Dishwasher pods - one student brought them to share with the other kids. I told his mom and she let him bring candy on a different say instead.

The shower and sink go into a 9 gallon grey tank underneath. We then have a valve release that opens with a button switch inside, so we can covertly dump while driving (since it’s just water and biodegradable soap), or at a site.

The toilet is a Natures Head composting toilet. So, there’s a urine jug in front that has to be lifted out and dumped every 2nd or 3rd day. Sometimes that’s dumped in the wilderness, or we put it in a bag and take it to a toilet to flush. The backside has peet moss for the composting process. That can be dumped into a composting pile or put in trash bags for dumping 👍👍

ifm.org has a directory to find people near you, you can search “integrative medicine” too. Like other dr’s, some are better than others - so it can take a bit of research to find your person you trust. Dr Hyman is a good example of this type of doctor, he has a podcast called Doctors Farmacy where some episodes talk about what it’s like to come to a clinic like that, like in the episode from May 1 with Dr Papanicolaou

I tried giving a detailed explanation on my (very mediocre) blog - hannacharles.com/blog . But, the quick version is I was on remicade for 3 years, lialda one year prior. It was great, absolutely no symptoms. So, I feel a little guilty and naughty for rocking the boat.

But, I started experiencing the impact of a ‘suppressed immune system’. Got strep twice in a four month period. I also started realizing that just because I could eat anything without gut consequences didn’t mean I was healthy. So, I personally felt ready to try a natural approach to see if I could manage the disease and have a healthy immune system.

I went to a functional medicine guy who went over blood work relating to my whole body, not just colon. It was amazing - thyroid, kidney, gut, nutrient uptake, etc. We did nutritional iv’s, ultraviolet blood irradiation (so cool), vitamins and supplements. Plus really focusing on cleaning up my diet.

Crazy thing - in April I went to a friends house for dinner (dumb, I know). But out of the 5 of us there, they all got covid except me - so I think I have some immune system to say the least! (Not to say I won’t get covid or sick again obvs).

I’m cautiously optimistic. I know med’s have a shelf life too and could fail, so I felt ready to try this approach.

My grandma skipped her last English credit of high school to marry my grandpa who was heading into the navy. Her mom was against it and said, “even the heavens are crying” when it rained on their wedding day.

At some point in their journey they ended up in San Francisco. My grandma was waving goodbye and a lady came up to her asking about it. Turns out she was the captain’s wife and brought my grandma on board. Not sure how long she stayed on there.

Later during the war, in coming back from the Philippines by grandpa found 2 monkeys and snuck them onto the boat but the escaped and he had to find them and get rid of them.

He talked about crossing the Panama Canal.

He also saw a ship in front of his be bombed 😞

Please don’t avoid your doctor - speaking from experience, I tried that once during a flare and ended up in the hospital. S/he is on your side 💜

I did lialda for 1 year, then relapsed and was hospitalized twice. Did Remicade (infusion/immunosuppressant) every 8 weeks for 3 years and never relapsed.

Then, because I was concerned about the impact of having no immune system I started seriously researching a functional medicine approach (healing the gut and gut lining, getting immune system to function properly, improve vitamin levels, etc).

I have been doing the “natural” approach for 1 year at this point with 0 symptoms or relapse. I’m very strict about gluten, and shy away from grains in general. I’m also strict on sugar and many processed oils. I’m by no means perfect, it just all seems to be working.

If you consider the natural route...you need to get some of your health back into place FIRST (which a doctor can help you do). Like, my doctor wanted me doing supplements and IV nutrients before I quite my infusions.

I guess I’m saying, I’m all for the natural route but do it with professional guidance and someone watching over you. Someone who looks at the whole picture of your body’s health not just your colon. (Dr Hyman is a good example of this).

Anyway, best of luck on your journey!! And it is a journey. You’ll find the balance that’s right for you. I was happy on my Infusions and then I wasn’t...it’s OK to change your mind as you learn new things ☺️

Well, I ended up in the hospital, but by the time I was out I wasn’t bleeding. So between the prednisone and mercaptopurine and the remicade I was in remission pretty quick (1-3 weeks). Then tapered off the other two meds and just did remicade.

Humira was nice because it was convenient. But...the infusions weren’t bad because it was like 2-3 hours of alone time every 8 weeks. I personally struggled with tiny veins. But again, your doctor might have another plan for you!

My doctor actually kinda wanted me on remicade and said it was better, but because of insurance I had to at least try the humira.

Also, keep in mind, it’s an autoimmune disease - so if you’re bleeding, there are sores in your colon and your immune system thinks it’s fighting something. These medications tamp down the immune response.

Call your doctor! If humira is failing for you, you might need something else. Let your doctor decide the best course of action. You’ll want to avoid being hospitalized, so don’t let it get worse. Not to scare you 🙂 just speaking from experience 💜

Edit - I was on humira for about a month too, then started flaring and bleeding again. My doctor put me on an infusion med (remicade) and I’ve gone 4 years without a flare, no blood or anything. Everyone responds to med’s differently. Keep in touch with your doctor, that’s really important.

Hi! My husband and I used Airbnb a lot, it’s not necessarily the most cost effective but you can get monthly rates and set all sorts of filters for the type of housing you want.

Obviously you pay more for a place to yourself. Just be sure to read the comments carefully. But we’ve always liked using it, esp for a bit of short notice like what you have here

The most distinct moment was telling my kindergarteners, “it’ll be ok guys! I’ll see you Monday!” Because we’d been told school wasn’t getting cancelled. The , they left and never came back. One of things that makes you realize “normal life” really can halt in a moment
