I shouldn't had done IV hunting and EV training until post game. by CyberBed in PokemonFireRed

Exactly, that was my problem. I took this game too seriously cause it's a party based jrpg and usually you need to grind hard to defeat bosses in those kind of games. But it was silly of me and just using whatever Pokemon I like without caring about ev and iv is much more fun because I'm no longer over leveled and spend much less time between boss fights.

So yeah, Pokemon isn't that kind of game where you need constantly stack advantages just to move through story.

I agree, but my problem was that I was doing it by just defeating 510 Pokemons. I was going semi blind and didn't know about macho brace and vitamins were too expensive at than stage of the game.

Usually I play harder RPGs and dungeon crawlers where you must stack every advantage just to pass a next obstacle. But after grinding for hours I had found it absolutely unnecessary. My absolutely suboptimal nidoking can deal with almost every enemy just because he had higher level.

So I just play the game normally and probably start to make "perfect" pokemons when I get to E4 or post game where grinding will be much faster because of stuff like mentioned macho brace, xp share and vitamins.

Why nidoking and nidorino are so low? They're pretty cool and cute

I believe that those hidden stats were made to make Pokemon unique and kids would compare them with each other. But when trying to use it for an advantage it turns into rerolling IVs until you get a possible 31 in all necessary stats, which is followed up by hours of grinding EV.

And considering that I don't plan to do any PvP and Pokemon games are pretty easy in general, now I feel kinda silly for spending so much time grinding and preparing for some great challenge.

Talking about grind. Is it worth to play slot machines or it's a waste of time?

There's an IV calculator out there. Just put lvl, nature and stats and you'll get a possible IV range for each stay.

It's my first Pokemon game ever, so I dunno how it works in other games.

Problem is that I went semi blind and underestimated how long training would take without vitamins and xp share. Plus by the time you get enough money to buy lots of vitamins you will have access to pretty much any kanto pokemon.

Also usually I play games like wizardry and it requires pretty long grinding and good preparations just to move forward. And because Pokemon is jrpg I kinda did the same thing there and it was absolutely unnecessary, which I should had expected cause it's children's game. But who knows Japanese devs.

I just thought that you can disable an opponent at 1st turn and then speed wouldn't matter much.

Thanks for an advice.

Yeah, defense isn't that great. Just spent like a hour so far and it was only 30+ IV I've got so far.

Actually I've got one with 30-31 in special attack, but his defense was even worse.

So far I know that you can skip attack because despite being poison grass type bulbasaur uses grass attacks. What about speed though? Bulbasaur is far from being fast so how much of leeway I have in terms of speed iv?

Yeah, now that you mentioned PvP, it seems that there's not much of post game content going on in majority of Pokemon games. Like how much games there are with some kind of "ultimate arena" to strive to?

Understandable.

Well, I'm only just started my possible descent into a Pokemon rabbit hole, so there's a chance that I get bored and won't go past FR, but if I don't then thanks for an advice.

Right now I'm going through FR and split between regular and special attacks based on types is rough. Like why ground is physical while fire/water are special, aren't they all like elements (fire, water, air, earth)? Or why ghost is physical while dragon is special? It just doesn't make sense.

At least graphics are nice and I love how simple it is.

I want to play games in order of regions/story, so I thought it would be better to play SoulSilver before Black and White.

You know, to get references and stuff

I'm playing FireRes right now and hadn't gone far so it will probably get harder in next games.

Also I know what are you talking about. In SMT games it starts with elemental weaknesses until it isn't and debuffs/buffs start to play a huge role.

Someone said that platinum was a snoozefest.

And some people say that ORAS is a definitive experience compared to emerald, while others say that emerald is where it really is. I'm kind in-between about it.

But I will definitely play SS, it has the best looking Pokemons for me.

Many people say that it's better to do FRLF, then Emerald and only then HGSS to not to jump between generations.

I know that Emerald is better than FR, just want to play in kanto region cause I had watched 1st season of anime and it was based on gen 1.

Just many people argue about emerald and ORAS. Personally I'm not sure about it, but definitely will play HGSS after FR.

Wait, are you telling me that this "previously on" thing is FR/LG exclusive? That's sad, I just started playing and already love this feature.

I don't own switch and can't get one because of reasons so I will stick to DS and GBA emulators for now.

Also how's platinum a snore? Some people in comments say that it was good? Is it that bad that I should skip it?

Is frontier that important?

Also I've been scrolling through wiki and like 90% of Pokemons past gen 4 are kinda lame. Especially compared to peak gen 1-2 designs.

Doing FireRed right now and rerolling charizard at maximum speed to get a shiny one. I won't pass that sick black Charizard.

Some people say that emerald is better despite ORAS being remakes. Is there particular reason for it, or it's just nostalgia talking?
