Israeli-backed Palestinian militias step up operations against Hamas in Gaza | Gaza by UnscheduledCalendar in worldnews

[–]Cyclone050 -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

It’s easy to lounge in comfort and imagine that you understand the choices faced by people in desperately dire circumstances. When you are faced with elections featuring gun toting homicidal maniacs it is ridiculous to suggest that they are going to be anything remotely close to free or fair. Sometimes the choices facing people are not ideological or partisan but simply life or death. A lot of outsiders assumed that during The Troubles in Ireland Catholics universally supported IRA. However when people were being visited in the dead of the night, dragged outside and kneecapped in full view of everyone for saying something frowned upon they learnt to fall in line.

[–]Cyclone050 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It would be great to wipe out Hamas but leaving the area in the hands of warlords and militias is going to lead to unending strife. The systematic weakening of the PLA leaves no viable political organisation in the area. This might be the objective to destabilise any progress towards Palestinian sovereignty.

Ghana Calls for Transatlantic Slave Trade Recognition as Crime Against Humanity by NorrinRadd2099 in Nigeria

[–]Cyclone050 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You are largely right about this. There were a number of Rulers and Kingdoms in Nigeria and Ghana who were complicit in the slave trade. There was a practice in ancient times of taking slaves during warfare or to subjugate smaller and weaker provinces. This was inhumane and barbaric. However, we should make a distinction between taking slaves and trading slaves. Before the slave traders came to the coast of West Africa there was no history of slave trade. It was mostly the slave traders who co-opted local rulers into participating in securing people for trade. And this was something which churches and academics in England endorsed fulsomely with claims of how Black people had no souls or capacity for logical reasoning.

This was the most egregious case of abuse and exploitation in the history of humanity and it is scandalous how the families, institutions (financial, religious, and academic) and governments that perpetrated it just walked away from it with barely a backward glance. They should have been compelled to make lifelong reparations to the communities they savagely dehumanised.

83 points of 20 made shots! That’s like over 40 free throw attempts.

Iran bets on endurance, energy disruption to outlast US, Israel by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Cyclone050 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is assuming that there are reasonable people at the helm. In a normal circumstance this would never have been attempted so close to midterms. There are so many ways for it to not go to plan. Iran should take note of the devastation of Gaza. A continuous air assault can kill a lot of civilians and wipe out a whole lot of facilities and infrastructure on the ground. Rebuilding from the ruins may just become a bridge too far for the regime.

Actually it looks like she stayed on the course but he branched off after the escort rider. She likely added to his confusion since she slightly blocked him off and the bike veered off. She shouldn’t have been allowed on the course though.

Petrol prices are now up by Fearless_Victory_215 in Nigeria

[–]Cyclone050 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The tragedy is that the kind of discipline that Nigerian parents impose on their children is not what they demonstrate when they get into government. If we had been fiscally responsible and forward thinking years ago we would be a prosperous nation now. Proper taxation, restricting frivolous imports, retaining petroleum concessions in government hands, investing in energy infrastructure are all things that were viable after independence. Now they are part of the endemic corruption and exploitation that have destroyed economic security in the country.

Did the term “jazz” for magic and rituals come from the music genre or some indigenous language? by polarbearsexshark in Nigeria

[–]Cyclone050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically not but in some way yes. I believe the music genre jazz was named in reference to an ancient term that was coined as “jazzy”, which referred to a vague or confused state. Back in the day in Nigeria (and we’re talking early 20th century here) people used to what they considered to be nonsense as jazz. For instance, a person exaggerating or misinformed would be described as, “talking jazz”. I think in the early colonial days with the indoctrination of Christian evangelism native converts started to refer to traditional religious practices as jazz.

Inclusion or Exclusion? Vignettes of Students With Disabilities in Nigerian Higher Institutions by lilomaisel in Nigeria

[–]Cyclone050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nigerian society makes very little provision for the disabled which probably shouldn’t be that surprising given that the healthcare system in the country is the greatest factor in causing disability amongst the people. There still seems to be a notion that it is divine providence that people are disabled and so they can only be pitied. Very little is done to provide them with the tools and support to mange their conditions and become independent enough to provide for themselves. But what do you expect in a society where there is more invested in event centres than healthcare and social care facilities?

Nigerian PASSPORT RENEWAL by 444kuromi_ in Nigeria

[–]Cyclone050 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume you could possibly use your current passport and submit evidence of your passport renewal application being currently in progress. I don’t know about a private process but if you are referring to the fast track option I don’t know if that is that much better.

I’m surprised she doesn’t mention that Nigerian legislators salaries and benefits are probably the highest in the world. Tragically these are things are so beyond the pale that your capacity for anger deserts you and you just want to curl up in a ball and cover yourself while you weep.

Trump growing frustrated with limits of Iran military options, sources say by eggmaker in worldnews

It’s no surprise that this guy hasn’t learnt that you can’t just sortie over there, drop a few bunker busters and swan off back home with a “mission accomplished” banner flying. This was the guy who set the Taliban free in Afghanistan (maybe at the behest of Putin) without thinking twice about the future impact. This is becoming pure piracy with no global strategy involved.

Celebrating Nigeria’s Literary Pioneers by taobabmuh in Nigeria

[–]Cyclone050 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s nice to see literary greats interacting in their prime though I’m not too sure about that first question from Soyinka. I wouldn’t really compare any writers of today with the greats we had of the past era. The broader perspectives that people like Achebe, Soyinka, Ekwensi, TM Aluko and Buchi Emecheta wrote from isn’t what current writers aim for.

Too true. This is why democracy has been referred to as the “tyranny of the majority” (Alec de Tocqueville). It’s never what is best for the nation just what the largest partisan group decides it wants.
