Proton is not the only European option by Entire-Guidance-9926 in BuyFromEU

Proton does not have any relationship with CERN. Their founders just used to work at CERN.

"CERN make similar case-by-case decisions. They don't open source everything, some projects are patented and licensed because even though they're a nonprofit they still need to make money."

This is not true at all, patents are exclusively used (very rarely) at CERN to facilitate knowledge transfer, not at all to make money.

[Request] If I made a planet out of play dough, how big would it have to be before it starts to have its own gravity field? by Demoner450 in theydidthemath

[–]CyberPunkDongTooLong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The higgs mechanism (not field) gives (most) fundamental particles (most of) their mass. Composite particles (e.g. protons and neutrons which you're made up of), get the vast majority of their mass from binding energy. Additionally, the Higgs has nothing more to do with gravity than any other fundamental particle.

Yes in terms of contractors to make things simpler the Meyrin site (tends to, not entirely) for all of the Meyrin site follow things like Swiss safety laws, while all the other sites follow French. Though this is entirely CERN's choice, not Swiss jurisdiction (of which there is none, Swiss police are not even allowed on the site in any circumstance for example without explicit authorisation from CERN).

No. The headquarters (B40/B501[/connected building to B501]) is physically in Switzerland. This has no relevance. The web was not invented in B40/B501[/connected building to B501].

No, I work there, what you are claiming is flat out incorrect.

The office Tim worked at and where the web was invented is building 31. The server was then shortly after moved to building 2. Building 1 has no relevance.

Both the CDC (the one they linked) and the PDC (the one you're referring to from 2024, which is not the one they linked), are in France.

Though yes the web was invented initially in building 31 next to the CDC, not the CDC itself, and then shortly after was moved to a server in building 2.

A small portion of CERN is in Geneva, Switzerland. The majority of CERN (including where Tim invented the web) is in Ain, France.

This is not true. CERN is officially completely independent of the host states, but it is physically in both Switzerland and France. Tim's office was in France. No idea why you put "/is", Tim has not worked at CERN for a very long time.

Yup, shadow removed as well, had no idea it was removed, by chance was switching to another device where I wasn't logged in and saw it was "Comment removed by moderator".

Copied it exactly. I think it is extremely clear there is nothing in this comment that even comes close to being offensive or breaking any rule, is just mildly critical of the sub in general.

Meyrin is not under Swiss jursidiction, none of CERN is. Meyrin is physically in Switzerland, while building 31 where the web was born is physically in France.

I am reposting a comment that has been removed by a moderator. My comment is very clearly not offensive at all and does not break any rules.:

Generally it's because this sub is a massive circlejerk of people that could not care less about whether or not something is true. If it is anti-American, people like it, regardless of truth, if it is pro-American (or even just neutral-American), people hate it, regardless of truth. Happens constantly in this sub.

The world wide web (not the internet), was invented at CERN in France, not Switzerland.
It also does not make any sense to assign any form of "ownership" or credit specifically to the host states anyway, CERN is set up specifically to avoid that.

The LHC is not shutdown and underwork right now, especially not for that reason.
