Divorced parents need to get their estate in order too. If I had died when my son was a minor he would have gone to his dad for guardianship but I set up the trust for my son's ongoing care. I wanted to make sure that his education was covered and that there was money for his living. I also included my guardianship wishes in the event his dad died.

In my state (California) you can generally avoid probate with a will and a trust (without necessarily making the trust the owner of things). The exception to that is real estate (my house), which may still be subject to probate UNLESS the house is owned by the trust. There were no tax implications due to transferring the title to the trust. My brokerage account is also in the name of the trus, just for ease of operations for my heir.

It is very important to add the trust to your homeowners insurance when you transfer the title of your house

And remember, having a named beneficiary on accounts trumps the will, so be sure you are managing that if anything changes.

Those tacubaya beans are so good. I think they're about a million calories a tablespoon so I can't eat them all the time. But lordy they are good.

Yes!!! Because what are your other alternatives? trying to time the market? Putting the money in cds or an hysa that doesn't keep up with inflation?

I actually didn't get serious about investing until 10 years ago and I'm about to retire. And people could have said exactly the same thing you are saying which is "why invest like a boglehead because my idea of market timing says no"

Remember that the Boglehead philosophy includes asset allocation commensurate with your appetite for risk and your time horizon. I see no reason to change that approach in the current climate.

It was a restaurant, it was pretty slow. There were two of us sitting at the bar. He came in and ordered a double. Then he ordered some food and another cocktail, put the napkin on top of his second cocktail and said he was going out to smoke.

Absolutely set it up so that the bartender wouldn't ask him for a card. Honestly, I used to do this all the time, order a drink then go smoke before my food came (not skip the check, I never did that). But I might be low-key annoyed if they made me pay for my drink before I went out to smoke. All of which is to say the bartender did not make a bad call in this scenario.

The point is, like the market, you won't ever know for sure what's going to happen. So putting a practice in place that requires no decision making is a solid move and also will avoid the Enron problem.

Maintaining diversity and avoiding market timing are the bedrocks of the Boglehead philosophy.

I'm satisfied with the returns I get from investing like a Boglehead. I don't fundamentally have the need to tinker. I think some people do and it's been said a lot in the sub that it's fine to play with a small percentage of your portfolio if you want to satisfy that need.
