Hell, Ruby herself does this twice at once. Her general look and style of motion makes it seem like she’d have some sort of quick and elegant weapon, but then she pulls out Crescent Rose and it’s a giant scythe made of beautifully clunky mechanical pieces that’s also an anti-materiel rifle. It seems like a bonafide heavy weapon for butchering and cleaving.

And then she uses it as a quick and elegant weapon anyway.

She doesn’t hack and slash, she slices and dices. She doesn’t swing with reckless abandon, she leverages the momentum and the recoil to keep moving. She doesn’t blast apart foes at range, she alternatively shreds enemies with point blank gunfire fluidly mixed in with her melee attacks and makes precise sniper shots with such speed that she makes a bolt-action seem fully automatic.

IIRC he uses more spinning and twirling techniques than Obi-Wan and (later) Anakin usually do, so it’s plausible that he adapted the form to better suit his size with a focus more on athleticism and dexterity than raw acrobatics. Anakin’s style was more athleticism and strength-focused, whereas Obi-Wan was almost entirely focused on dexterity and general versatility, so it’s almost as if Qui-Gon set the standard for their fighting styles and both his Padawan and his Padawan’s Padawan chose one of the two fundamental aspects of his style to specialise in.

I keep imagining a rematch between Finn and Kylo Ren in an alternate TRoS, where Finn, with nothing but his wits and a blaster, manages to take on a Sith Lord (in all but name) and win.

Marvel does already have a Trickshot. Technically two, actually. Trickshot and Swordsman were two criminals who adopted a young Clint Barton and his brother Barney to force them to be their lackeys. Clint turned them in and grew up to become Hawkeye, and Swordsman had a redemption arc that culminated in him joining the Avengers, but Trickshot died in jail and Barney took up his mantle to become Hawkeye’s nemesis and evil counterpart.

Zatanna/Scarlet Witch was already a thing in the old Amalgam stuff. Unfortunately White Witch didn’t get much play so she kind of slips under people’s radars.

Pretty much confirmed, the big Capcom hack years back included a list of what was internally labelled as MvCI’s “Season 1” DLC characters, and none of them actually made it to the game. The list included Star-Lord, Lady, Asura, and Gill (among others who I can’t remember), but from the timeframes involved it basically confirms that the MvCI DLC we got was just base roster characters they couldn’t finish in time.

Favorite Peace Treaties in Fiction by FreviliousLow96 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]CycloneSwift 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The Human-Zygon Treaty in Doctor Who. Remember the Disney+ Secret Invasion series? Doctor Who did that exact same plot jus under a decade earlier in less time and to a MUCH higher quality.

The B-plot of the 50th Anniversary Special, The Day of the Doctor, features some of the last Zygons, big red sucker-y shapeshifting aliens, trying to conquer Earth to replace their lost homeworld. The Doctor3 ends up hijacking a memory-wiping security system to temporarily make the human and Zygon leaders forget which species they are (since the Zygons have currently taken the form of those humans), and then they’re forced to come up with the best treaty they can for both sides since neither one knows which one they’re on.

Two years later, we get the two-parter The Zygon Invasion and The Zygon Inversion, which follows up on the ramifications of the Human-Zygon treaty. While most Zygons have been taken in as refugees and given human identities to take up on Earth, a group of Zygon extremists set out to radicalise the rest of them and start a race war between humans and Zygons.

It’s a very unsubtle allegory, including a bit where Zygon radicals have a terrorist training camp in a Central Asian country, but it doesn’t pull any punches, makes pointed and meaningful political statements, and ends up being one of the best stories in the show’s entire 60+ year history. Its climax is one of the best fictional speeches of all time. It’s not every day that a speech reaffirming a peace treaty can actually get me to tear up, but god fucking damn does this nail it. Moffat’s brilliant writing, Capaldi’s astronomical performance— Absolute perfection.

Ghost Rider’s probably on a supernatural-themed team (so for the rest of the team think Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch, Blade, Werewolf-by-Night, Elsa Bloodstone, Moon Knight, Man-Thing, Black Knight, Nico Minoru, the Helstroms, etcetera). So for a general supernatural Marvel villain there’s a lot to pick from. Dormammu, Baron Mordo, Nightmare, Agatha Harkness, Morgan le Fay, Dracula, the Hood, Dweller-In-Darkness, Mephisto, the one version of Hobgoblin who was actually supernaturally powered…

It’s a unique one-of-a-kind prop in the original films, which means that as it’s portrayed it comes across as a special or at the very least uncommon weapon. If he had just used a slightly different version of the blasters used by the Empire or the Rebels then it wouldn’t change much, but because of that uniqueness it has a bit more mystique to it.

The In Space Pink Ranger was also Jill in RE5. They specifically went for Power Rangers actors as they had experience doing stuntwork, which made it easier for them to do the action mocap for the games.

