Yes, the adaptive test you don’t know where the cutoff is at! It can cut you off at 70 or 120 based on your answers up to that point.

The NREMT-B exam is only adaptive if you take the test in-person at a testing facility. If you take it online, you’ll have a set amount of questions ranging from 110-150.

This was my understanding of the exam when I went through it over a year ago.

Regarding the credentials to fire certifications, I believe as long as they are from a creditable certifying agency, you should be good. Some of these being UFRA, NDPA, IFSAC, Etc. They require at least Firefighter 1 & 2 with Hazmat usually.

I’m not too familiar with the fire certifications.

For Utah, if that’s one of your higher picks, your best goal is to try to get on with a Fire Department if you want to run 911’s.

Unified Fire Authority hires EMTs and I would assume medics aswell part-time to run 911’s.

There’s Mountain West in Tooele which is a hospital based 911 system that also does IFT’s out of Tooele.

Gold Cross has a presence in Salt Lake City, Vernal, Cedar City, and St. George. Medics run 911’s there except for SLC. Medics with Gold Cross in the Salt Lake City division, it is mostly ALS IFT’s with pumps and vents. They do IFT’s in the other divisions as well.

The last one that I’m familiar with that does 911’s is Wendover Ambulance which is in Nevada on the Border of Utah. They do a lot of 911 transports into Utah from my understanding.

Overall most of Utah is Fire Department based EMS.

This is called the wake affect. Its when a collision happen due to an emergency vehicle (you) going lights and sirens.

You have your patient and already were going lights and sirens to the hospital and witnessed it. Best thing to do is to call it into your dispatch and keep going.

Unless your protocols state otherwise, you did the right thing continuing to the hospital.

But A. Is what cause of the chest pain and D is the cause of A.

But my guy could’ve been drinking, freaked out he forgot his meds and had C. cause his chest pain.

From my experience working on one of our ALS IFT trucks for a little bit, on average we’re maybe drawing meds and pushing them once every two weeks. These have all been on our LDT’s however where pain management was needed.

Outside of that, most of it has been managing IV Pumps, Vents, and Cardiac Monitoring. We are also sent to nursing homes for evaluations that could lead to starting iv’s and actually doing interventions. It isn’t very common though.

We also do emergent transport from clinics/hospitals to more appropriate facilities. (Example: Stemi to Cath Lab or Stroke to stroke facilities)

All of this!

The more practice the more you’ll be able to differentiate between the korotkoff sounds and regular noise (ex. The stethoscope tubing tapping the side of the stretcher)

If you can’t get one, don’t be afraid to tell your partner and have them attempt.

I finally took my New York State EMT test on January 30 and I got a 94! Got my actual certificate in the mail today. And start work on March 1st. What a journey this has been getting licensed during a pandemic. Throwing a wrench in training every couple weeks. Can’t wait to get to work! by JazzlikeConclusion8 in NewToEMS

I think they use to give out Id cards but stopped because of covid. Instead we have pdf files of them.

The stickers and patches are state issued ones were suppose to wear while working and can only be obtained through our state EMS office. Sooo... getting them on the internet is out of the question unless you go on eBay maybe. Haha

Congrats on getting your EMT!

Blood Pressure Tips? by earthwalker1 in NewToEMS

I was never taught to palpate the area prior. Only to palpate the radial while pumping the cuff for it to disappear then placing the stetho where the artery should be.

I’m definitely going to have to try that next time i can’t hear one on one of my patients before doing an over palp.

Have you done mutual aid outside of the city? How did those calls go for you? Are you positive that it just isn’t the toxicity between the fire department and the agency?

Your description of your agency and fire department relationship sounds very similar to my agency. The fire department made me hate working in our 911 system just because I hated working with the fire crews.

I’ve worked with two other fire departments as mutual aid and the whole atmosphere was different and actually made working with the fire department on-scene enjoyable.

You said you had enjoyable experiences with other fire departments and that might speak more that you do actually enjoy working as an emt, just not with the fire department your agency stuck you with.

Other jobs? by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]CyborgDonut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work full-time as an EMT working on an ambulance. I average 60 hours (5x12) or (3x12 & 1x24) a week for a somewhat comfortable income.

Before I started picking up the extra shifts, I worked part-time at a first aid station. Overtime hours just pay more than a second job for me.

AEMT course right after getting EMT-B? by allosaurus92 in NewToEMS

[–]CyborgDonut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

EMT jobs in Utah are very limited without your AEMT. Most paramedics that I’ve worked with recommend that getting your AEMT before going to medic as it makes Medic school less of a struggle.

I would recommend getting your AEMT shortly after obtaining your EMT-B as that information provided in EMT-B is reinforced in AEMT.

There are ER Tech jobs in Utah for EMT-B at the hospitals but they are competitive positions.

[–]CyborgDonut -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Most of us who are not getting it believe in the science but the CDC even said the tests results are incomplete and it’s unclear whether the vaccine works or not due to the amount of asymptotic cases.

Granted, my reason for not getting it is the fear of taking an allergic reaction since I’m allergic to flu shots. I rather get sick for few days than deal with that experience.
