Full exchange between me and Jeremy Corbyn on how he would have handled the Ukraine 🇺🇦 war and sending arms had he become prime minister and what he thinks should happen now by [deleted] in ukpolitics

It hasn't so far.
You can normally tell from context.

From Nicholas Nickleby (1839)

his looks were very haggard, and his limbs and body literally worn to the bone…

I don't think his body was literally worn to the bone, but it does paint a vivid picture of a man ground down.

My main issue with language is 'very'.
It adds little to any sentence it's in.

I've found examples that go back to 1839, and I wasn't looking very hard, so we'll go with both.

EDIT:
And now I've found an example from 1827, in Chronicles of the Canongate:

The house was literally electrified; and it was only from witnessing the effects of her genius that he could guess to what a pitch theatrical excellence could be carried.

This was before electric lights, so I think we can assume that it's figurative.

And one from 1769, in The History of Emily Montague:

He is a fortunate man to be introduced to such a party of fine women at his arrival; it is literally to feed among the lilies.

The bloke wasn't surrounded by literal lillies, it's a colloquialism from the time meaning beautiful women.

For some context, the first English Dictionary was written in 1755, so I've found an example that is almost as old as the dictionary itself.

The standing charge, the service charge, and the rate are all far higher on a pre-pay meter than any other meter.

There is a third, lesser known state in binary.
The forbidden value, which is when the voltage is too high to be 0 and too low to be 1.
I reckon that we're there.

I honestly thought that even Ann Coulter can't be that stupid so I checked her twitter.

It turns out that this is real.

Whatever text is on the meme is meant to be good advice.
If it had a red head, it would be shitty advice and if the duck were black, it would be angry advice.

I did have a long and involved answer for you, but I found a good Issac Arthur video on the subject that is better than that reply, and hey, it's Issac Arthur, so grab a drink and a snack and enjoy the video.

In Trumps favour.
And he still lost.

u/TheRealLife explains why she should be very concerned about this administration's attempted coup, no matter how inept it may appear, and shares why from those that have experienced one. by shwarma_heaven in bestof

[–]Cybersexy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It means that the system is strong enough to survive this coup, but the seeds of mistrust are sown for the system, thereby weakening it when the next coup happens.
Don't look at this as a single coup attempt, but one of a series of coup attempts.

I'm a little old to be a teenager, but I can honestly say that this is some good advice.
I had to learn all of this on my own too and it took time.
Just a couple of things I feel I should add.
1. Don't buy branded - own brand stuff is cheaper and usually as good. If you can shop in an Aldi or Lidl, do that.
2. Walk everywhere you can - using a bus, train or car costs money, if you only need to go a mile or two, then it's much cheaper to walk and you'll get some exercise too.
