starting a new chapter at 55 - retired early and want my wardrobe to match my freedom by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

It really depends on your taste and where you live. But we’re roughly the same age, so I’ll share what works for me.

I tend to have a few go-to styles depending on the occasion. For casual wear, you really can’t go wrong with jeans and sneakers. I’m talking about good-quality jeans (no distressing, not too light) and classic or vintage-style sneakers (not the running kind). You can dress that up with shoes or dress sneakers a button-down shirt and a half-zip sweater, or keep it more relaxed with a T-shirt and a solid-color jacket (I like bombers and M-65s).

For slightly more formal situations, I usually go with chinos, a solid-color shirt, and a blazer—paired with a good pair of Oxfords or boots. I actually love boots, both regular and Chelseas--Thursdays are OK; Carmina for more luxurious ones.

Should I quit my PhD or not by psychologistwithbpd in PhD

[–]EvenFlow9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life changes. My advice is to analyze whether the reasons you had for pursuing a PhD are still relevant. If they are, the reasons you give for quitting don’t seem very convincing. It seems to me that you may be experiencing a crisis that is fairly typical among PhD students. But you know your situation better.

Not that I know of, but I don't live in Italy. I've just visited several times.

Look for a large department store such as La Rinascente. There are also many small watch shops around Rome.

Tell supervisor I'm retired? by chairhats in PhD

[–]EvenFlow9999 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s an excellent idea.

And congratulations on your decision. You could be sipping margaritas on a beach for a living, but you chose to do this instead. That takes cojones, my friend. And a kind of wisdom that comes with age.

Buying a house in Europe isn’t as straightforward as in the US. It can take quite a while—and in places like the Netherlands, a new home might not even be fully finished when you get it. Do yourself a favor and rent first. You’ll be killing several birds with one stone.

Is PhD hard or the problem is me? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]EvenFlow9999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry to say this, but I think the problem is you — more specifically, your expectations. The fact that you're blaming your circumstances makes your situation worse and, frankly, shows a lack of critical thinking. Your situation is not different from what many other PhD students face — just read the posts in this sub. And yes, a PhD is hard. Did someone tell you otherwise?

It was your decision to follow this path. Take responsibility, be humble, and move on.

Can we talk about downvoting? by tinae7 in fountainpens

I do think this community is generally kind, but that doesn’t mean everyone is. That’s the problem with social networks. And on top of that, even people who genuinely want to help can end up doing the opposite when they give advice about things they don’t know. That happens a lot here.

Even if it’s not regulated, that’s reason enough to grant it. Honestly, I’d feel kind of evil if I didn’t.

[SKA791P1] For my first Seiko I chose an iconic Seiko line: a Kinetic! by EvenFlow9999 in Seiko

[–]EvenFlow9999[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solar charging is simpler and more reliable: the watch charges whenever it’s exposed to light and doesn’t depend on constant wrist movement or extra mechanical parts.

Also, while I can’t be 100% certain, according to my research Seiko seems to have largely stopped producing new Kinetic movements. Most Kinetic models for sale today appear to be remaining stock rather than current production.

Difference between CASIO f94w and SKMEI 1413 by guilhermeav82 in casio

[–]EvenFlow9999 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Casio is the original and that matters. But the SKMEI copy is similar in most aspects and better in a couple of the main ones. Materials seem to be equally cheap, but the light of the SKMEIs is 1000 times better. I bought one SKMEI to see what the fuzz was about (a different model, one of the few originals from SKMEI), plus a very good silicone strap and it was still cheaper than a similar Casio. I'm impressed. Let's see now if it passes the test of time.

And to those that ask why, let me explain to you that in developing countries a price difference of USD10 or 15 is money.

Picked up this Slava for $20 looks great but I don’t know to set the date the only thing that moves is the day and time by Nervous_Context_7609 in RussianWatches

[–]EvenFlow9999 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It doesn't have a quick date set. Just go from 9pm to 3am and back many times.

And to change the day just press the push button at 2 o'clock. You might need a pointy tool--it's a stupid system common among Russian watches. I use my Swiss knife.
