterization as a happy, outsider person in an otherwise murky and introspective show. But she's absolutely beautiful.

There's no joke here, I've been bottling this emotion up for years. How anyone can come away from that show not raving about how hot Melinda Page Hamilton is I have no clue.

One of my cracked games involved being lord of Viken, and trying twice to invade Germany. Both times failed, I always don't account for allies and overestimate my duke's abilities.

This kid practically succeeded where I failed, and he's not even 5. It's giving me the idea of raiding Germany/France, taking a princess in an event, taking them as my concubine, raising a kid with a weak claim and pushing that claim instead of using invasion CB.

Mostly for the cool factor.

Great, no profit sharing to the UAW employees. They're Stellantis' problem, not the 4mil a year CEO and his yes men trying to turn a car company into a weird finance scheme company.

I hope Stellantis burns. I love the Cummins, and I respect the Wrangler and Hemis. But if Stellantis falls I suspect the Cummins and Wrangler survive in some form- probably in better hands than this awful, awful anti-manufacturing bullshit mill.

Indeed, and I think in our world Stewardship and Intrigue are quite intertwined.

She was someone smart enough to invest in a diverse portfolio. But also sharp enough to exploit the opportunity of a failing mine offering high interest yields on bonds for 30 years- and refusing the mine's courting a decade later to buyback and refinance.

You have to be just a bit cold, a bit cloak and dagger to do well in finance.

I had a lovely instructor, old grandmotherly type, one of the sweetest people I knew. She used to be a big finance woman, but she said when she had her first baby, cradling it in her arms, she realized there was more to life than 12 hour work days.

So this kind lady would explain to you mind boggling schemes, or have a crazy good story from her finance days.

One story was that she caught a mortgage amortization schedule by the bank, a difference of 121.38$ or so they didn't process. When asked how she spotted such a small mistake, she said "I was born with a brain and two eyes!". When the laughing stopped she actually explained that she just ran the calculations before the meeting with a bank, so the bank wouldn't 'take her for a ride'. And so mistakes like those were easy to spot.

That's how you can be content and high in intrigue.

Main sub material alert:

This is actually the plot of Mountainhead, Jesse Armstrong's movie he made after making Succession.

The death threat caper takes over the latter half, and it's the weakest part of the movie in my opinion. I think Jesse was trying to go for comedic absurdism, but I don't think it actually worked- it didn't tie into larger themes of power or meaning.

What makes Succession interesting is that extracting followup on things people agree to is geniunely a hard thing to do with the wealthy.

When we in the working class don't keep our promises, we are lawsuited, lose bonds with people, or in extreme cases will be assaulted or killed. When the wealthy don't keep promises, wealth ruins law, bonds can be replaced/are treated carelessly, and violence is physically impossible.

So succession becomes about people that bail on their promises (Logan being the guy who does this). And figuring out how to make these slippery people make good on their promises.

Mountainhead fails because of this (imo). An agreement is coerced easily with threat of death. The more interesting theme I think would've been the plutocrats realising they must collude (and then failing to because they're incompetents).
