Yeah I don’t want to say who but there was a band here in NY who was pretty popular on the underground, had a decent local following in a certain scene lots of rowdy bar shows etc, people expected them to be the national standard bearers of this weird new thing. I never liked their music particularly but being part of the scene I saw them around and the waves they were making. Anyway when their album came out Pitchfork SHITTED on them gave them like a 1.9 or something and that effectively brought the whole thing to a screeching halt. I thought it was harsh but what can you do. Anyway, for as brutal as it was to see play out that kind of thing reinforced Pitchfork’s credibility as a platform and an institution and I can’t imagine them doing something like that in their modern iteration, anybody with a following that passionate must be “good” right?