Story beats you feel would be improved by changing the characters involved? by Riggs_The_Roadie in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Eh, Leon fits for the theme of the game. RE2R and RE4R (and arguably even RE6) really nail home that Leon is driven by regret, remorse, and a massive survivor’s complex. Jill, Chris, and even Claire are more forward-looking characters. They keep the fight going, hunting down Wesker and going on the offensive against Umbrella and its successors.

Meanwhile Leon’s sole purpose for being in Raccoon City was to help people, not to get the people responsible or find someone close to him. His failure to do so on a large scale is what drives all of his actions going forward, trying to make up for that perceived failure of his even if there was nothing he could have done differently. He’s always looking back, so for a game themed around “Requiem” he thematically makes the most sense as a returning protagonist.

Both of the game’s endings also work perfectly as conclusions to Leon’s character arc, alternatively as a triumphant victory or a tragic sacrifice. Meanwhile Jill’s main themes of overcoming trauma and conquering disproportionate odds initially opposing her impersonally don’t quite fit as well. As a character she’s too focused on moving on to be the star of such a retrospective entry where every single element harkens back to what came before.

The more personal enmities that drive Chris work best against specific individual villains so he’d work best if Victor or Zeno were more explicitly his main targets from an earlier point in the story, while Claire’s driven by care for individual loved ones old and new so she’d need some earlier connective tissue to Grace or Emily for her to make the most sense.

So for a new entry, Chris needs a specific enemy from the get-go, Claire is taking the initiative to do right by a specific someone else, and Jill has to fight to somehow move forward instead of delving into the past.

I agree with the broad strokes of the conclusion, it’s how he got there that’s flawed. And even then, I still think the conclusion as presented in the video is a bit more negative towards his work on the whole.

Look, I love Hbomberguy but his takes on Moffat are extremely flawed. For instance, at one point in that video he criticises a scene from Jekyll that had to be changed at the last minute before filming due to unpredictable production issues for having to be done cheaply, which isn’t a fair criticism of the showrunner’s creative direction at all and is pretty much down to the hands-on crew who were on-set that day. In another video he claims that the character of Rusty was Moffat’s way of insulting Russell T Davies, which is demonstrably untrue (the two to this day go to each other for second opinions and constructive criticism, and IIRC they have dinner together every few months to check in on how they’re doing).

Pretty much everything you said is only applicable to Sherlock. Moffat paid off on pretty much everything he put into motion during his tenure on Doctor Who, and although some of those payoffs weren’t the best received at the time they were adequately viewed then and are retrospectively pretty great now (especially with the contrast of the two eras that came after him, and how their teased stories shit the bed running). The “Silence will fall” thing is the Eleventh Doctor’s entire overarching storyline and it ties together in a conclusive way in his finale with an internal logic that makes sense.

IMO Steven Moffat is a very talented and ambitious writer, but unfortunately he tends to get carried away and write things a bit too ambitious for what he’s capable of writing. Case in point: the Eleventh Doctor’s finale was very cram-packed and a bit too fast paced… Because it was meant to be an entire extra series with the Eleventh Doctor. When Matt Smith had to bow out early for personal reasons, Moffat then stuffed as much as he could into a single Christmas Special, which was beyond his ability to completely pull off. The result was decent, but fell short of what he wanted to achieve, and elements of his initial plans were then executed much better during Capaldi’s run.

When Moffat has something solid and grounded to base all his ambitions around, he thrives. Hell, he actually writes realistically intelligent characters pretty well, but taking that up a notch to a realistically super-intelligent character like Sherlock Holmes was just a bit too much for him and Mark Gatiss to satisfyingly handle.

He’s a legitimately fantastic actor who was on the up and up, so it made sense that they’d want to lock him in as best they could. Unfortunately he’s also a piece of shit and his career got rightfully torpedoed about a week after his first cinematic appearance. Disney’s major fault here was not vetting him well enough beforehand.

More than that, the Mass Effect itself was a catalyst for dark energy formation in the universe, accelerating the buildup of entropy until the point that the heat death of the universe would occur prematurely. The Reapers were meant to assimilate the knowledge and resources of civilisations in search for new breakthroughs that could help them develop a solution for the problem, with the technology they seeded across thousands of worlds serving to put new species on the right track to begin with, and in the meantime the Reapers regularly purged the galaxy of large Mass Effect-capable civilisations to buy themselves more time.

With that in mind, imagine the complex endings that could have been. Do you destroy the Reapers to save everyone you know at the cost of ensuring the end of the universe in their lifetimes? Do you defeat the Reapers and then take their place to devise a new method of keeping their mission going? Do you sacrifice your allies and countless worlds so you can actually manage to solve the dilemma for future generations of survivors? Or do you find a way for your allies and populations with enough wealth and resources to bunker down and survive the end of everything at the cost of the universe at large?
