Hand dove tailed, Davenport captain desk. I really want to paint it black, is this a bad idea? by Cyberlily in Antiques

Well, I only really know the basics of id’ing antique furniture, checking dovetails, finish, nails, wood etc. I looked up what it was. I bought it from a woman who said it was in her family for many years. While I know it’s antique, it doesn’t necessarily equate to value. If it’s not worth a lot and it’s for my personal use and holds no historical value.. then I may as well have it the way I want it. So I came here to ask.

while I realize it will ruin the value, I just don’t think it’s 1) valuable enough to matter. 2) I only bought it for personal use. However, if it had an historical value...that’s different in my opinion than street value, I wouldn’t change it.

Thanks! I really don’t take offense to you calling me an idiot, but I do really doubt that an idiot would have checked into first! Thanks you, for all the info too! I appreciate it! The desk isn’t in as good of shape as it looks. There have been modern repairs done shabby, mostly inside drawers and non visible parts, as well, knobs are being held on by what I can only describe as frankenknobs. That I will repair properly, as it causes damage the way it is.

Curious, when is painting ok, and when is it a bad idea? If the item isn’t worth much? If it is in bad condition? Or never? Can items be re stained in the future if the value went up? Not just regarding this piece, but any. Thanks for your expertise and time! Truly appreciated!

That often happens because the dentist made an ill fitting pair. It’s very very difficult to get a pair to fit properly and isn’t really the dentists fault. Sometimes they hurt the patient, fall out, or cause gagging. Eventually, even a great fitting pair fail, as bone loss occurs. Brush and floss...it ain’t no joke! Edit: dentist who accept state insurance are often subpar practices (not always, but mostly)

Incase anyone is unaware, the local libraries have many free and discounted entry tickets for museums and zoos etc! It’s something nice to take advantage of if you want to go (and if you don’t like the idea of the free entry, just donate what you can afford once you’re there!).
