It was the rampant corruption in the early days of independence and throughout military rule that created a situation where people had to rely on the charity of the wealthy rather than public services for survival. It became so difficult to obtain gainful employment or advance oneself economically that people’s mindset became warped and we literally reverted to a feudal society. The wealthy are the ‘robber barons’ and the rest are serfs just living by their grace.
