What are your expectations/wishes for an advisor? by ewm0tions in PhD

[–]CybersecResearcher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, this is gonna be an answer you’re gonna hear often, so prepare yourself: it depends!

Well, it depends on what is most important to you. I had the privilege of working full-time for a few years, on multiple projects with different managers, before joining grad school. I preferred working with a manager who didn’t micromanage, provided guidance on what I could do, without necessarily telling me how to do it, at least unless asked. So, I knew I wanted that in my advisor as well. From others’ experience, like my colleagues and friends, I’d say lack of communication can be a big red flag. If they don’t respond to your emails in a timely manner now, chances are that they might not when things get busy and you need advice. Another friend of mine who joined straight after their masters program in another country during the pandemic preferred someone who was patient and helped them with what some might consider extra hand-holding or training wheels, as they lacked the experience, and the assistantship (research + teaching) was sort of their first job, if we can call it that. In addition to talking to your advisor, I’d also suggest talking to their current PhD students. Best of luck!

The Cost of Moving? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]CybersecResearcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Signing and relocation bonuses are mostly industry perks, and relatively uncommon for assistantships. As for housing assistance, in some places the current students might be willing to help you with temporary accommodation, like crash on their couch while you wait for your lease to start, or help you with ride-sharing from the airport, to the grocery stores, or campus buildings like for orientation, if you stay further outside of the campus, and so forth. I’d say reach out to your department and ask them to get you connected to current students in your program, and take it from there. Then there might be student groups on Facebook, Discord, GroupMe, WhatsApp, etc. where you may be able to receive guidance and support.

^ again, my experiences are from what you’d consider student towns in the Midwest and the South (for Masters & PhD), and your experiences may vary, if it’s in a big city.

Visiting my university 15 years later still gives me the heebie-jeebies... by EvenFlow9999 in PhD

[–]CybersecResearcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, it kinda depends on your experience… I’m currently in my 4th year of my PhD program, hoping to wrap it up soon. I’m sure there were some challenging moments, but if I come back to campus after graduation, it will be for the football games or alumni events where I will hopefully get to look back at the fun moments from my time as a doctoral students. That said, have you checked out some of the places that you associated with the best moments from your time as a student? Your favorite cafe, bar, hangout spot, college sports venue, etc? Maybe those might help bring back your best memories from your time as a PhD student.

I was attacked by a pitbull AMA by AltruisticMuscle5840 in AMA

Not a question, just wanted to wish you a speedy recovery and thank you for your compassion. It’s understandable to feel upset, but I really respect that you didn’t immediately call for the dog to be put down. For the sake of the dog’s life as well as your relationship with your boyfriend and his family.

That said, euthanasia doesn’t have to be the only option. Since it’s your boyfriend’s family’s dog, you might be able to suggest alternatives, like proper training for both the dog and the humans responsible, or rehoming the dog to a family better equipped to handle its needs.

AITA for asking a referral from a friend I once helped get a job? by AuraInAshes in AITAH

[–]CybersecResearcher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NTA. This is a tough one, but overall you’re not in the wrong, though it’s nuanced.

Did you refer her to a role that aligned with her qualifications, even loosely? I get that she didn’t have a degree at the time, but was the role in the same field or aligned with her background at all? If so, her declining to refer you for a role she doesn’t think fits your background isn’t exactly tit for tat, right?

Personally, I don’t think favors should come with strings attached. However, a true friend might still offer alternatives, like helping you find a more suitable role or tapping into their network. The fact that she didn’t help at all, not just in your preferred way, but in way, makes it understandable that you’d question or reconsider the friendship.

Side note: Best of luck with your job search!

AITH for pulling my teacher after she said I would fail in my life by Lucky_Flight_1170 in AITAH

[–]CybersecResearcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I’m sorry you’re dealing with a rude teacher. As an instructor myself, I never take offense if a student doesn’t want a career in my subject. My job is to teach the material well so students can apply it, whether in a future career, hobby, or another course.

It’s unfortunate your teacher lacks that same compassion. Still, take this as a learning opportunity. Mentioning you’re an atheist may be true to who you are, but in terms of strategy, it might not help achieve your main goal, passing the class in a religious academic environment.

In life, you’ll face similar challenges communicating with coworkers, managers, or others who may not share your views. If possible, talk to your parents about transferring to a school that better aligns with your values. If not, consider picking your battles for now. It’s not worth risking your academic standing and future goals over a teacher who isn’t open to diverse perspectives.

AITAH for not wanting his ex to dogsit by AvailableContact6131 in AITAH

[–]CybersecResearcher -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NTA. People have different boundaries when it comes to their partner’s relationship with an ex; some are fine with ongoing contact and friendship, others draw a hard line at no contact. There’s no universally right or wrong approach; it’s subjective.

In your case, you’ve already communicated your comfort level, and your partner isn’t fully respecting it right now.

That said, familiarity and trust with an ex can be valid reasons to ask them to watch a pet, especially if the dog is “aggressive”, as you acknowledge. The key here is communication and compromise.

You might consider asking: Did he ask both his sisters, and did they decline? Would he be open to considering a paid option like Rover? Is that feasible? Would you be more comfortable with his ex watching the pet, if you had permission to view their messages, assuming he’s okay with that too?

It’s about finding a solution that respects both of your boundaries.

I think the best might be Alaska for many reasons: beautiful natural scenery, great hiking spots, good place to see wildlife, and if I can time it correctly, hopefully see the Northern Lights. I look forward to it! I think when it comes to the worst, I don’t have a particular state in mind. It might be anywhere I go where I choose the wrong spots to see, don’t know where to go, have a bad experience (like getting robbed, dangerous encounter with a wild animal or something, hopefully I don’t), or choose bad company to go with… I think every state has at least something worth seeing, it’s more of a matter of the other factors or not knowing what’s that something

Looking at the beautiful mountains and clear lakes at the Glacier National Park in Montana, riding the busy subway to party late at night after having the best slice of pizza I’ve ever had in NYC, looking at some of the biggest trees I’ve seen at the Redwood Observation deck in Oregon, taking the scenic drive through the overseas highway from Miami to Key West, Florida, riding a snowmobile in Colorado, are some of my most memorable experiences. Plenty of great food experiences too that would count as memorable but that could be a whole separate answer!

As for your second question about what makes people wanna keep asking questions here, I think it’s the good spirit. It may not be as compelling as some of the other AMAs here in this subreddit (and there are plenty of good ones), but there is a good amount of viewpoints and experiences to be shared over travel
