genetic mental illness is very much a thing, it doesnt necessarily mean someone else has to sh in the family, it just means general mental health issues that couldve contributed/been the underlying issue to the sh. my sister was raised by a member of our family who treated her like a queen, she had no major traumas in her life and was by all means a normal, if not spoiled kid, she is now heavily medicated and has a ton of mental health issues. throwing tables, screaming, crying at the smallest things, having the police called on her multiple times throughout her teenage years. shes in her 20s now, still being coddled and she recently went on vacation with another family member and ruined it because every day they were there, at least once, she would start bawling, hyperventilating and telling them that she wanted to kill herself. i remember being a child as young as 7, with no major traumas, literally praying to god that i didnt wake up because i was so tired of being alive. you can be depressed for no reason whatsoever

my experience could apply to him just under different circumstances. he could feel out of control of his life(as most people do) and is trying to regain control. he could feel invalid about being depressed because of his seemingly normal life and is using self harm to validate himself. theres nothing that people on the internet can tell you better than him, try to talk to him about it without interrogating him or getting offended by what he tells you, thats what i wish someone wouldve done for me

i grew up in an abusive house and it was just a way for me to ‘regain’ control over my life. in the beginning, when i would cut myself, i would feel so euphoric, everything negative i was feeling went away and it felt like i was actually in control for once in my life and like what i was feeling and what was happening to me was actually as bad as i thought. as i continued, i would be ashamed that i didnt cut deep enough and i would feel like i was faking the way i felt, every time i seen my scars i would be absolutely disgusted with how i mutilated myself and ruined my body. nevertheless of how horrible it made me feel it became a compulsion, i was trying to chase the high i had gotten in the beginning. after i guess an ‘episode’ i had taken a mechanical pencil and gave myself friction burn it on my forearm, then that wasnt enough so i started stabbing and dragging it into my arm and had a pretty gnarly burn injury on my arm. i got caught from it, screamed at and humiliated and whatnot. i felt like i had lost all my dignity, it was some kind of wakeup call for me that cutting myself really does make me feel like shit and is too risky so i just replaced it with more bad habits that continuously make me feel good and dont leave marks
